A couple months back when I replaced the belts on my 1995 EVC, I used a prybar to release the tension on the top pulley to remove the serpentine belt. This is write up on TheSamba.com I posted on that work:
Included are links to YouTube videos of a prybar being used to remove the serpentine belt and some pictures as well. Had a tougher time installing the new serpentine belt than removing it.
