I'd say that long-term if its found that VWs are consistently frying their occupants, we may
*eventually* see a recall on this. Save your receipts for the work just in case a recall ever
pops up. I would call something like this recall-worthy since it can possibly involve injuring an
occupant in normal intended use. Until a recall is done, you'll have to campaign yourself with
VWoA and you may not have luck but give it a shot if you're up for it.

To report something that you think is a potential safety issue, go to
. Just note that the process can take ages so you'll
probably end up fixing it now out of your own pocket (or VWoA's if they agree to help now) but
don't count on a recall, if any, for some time. Save your receipt though in case a recall does
happen and maybe you can get reimbursed.

Re: looking for a REAR bench seat

Joel I have a nice one that is from an MV so it does fold into a bed. I would like $200 for it and that would include the rear cushion. I am located in Southern New Jersey about an hour from Philly.

Re: Belly pan bolts

Thanks everyone.. I'm going back under this weekend. I'm pretty sure
the bolts got "lost" the last time I went to Jiffy Lube. I had used
them before when I had a different vehicle and had no trouble. When I
asked if they recall the bolts, I was told.. "There were no bolts
holding it on, we had to put some there to keep it from falling off."
Well, they actually closed up shop a couple of days ago. Now I found
a trustworthy repair shop.

Thanks again,

Be sure when you replace them they are not stripped out, causing them
to fall out. On my 95, two of them were stripped out (probably by some
agressive oil changer's air ratchet).

I replaced the four large bolts with new threaded inserts (blind nuts)
and new bolts. The new blind nuts have about 1/4" inch of threads as
opposed to the original bolts which threaded into a fairly thin steel
frame, with just a couple of threads.

I also cut off the rear third of the belly pan so the two 10mm nuts
over studs are no longer used. I still get the wind fairing and sound
deadening, but the pan is lighter and easier to install.

I timed at about 750 rpm at the btdc mark. The mark on the flywheel was skipping around

Aren't you referring to the rear "anti-sway" bars.
I suppose, in reality, they are a form of torsion bar.

Rear Torsion Bar Loose

Hello,

It's probably time to bring this thread back up again.

I just bought my 2002 EVC recently and installed new Bilstien shocks
on all four corners. (Beautiful ride, by the way!) (I'll post a more
thorough message on this later)

Of course, I remembered that folks were losing rear torsion bars all
the time, so I checked the security of mine. Good thing too! ALL
fasteners were loose and two bolts were nearly ready to fall out.
And, this EVC was maintained *religiously* by a VW Stealership.
(Boneheads!)

I pulled all fasteners, cleaned them up, applied "Lock Tite" and
cranked down again. That's a solid fix now.

Let this be another "wake up call" for those with rear torsion bars.
(2001-2003, I believe) Anyone can do this. Just slide under your
EV/EVC and check it out for yourself!

Best wishes to ALL,

Garrett

Re: Galley cover lifters

Removing the galley cover seems like a good idea, less weight, more
ventilation and visibility. However stepping on top of the galley
cover was a good way to get into the upstairs bed. I'm not sure the
range would take a person's weight (or it might get dented) without
the cover.

cutting board to cover the sink, which adds counter space and hides
dirty dishes!

Re: What would be a good shop manual ?

AFAIK, Bentley is the the only real option. I have both the book
version (only covers 1992-1999) and the CD version (covers through
2003). I prefer the book because I keep it on the shelf in the garage
and can refer to what I need quickly. The CD requires cleaning hands,
booting up laptop, etc. Though it does have search capability and
better troubleshooting (IMHO).

I keep my VW campers a long time so I chose this camper carefully ...
Things changed unexpectedly just recently, when I stumbled on a
rare find - a "time capsule" '87 Vanagon camper with 40k original
miles. Knowing that I may never find an old Vanagon Westy in that
condition again, I bit the bullet and bought it. So now I need
to sell the '95 EVC that was intended to be my long-term camper,
having put only a few hundred miles on it since I bought it.

Was that your tree-crushed Vanagon thread on the Samba site a

Yes, that was the one. In fact I plan to pull the remaining bits off of it
this week and send it to the crusher by month's end. (It will be hard to
see it go. Many fond memories in that camper; my 10 year old daughter
spent every summer of her life camping in it, starting at 1 month old.) For

Re: 2002 eurovan weekender burned up heated seat

justthesells

I had a similar thing happen on my 'oo EVMV last year. I kept
smelling something burning while I was driving and then my back got
REALLY hot in one spot. Fortunately, it didn't burn a hole in my
jacket, but I now have a quarter sized brown mark on my seat.
I didn't contact VOA, but I did fix it myself. I took the seatcover
off and with some patience and a tube of high temp silicone, I re-
glued the heating element back onto the foam in it's correct shape.
What happened to make it burn a hole in mine is what I assume
happened to your seat too: the heating element came unglued and kind
of bunched up in one spot. You can guess what happened at that
spot...
That was the winter of '06-'07, and this winter I have had NO
problems and had those seat heaters up to 5.
Good luck.
