Re: Danger: Transmission fails to downshift

I can't comment on the upshift problem, but on the
braking problem, are you accidently stepping on the
brake AND ACCELERATOR at the same time?

This happened to me on the second day driving my new
'01 EVMV. I was coming to a stop lite and I thought
I stepped only on the brake. I did stop, but I also
had my foot partially on the accelerator. At first I
couldn't figure out why the engine was racing and
luckily the lite turned green and once I removed my
foot off the brake it was fine. I never had this
problem on my '84 Westfalia, but looking at the brake
and accelerator positions, on both vans, I can see how
this can happen. The pedals on the EV are very close
in position and height. The '84 Westy required that
I pick up my foot off the accelerator and step on the
brake, whereas on the EV, I can just slide the foot
over. My foot is still trained for the '84 Westy!

I have a '99 EVC, so I'm assuming your
transmission is the same as
mine. The high revs before upshift sounds like a
specific problem,
but not being able to stop because the tranny
doesn't downshift is
harder to comprehend. When I take my foot off the
accelerator and
press on the brake, I'm not even aware of any
downshift action
slowing the vehicle. Your situation sounds more
like a stuck
throttle. Throwing a moving vehicle into "Park" is
unnecessary and
disastrous for the transmission. If you want to use
the transmission
to aid in stopping, why not move the shift lever
from drive to 3 and
then 2, I do this all the time, especially on hills.
Sounds like the
other responders on this board have some good ideas.
Taking an
intermittant problem to a dealer hardly ever yields
satisfaction.

Good Luck, Reed

I have a 1999 Eurovan weekender and we have had
problems since day
one with the transmission. There are two
problems. First the
engine
peroidically revs up to almost 5000 rpm before
shifting into third
gear. Second and most importantly, the
transmission has failed to
downshift on two occassions. When the automatic
transmission has
failed to downshift, applying the foot brake does
not stop the car.

My wife had to throw the moving car into park into
order to stop and
avoid hitting another car. We have had two
different VW dealerships
try on six occassions to fix the problems, but
with no sucess. When
they can reproduce the problem, their fix is only
temporary.
Currently, the VW dealership can not duplicate the
problem and
nothing shows up on their computer codes. VW has
taken the position
that if there are no error codes, then the car is
functioning as
designed and is safe. Well that is a bunch of BS
and I am not
putting my family in car.

Any suggestions on solutions or similar
experiences?
