When my gauges started going bad about 4 years ago, VW told me the circuit
board would cost me around $400 and the labor would be added to that.
Since mine still haven't been fixed, I'm wondering, based on what you've
written here, whether VW does offer a free replacement board if I pay the
labor. Can anyone else comment on this?

Michael,
Regarding your intermittent gauges:
The printed circuit board for the gauges needs to be replaced with an
upgraded version.
Ask your dealer about it. I believe the part is free but not the labor.
Two months ago I purchased a 93 EV Weekender from my local dealer. They
replaced the circuit board as part of the used vehicle prep.
