Re: Finally heard from the FAA Medical
Yes get your 3rd class. You will have held a medical, then you are eligible for Basic Med. That is the way I read this. I do not see basic med as a class of flight physical as it has its own limitations. Medical certification is technically challenging in itself. Re: Finally heard from the FAA Medical
Hi Ann, You are correct that a medical certificate is needed prior to obtaining Basic Med. I have not held a medical certificate before. However, as I read the letter, it seems the letter authorizes the AME to issue the Class 3 Medical certificate 'on the spot' assuming they determine I am fit to fly.? I find this rather unexpected so I contacted the AOPA* Medical consultant I have been working with the last 2 years to get her take on this. In any case, I am operating under the assumption that this is a legitimate practice.? *Yes, I just found out yesterday that EAA also has FAA medical consultants as I read through my EAA 'Welcome Packet'. Cheers, Mike

Finally heard from the FAA Medical
I just wanted to follow up with my previous post on the FAA Medical Class 3 application I had posted several weeks back. Believe it or not, after?50 weeks?and countless calls to Oklahoma City, I FINALLY heard back from the FAA Medical on my Class 3 Medical.?Since my prior AME exam had expired 02SEP2024, it looks like they recognized the impact of their delay and gave me an opportunity to get the Third Class I finally qualified for.?Here is the actionable part of the letter: "In order to obtain a third-class airman medical certificate, it will be necessary for you to undergo a current third-class physical examination by a designated aviation medical examiner (AME). The AME is authorized by this letter to issue you a third-class airman medical certificate bearing the limitation, 'Not valid for any class after October 31, 2025', provided he finds you otherwise qualified.?This authorization expires on October 31, 2030." The letter goes on to outline the list of medical data I'd need to furnish if I wanted to maintain the Medical Third Class certificate after October 31, 2025.?That said, my interest is in obtaining Basic Med certificate rather than maintain a Third Class medical. I guess that sounds like a Win! Cheers, Mike Bellino |
