does it do this more often when the fuels tank is less than 1/2 full? ?A tired fuel pump can be the culprit if this is true. ? When the tank is full, the gasoline around the pump cools it down. ?When near empty, the pump heats up and the pressure at its output drops, resulting in the symptoms you observed.

Have you considered checking your fuel filter? you are right is sounds like
fuel starvation.
