Milling head Maximat V10 first inspection: grease and oil
6
Hello everybody, I am new to the group. I just got Maximat V10 milling column attached to a very heavy metal base connected to Sweden made xy table. So no lathe. I have a no much experience in metal working, but nevertheless I like to start good and new. Recently I started to inspection the mashine, I opened the gear case and I found 2 things: 1 - the small squared brass piece (used for transporting the gears up and down) was laying inside at the bottom of the case (see pic). 2 - part of the grease inside seemed to be old (see pics) 1 > At that point I put back the brass on the arm and everything worked just fine. Actually I was able to change the gear position even without the brass, even thou I think it wasn¡¯t the best. Does anybody know why this actually happened? I can¡¯t really understand how this little piece of brass could came out from its arm, because the position it has ¡°locks¡± it against its spot on the gears post. One thing to say: the milling column has been transported and stored horizontally inside a wooden box. Might it fell down during this time? 2 > Regarding the grease, I was now thinking to remove as much as possible from the 2 lateral windows without disassembling everything, and filling in a new one. Now, I already read many threads regarding which grease to use. I wanted to stick to the NLGI 1 lithium-based one advice on the manual, but I actually can¡¯t find fine one like this that is synthetic. The only SYNTHETIC and LITHIUM based I found is a NLGI 2. The NLGI 1 I found comes always as MINERAL and LITHIUM based. Can somebody recommend me a NGLI 1 synthetic and lithium-based? Or would the NLG1 mineral and lithium based work as well? Or is it crucial to actually put NGLI 1? Would the NGLI 2 work as well? 3 > Regarding oil for the vertical leadscrew and vertical column, SAE 10 motor oil, correct? Thanks in advance

Motor connection problem Emcomat 7 ¦¤/YY 220V
4
Hello. I bought an Emcomat 7 with a ¦¤/YY 220V, motor supplied by someone earlier. The previous owner tried to connect the lathe with a VFD, but the motor does not work correctly (no second speed). The Run Capacitor is missing. The motor wires are all brown and some have been painted in poorly visible colors by someone. Please help with the actual diagram of the motor connection. We have 220v single-phase network. Regards, Anton.

FB2 Mill 3 Phase Motor Help
10
Hi All, I have just bagged myself an FB2 Mill, seemingly in pretty good condition, from a workshop clearance. It has the Emco power feed on the x-axis, and both motors are 400V 3 phase. My plan is to reconfigure the motors from Star to Delta and run them on a VFD, but I have a few questions which I hope that people here can help with. 1. The motor info plate only states that it's 400v, but all 6 terminals are exposed in the junction box, using a star configuration. Is there anything that I should worry about when changing to Delta configuration? My research says that it should be fine. 2. I've done some reading and found that there are some risks of destroying old motors by using a VFD. A lot of what I've read suggests that the risk is minimised by using a short cable between the VFD and the motor, and by not changing the carrier frequency (and accepting the high pitch whine from the motor). Does anyone have any insights into using a VFD on an FB2, or old motors in general? 3. If I do end up destroying the 3 phase motors, are they simple enough to replace with a modern motor? 4. (Bonus question) Why did Emco ship these units with such a low power motor? Every mini mill now seems to have 3 or 4 times the power of this one. Is it just that motors have become cheaper since Emco made these? Hopefully that's not too much for a single post! Thanks Jay

Dro
3
May well have been covered but ¡.. what¡¯s the opinions here on adding a Dro and which one ? I have a small proxxon which I added a Dro to the carriage and simply used a good Dti behind the cross slide as a when needed , It works well especially for the milling attachment side of things ¡ Probably something better and easier to use would be good for a bigger lathe :) Ricky

Maximat 7 mill head motor issues
17
Hello gentlemen I¡¯m new here and new to vintage Emco machines too :) my background is marine engineering and I have questions about my new machine that more experienced ppl will likely know ! First issue and the main one is the mill motor spins over but has no torque, you can stop the spindle by hand even in low gear ¡¡ the motor wiring looks suspect to me v¡¯s the wiring diagram at some point the 4core cable has been replaced and the coulors do not match which is a pain ! first wire issues are two of the motor wires were joined together not per drawing, Earth ok so I would need a technique to I¡¯d the wires at the motor end and replace the cable for the correct coulor code next question : Is there a controller for the motor or just a simple switch ? next question : Is there a manual for the mill only ? I have the standard manual with some details but not what I would consider a full manual / leads onto ¡.. how to adjust the spindle bearings if at all possible? I think that covers the main points if any folk can help ! cheers R

question about email comunication
10
Hi guys i would like to ask you if you have similar problem or this problem have only me by my fault to press some buttons and stop resive emails from us groupe or is because two weeks nobody send any email??? :-DB-) thank you for answer Roman ---------- P?vodn¨ª e-mail ---------- Od: Vedran <vedran.groups@...> Komu: [email protected] Datum: 27. 11. 2022 20:55:28 P?edm¨§t: Re: [emcoV10lathe] Getting a Maximat Compact back in working order Hi John, sorry I didn't realize Compact was different from Standard. With tapered rollers there will be a preload nut (C00.3-07 in schematic). After you take it out, the spindle will likely need to be pressed out from the left hand side bearing. Resist the urge to use a hammer - of any kind :) Threaded rod passed through the spindle, acting on the on headstock housing via wooden cribbing can be used Good news is that 32 series bearings are available and cheap-ish, even in the P5 tolerance. Killing these bearings while trying to free them up in situ would not be a tragedy as on the Standard, but I'd still take it apart and clean it that way Regards Vedran On Sun, Nov 27, 2022 at 9:20 PM John T via groups.io <mealies.fissile_02@...> wrote: Hello Roman, Thank you for the pictures and links. The lathe I have is actually different from the one in the video. It is a Maximat Compact, and does not have the spindle quill. It also looks to have taper roller bearings that are sealed up behind press rings. At this point, would it make sense for me to attach the belts and let the machine run at a low speed for a while to see if things loosen up? Or would that be a bad idea¡ Thanks, John

Emco 8.6 manual anyone ?
3
I have a V10P and freestanding FB2 but have just bought (over the net ), an Emcomat 8.6 and need to arrange transport for it. Can anyone look up and tell me the weight of the basic machine ? Without a mill or stand / chucks etc ? ( It would be listed in the specs page ) so I have an idea of how to handle it. I know what a Compact 8 weighs and a Compact 10 but I am assuming it is somewhere in between ?

V10 Carriage Lock Dimensions
5
Does anyone have dimensions for the carriage lock? Mine is missing it. Looks easy enough to make, but it's in kind of an awkward spot under the saddle, makes it difficult to get a measurement. I figure it will be a bit of trial and error with the dimensions to get it to fit, so some known measurements would save some time. I'm going off of the picture Vedran posted here for what it should look like: /g/emcoV10lathe/topic/104046812#msg25565 Can't find specs in the archives, so I figured I check if anyone knows. Thanks!

FB2 maximum table weight
13
I recently bought myself a 5" Elliott dividing head, but it was only when I got it home that I realised that it's almost comically large on the FB2 mill. I haven't been able to find a maximum table weight in the manual, but at 55kg, it feels near the limit. Does anyone else have experience or insight that might be helpful? Here's a picture of the dividing head on the mill (at the centre of the unit, so as not to stress the castings) with the head raised to the maximum height. Jay

V10P Headstock Fiber Gear Replacement
57
Hi everyone, Followup from my post here on my recently acquired V10P: /g/emcoV10lathe/topic/advice_on_purchasing_this/111150572 I figured I would start a new thread here to keep the discussion relevant to the title, hopefully make future searches a bit easier. Currently, my lathe has two stripped fiber gears, the only combo I can run it at to avoid any broken teeth is at the highest speed. I reached out to the seller who was liquidating the estate of the previous owner and let her know to keep an eye out for any "small brown gears" as she was cleaning out the shop, and to my amazement she actually found a replacement for one of them, new in bag: Unfortunately, a replacement for the other gear was nowhere to be found. You can see from the pic below the extent of the damage. If I'm looking at the manual correctly, this should be part # B2A-037-000. As far as I can tell, no one has one for sale at the moment on ebay, and I guess 61 tooth gears are not standard off the shelf sizes, so I'm trying to figure out a gameplan for replacement. Here's my options: 1. 3D print a replacement. I've tried to dig through the other threads where this has been discussed, and I understand the concerns about plastic possibly shedding into the gearbox. But this may be the quickest and easiest way for me to get up and running again. I'll even be the guinea pig and let you all know if it was a bad idea 2. (Maybe, can anyone confirm this would work?) Purchase this 61T fiber gear for a Maximat 7, press it off the hub and bore out the inner dimension for my V10 https://www.ebay.com/itm/135327445755?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=O-GhutFTSr2&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=DEztzfMdTz2&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY. I have another working lathe so this is no issue, I guess my biggest hangup is depriving a Maximat 7 owner of a drop in replacement 3. Machine one myself. I don't currently have all of the necessary tools. I've got a rotary table and a mill, but I'm missing dividing plates and the actual gear cutters themselves. Not out of the question to buy the plates and maybe grind my own tools, I've wanted to get a gear making setup going for a while now. 4. Custom order one. To be honest, I would just a soon buy the equipment to make it myself at this point. This is a hobby for me and finding reasons to use my other tools is half the fun :D Anyways, I'm still doing some research on my options, but figured I'd post something here in case anyone has some thoughts on these approaches.

Change gears for Emco lathes
4
Hi group, I have a set of 12 change gears for Emco lathes. They fit several models: it think they can be used on lathes from Compact 5 to Compact 10. They came with a lathe I bought and I never used them as I have another working set. They look completely unused. They are Modulus 1 gears. They are 8mm thick and have a 14mm bore with a 4mm key. The set weighs 5kg (close to 11 pounds) The gears have 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, and 80 teeth. I will upload pics shortly. The asking price is $175 plus actual shipping to wherever you are located. Best Regards, Andrei mailto:calciu1@...
