I had an acquaintance whose gas pot-bellied stove (used to heat an enclosed
porch) would not stay lighted. Before he paid big bucks to have a specialist
come to his home to solve the problem, I suggested he vacuum thoroughly the
pilot/thermocouple area. Eureka! Afterwards, the stove lighted quickly and
stayed lit. Replacing the thermocouple would have provided the same results.

I know about the cost aspect--we live in a cabin that is off the grid and
use a propane refer at home. years ago I had a friend who owned a junk yard
and would get the occasional RV in. I had a unit from him and the cost of
the thermocoupler was four times the cost of a universal--and of course it
had "special threads".
