Re: Awning installation - Shady Boy?

Randal Reed

I've thought about purchasing the shady boy, but have been afraid to
commit until I saw one in person (although this isn't seeming
likely). Could you give me your thoughts on your awning? What are
the good points? What are the bad? How does it perform in the wind
and/or heavy rain? Have you had a chance to compare it directly with
a standard awning? Would you recommend it to your mother?

Thanks,

I installed a Shady Boy awning on my 99 EVC. I used
the sheet metal screws that came with the awning. I
first mounted the awning using as much 3M double stick
mounting tape as I could get on the back of the
mounting brackets. I tapped the centers of the holes
and drilled pilot holes. I then unstuck the 3M
mounting and drilled the screw holes. I didn't find
anything except space. My awning is mounted directly
over the sliding door (the Shady Boy has a very
compact footprint and folds out for a larger coverage
area).

I used as much marine grade silicone gel as I could
get into the holes before putting in the sheet metal
screws.

It would be much easier if you have a helper to hold
things in place.

Has anyone done an awning install on a 99 EVC?

I'm doing one tomorrow.

What kind of bolts did you use to anchor the
mounting brackets?

Did you get access on the inside of the Van to put a
washer and nut on
or did you use some type of expanding fastener from
the outside?

What did you find when you drilled and where?

Anything would be a help, Thanks
