I am not sure if the extra folding seat was available here in CanadaThanks Dirk for the information. I will call them tomorrow and see if it is available in Canada. I simply assumed it must be available in Canada since it is in the owner's manual. (A Syncro would be nice unless you need parts.) Thanks again Eckhard |

I just checked the EV specs on VW's web site. Nothing is mentioned about galvanized construction for the EV. However, the specs for the Passat mention this feature twice. If the EV does have a galvanized body, wouldn't VW say so in the specs? It would be great to know for certain what they're using since this feature will be a major consideration in our next vehicle purchase. Greg The bodies on the 98 and on T4s are galvenized. Re: Seats
I am not sure if the extra folding seat was available here in Canada
but it is described in my 1992 EVGL Owners Manual. I have seen two stretch EV passenger vans in Vancouver but never looked inside to see the seating. At the moment the local VW dealer, SPEEDWAY VW, has a 1995 Syncro EVGL 8 Pass. with the seat you are describing. This van was imported from Germany, they are asking 25,000CDN for it. Looks the same from outside but underneath it is very different with the driveshaft and all. A good place to find out if these seats are available in Canada is Cowell VW in Richmond, BC. Phone number is 604 273 3922, ask for Linn in parts, he is very knowledgable about VW's and is good at getting hard to find parts. Dirk 92EVGL |
No External Temp. Thermistor
Chris:
I looked at the black plug on the front bumper - there is nothing behind it and no evidence that there ever was. So it would seem that my '92 Eurovan CV has the overhead console with the capabilitly, but no external temparture themistor to complete the function. Unless it's somewhere else? Seats

Apparently seat config isI really (I mean really) would like to have the 8th seat for my 93 EVGL. After 2 dealers told me that there is no such thing, although I had seen them in Germany, I tried to get it on my last trip to the VW Vaterland. The dealer there in Ingolstadt actually had one for DM 1000.00 + installation. (I guess about $700.00). Since I did not want to ship it I contacted VW of America. There I was told that the DOT will not allow them to import accessories for their vans (this seat qualifies as an accessory) and that I would have to do it privately. So I guess the swiveling center seats will not be available through VW here. Here is my question. Are they maybe available in Canada? And, more importantly, does anyone know of a junked EV in Canada that has the 8th seat? Thanks Eckhard |
Re: hard starts, under-hood temp
Jerry:
Thanks for this bit of advice. I will be setting up an appointment for later in the week, and this will be number one on my list. #2 will be the new tires, as those are less important than a re-seal. I will certainly be a good list citizen an keep it posted as to the success of the exercise. That might explain the hard starting (coolant leaks into cylinder(s) making it hard to start) AND the loss of coolant. |

Re: '99 MV wanted + advice?
Brandon,
I expect to visit Germany either in Dec or Jan so will put on my wish list a visit to the VW dealer to investigate the latest seating configurations. I usually go to the place at 7am in the morning and spend an hour browsing with coffee in hand. No one seems to bother me. Hope to have the digital camera along. Ron |
Re: EuroVan Magazine Watch
Brandon,
Yes I suppose VW could take some of the styling cues from the old bus but I am afraid they will also go with a new platform that loses the space efficiency that I think makes the current EV so unique. I doubt if VW would continue to bring in the T4 (or future T5) platform to the USA if there was a competing New Microbus in the lineup. My choice would be the T5, however, VW would probably sell alot more New Microbuses based on the trends in the USA marketplace. Ron |
Re: Who has towed what?.................
Sonds like fun with the new wheels.
As for the towing, the max EV towable numbers are: - 4400 lbs with trailer brakes - 1500 lbs without trailer brakes - 400 lbs tongue weight I instaled a Dalan class III hitch, took about 2.5 hours. I mail ordered it (model # DA 757218) from this location for $194.43 (includes shipping in US). This hitch is rated for: - 4400 lbs Gross Weight - 400 lb Hitch wt As for actually pulling this heavy of a load, here's my two cents: 1. Tune up the engine, its tought to find more HP - aftermarket mods are almost nil, so get the most stock HP. 2. Flush and replace your coolant and check out your cooling system - make sure everything works. 3. Change the filter and AT fluid - your transmission will be working hard. 4. Flush the entire braking system, use only DOT 4 fluid. In fact, get the fluid that has the highest wet boiling point - you'll need the best brakes you can get. Consider going to semi-metallic pads (resurface the disks)and swaping out the rubber hoses in the brake system for braided ones. Don't overlook the rear brakes, make sure they are working 100% as well. 5. Replace/upgrade the shocks - the suspension has to work harder. 6. Look into upgrading the rear springs. You really loose ground clearance VW actually has several different factory springs, maybe the camper springs or the Rialta set for the rear might work for your application. Don't forget to get a 4 wheel alignment and have the tires balanced (make sure the tires are at their max air pressure rating). 7. Check the headlight beams with the load on - don't blind any oncoming traffic. 8. Be prepared to drive slow ( and apply the brakes lightly everytime you go through water puddles so the trailer brakes are 100%capable) because the EV won't go fast - make up for this on the track! 9. Depending on how many axles you have on the trailer, check them all everytime you stop to make sure the bearings are not overheating (if this wasn't a new trailer, I'd repack the bearing) These tips ought to keep you busy for a while - and lighten your wallet a bit! Re: '99 MV wanted + advice?
Well, I was intrigued by the euro website. I actually had the dealer
research the possiblity of the swiveling center seats, as well as the lime green paint and cool upolstery. No go. Apparently seat config is part of the US certification process, so no flexibility. I'd love to know, if you have a trip coming up, whether those seats could be retrofitted. We went ahead and bought a silver '00 mv, which we'll pick up next Sat. Brandon |
Re: EuroVan Magazine Watch
Sigh.... we continue to be misunderstood by the magazines. No onecan recognize that the EuroVan is so different and unique it IS the newminivan design. Maybe a red and white paint scheme would help.Oh, I don't know, The original microbus was such a fabulous design, with such wonderful, classic visual cues, I'll bet VW would duplicate the success of the NB with a new Microbus. What they could do is offer it alongside the EV, just like they do the Sharan in european markets. Brandon |

up some steep mountain passes in Washington, and Idaho. Are you going to tow in a hilly area? If so you'll be in the truck lane most of the time. Make sure the trailer has brakes, if they are electric make sure that they are adjusted properly. And what ever you do don't speed! I've seen two nasty wrecks where people were towing, at excessive speeds, changed lanes and jackknifed. BTW our trailer has no brakes and the EV brakes, over heat pretty easily, when going down mountain passes or coming to "rapid" stops. The brake fade isn't bad, but sometimes they sound quite horrible when coming to a stop. This has happened several times, without warping the rotors. -----Original Message-----
