Re: Standard Transmission Problem

On high mileage transmissions, the second gear syncro is usually the first

to show signs of wear. This is because the second gear syncro is use most often. The reason it occurs at cold temperatures, is because the oil viscosity is high. This provides more resistance to the syncros ability to "spin" up the main shaft of the transmission. The oil actually warms up in about ten miles or so, due to friction and heat transfer form the engine. There is nothing cheap that can be done to repair this. Although synthetic gear box oil might help. If however it the same problem starts to appear on all gears, and gets progressively worse, than it is a sign of a hydraulic leak, in the clutch system. You will notice that the in brake fluid reservoir starts to drop. The way it is designed will cause the clutch to stop working completely before it starts to affect the brakes. Hope that helps! -----Original Message-----

Subject: [ev_update] Standard Transmission Problem I hope some one can offer sugestions what could be wrong with my transmission. On cold mornings, usually below freezing, the transmission will not shift into second gear when moving. If I roll to a complete stop it will go into second no problem. After driving a few minutes the transmission will shift normally. The shifting linkage has been adjusted twice with no improvement. Any Ideas? The other concern I do have is what would happen ifWell, I imagine it would a lot less dramatic than if a tire blew on the van itself, and we drive with one tire at each corner every day. Like anything else, a moderate of attention/maintenance will go a long way towards preventing a problem, like keeping tires that are in good shape on the trailer and are properly inflated. -- Bill Salopek ICQ: 20536257 No worries... |

Eurovaneers:
I was just denied my usual helping of automatically-updated list postings, and got instead a message saying that I had to 'be a member' to use this feature. Huh? I guess that there's not actually a list member tending to a piece of hardware for this list (as is the case with vanagon.com), but does anybody have an idea what I do to re-attach myself to my lifeline? Okay, I'm taking it a little too seriously. I will try to re-subscribe, even though the message window I got back from e-groups had my personal 'tag' at the top, and therefore thinks, on some level, that I'm still subscribed. I wish everything with computers could be blamed on 'garbage in, garbage out'... Sincerely, Marcus Elia dela@...
