Tire alternatives?

Hello!

I'm new to the list, just bought a 97 EVC in excellent condition
with 21k miles. It's great. BTW, I have a 77 Westfalia in the
garage.

I am looking for tires; have read previous posts and am convinced
that the Michelin Agilis is the best choice. The problem is that
I can't find them. TireRack says they are out with no commitment
from Michelin yet for more. Same at Discount Tire. Local dealers
are lost. I did track them down from the VW dealer for 145.00 ea.!!

1) Where can I get the Agilis now?
2) What are the alternatives.

205/R15C 100T seems to be a hard size to find.

-Thanks for any advice.

yes, I had the same thing happened to me. I was backing out of the driveway and got stuck half in the driveway and half on the road. One brake shoe lining had come away from the metal shoe. These brakes were only on less than a year and had lots of lining left. I can't remember whether these shoes were VW or after market.

Re; Piston slap

Here in Canada we had the same problem, but only with the 1992 model
year. My 92 does it, somehow it slipped past the warranty. Here in
Canada, VW replaced these engines for any customer that complained
during the warranty period. I guess that at that time VW Canada was
separate from VW America so maybe that is why so many US owners
complain about it. Apparently VW claims that the slap won't affect the
longevity of the engine, but I am not so sure. Mine has 168,000Kms and
is still fairly tight, compression at 145psi. This problem is due to
improperly cured blocks so I am told. A local auto wrecker(Tom Cat Auto
Parts, on the web) rebuilds them. A good place to get Eurovan parts for
US residents due to the current exchange rate.

Re: EV piston problems

Look for the engine code; AAF = 8.5 CR, ACU = 10.0 CR

You'll find the sticker in the paperwork or on the driverside kickpanel
about level with the dash. You'll have to get on your back to see this
one. Its on a white piece of paper about 3" x 4".

Just an update on my 99 EVC, here in Germany.

I've been bringing the van into the local dealer because of a problem in
the
automatic transmission -shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. The problem occurs
only when the engine is completely warm and usually when I'm accelerating
on
an uphill grade. When shifting from 3rd to 4th, the tachometer will jump
way up and then -clunk- the van shifts into 4th.

Today, the dealer had a VW representative come down from the factory (in
Wolfsburg?). In the end, he authorized the dealer to put in a new
transmission. Anybody else have this problem?

Otherwise all is well in Germany. The van cruises well on the autobahn.
Easily cruises at 95mph but I try to stay below 85 to keep wear and tear on
the engine down.

The (well, *one* of the) question is, where did the butane come from? BTW, I still maintain my tank was filled with nitrogen, since it didn't burn at 70 degrees ambient. ;-)
Does Winnebago fill the tank with butane? Surely it's not VW in Germany! And if Winnebago does it, why? It freezes at the factory, right?

I had the same problem about 30k miles ago (now at 118k.) VW Dealer first
said they must replace the dual-nylon tubing. This part alone was
$300-$400 (really crazy) and 4 days wait. I asked if he could suggest an
alternative, since the wait would kill me. He said they could trim back
the end of the nylon tubing (which was cracked) and fit new, longer hoses
over the remaining tubing. He was very careful to say that he could not
guarantee its longevity. Still working great now.

I got my EV up on my truck jack stands last night and removed the bottom
pan.
The nice steady drip of coolant is coming from one of two metal to nylon
pipe
connections that appear to be coolant hoses for the rear heater. The rear
heater is gas-fired so I was surprised by the two hoses. The connection
point
is leaking and the hoses are in such a place that you need a lift so you
can
stand under the van and reach up to work on it.

Since it appeared to be beyond my garage equipment and ability, I took it
back to my trusty independent VW guy this morning for repair. Not expecting
a
major bill although it may require remove/replacement of starter of other
equipment for them to get to it to repair it. [<snip>

Re: Heater Core Leak

Lynn,

I hate to add to the bad news, but there is quite a bit to replacing
the metal "coolant lines" that run back to the rear heater as Jack said
earlier. The 2 big items are:
1. Remove fuel tank
2. Remove front torsion bar

The lines themselves are held in by only 3 hex nuts/screws!

I'm sure you have this heater. I check with VW a while back to see if
I could change over to the gas heater (there a 2 of them; model B2L =
Gas heater, model D2L = Diesel heater). I was told that the US EV's
did not have this as an option, Canadian EV's did. All three rear
heaters use the same vents, so if you have the factory coolant lines,
it would be unlikely that you have the gas heater, sorry.

We'll all hope they can fix the rubber hose connection to the metal
coolant pipe.

another

It's about a $600 dollar job that includes removing the gas tank.

The other guy was able to get VW to cover the repair. In my case I
was not
able to pursue the issue with VW as the dealer did not return the
parts to

refilled
the almost empty reservoir. I assume the red light is a low water

Also asked that they turn on heater and run it for a while to

with.

Will let you know the outcome. Thanks for the heater core responses.

I created a back enclosure for the lift gate when it is up, last

It cost me about $6 bucks. Thought some of you Frugal Volks would be
interested. I have a 93 MV WK

I bought (3) 5x7 typical blue tarps at a $1 each. With the lift gate
up I placed a S hook in each of the drainage holes on the bottom
corners (now top). I then tripped the lock shut with my finger and
added another S hook through the lock.
Hang one tarp through it's 5' side grommet holes on the S hooks (mine
matched perfectly in length and spacing. I then hang the other two
tarps on each side using the same corner S hooks and pulling them on
the outside of the hatch struts and folding the top corner over the
strut. This is then held in place with a Jumbo office Binder clip
(ACCO 2"with 1" capacity) placed over the tarp and strut. Presto New
addition!

The 5x7 tarps are all the perfect size for this and just cover the
area
needed.
They drag on the ground (7'length)just enough to hold a large rock for
ballast. It sets up and comes down in a couple minutes. I think this
would be a great spot for the porta potty or changing room while in
the
camp site. With the curtians over head you even have a choice of using
the skylight!

I tied the tarps together through the grommets on the outside corners
but will add some velcro or sew them together to stay shut when using
the facilities.
I found entering works good off the bumper where the tarp overlaps the
van.

With the addition of a 4th tarp on the inside covering the rear, it
could be used as a solar shower area. Have one of the black bags but
never used it yet. I think I will also make a thin platform grate that
will fit the bottom of the storage area ( between the Storage bins &
up
to the front of the rear seat) that could be pulled out and placed on
the ground for a clean dry floor in the new room.

Thanks for all of the great chat. I finally made it through all of
the
messages starting from 1! Hope I can be of as much help as some of you
are.

IT will take a long time to use up the butane in your tank by running the
appliances.

Remember, butane will not burn below 32 degree F. So if you go camping and
it is below freezing, you will not have heat.

The best way to purge the tank is to hook it up to a huge propane space
heater and run it for about 3 hours. Then fill it up with Propane.

EV Auto Tranny Service

I had mine changed, fluid and filter at around 30K, and will again at
the 60K service. I believe the manual (at least the one the dealers
use) recommends it first time at 60K.

Way back I had some slippage problems traced to "code 00641-006", but
chose not/not to crack the case and trace it further since it went away
after the service.

It has been fine since. God, I wish I hadn't have said that...

P.S. ...and yes, mine "clunks" at light throttle between 2nd and 3rd,
and kind of "lurches" into 4th, but I have grown to accept these as
peccadilloes of the tranny setup I have with my GL. In all, it has
been the lowest cost per mile vehicle to maintain I have ever owned.
Shoot, there I go again.

Just curious if EV owners had any info or insight as to if the twin or
