Pushing the Envelope vs Popularization
As many of us know, there is a popular
misconception that electric boats are "experimental", highly
sophisticated and too complicated for the average boater who
just wants to have fun on the water.

Re: prices and spec's
My boat, just completed at the end of last
season, is a 23 fantail launch displacing about 1500
lbs. LWL of 20. The system consists of a 36V Advanced
A89-4001 motor rated at 6hp continuous, 2300 rpm

I have begun the long search for prices and

Whatcha got?
I am still learning about the pros and cons of
all the different electric systems available for
electric boats, and was wondering what other people
actually have in their boats and how they like what

Re: permenant magnet configuration
la_monty..there is no rectifying necessary..they
are 3 phase pulse width modulated..or a digital
signal that simulates AC only with square waves.
Effectively the controls are chopping up the potential

permenant magnet configuration
Thanks Dave, there IS a lot of info and selction
of same. I used to retail Rutland wind generators
(prior to rare earths) and liked the
magnet/rotor/brushless design. But they gave an AC output

Re: Electric/IC hybrid drives
Chris, a hybrid diesel electric system is much
more efficient than a diesel only drive system because
of many compelling reasons.1)parasytic losses in
ancilliary pumps, alternator, associated belts

Re: competition for the Ray outboard
Bill, I cannot say that the motor is built with
lesser parts. He uses brand new OMC lower units and
quality PM motors, PM controllers etc. <br>I just know

Re: competition for the Ray outboard
Can you expand on what was the problem with the motors? Was it poorly made, etc., or is there an inherent problem with the permenent magnet motor?

Re: difference between wound and permene
la_monty_au...yes we have turned the Brushless
motor inside out...the windings are the stator and the
magnets are the rotor...this means that they are neither
commutated or brushed...infact the only

Re: competition for the Ray outboard
I don't think that this motor will be competition
for the "Ray" motor anytime soon! I know of a few
people that have owned a "resevoir runner" and didnt
have it very long before getting rid of it

Re: difference between wound and permene
Dave, I understand 99% of the technical details
on these pages, but motor details are sometimes
assumed or i missed them. I am at home with alternators
and AC motors and look at a DC motor as a beast

am not as good as I would like to think at
explaining all of the nuances. You are right about the
batteries...current in a parallel circuit is additive
