Yes get your 3rd class. You will have held a medical, then you are eligible for Basic Med. That is the way I read this. I do not see basic med as a class of flight physical as it has its own limitations. Medical certification is technically challenging in itself.

I find this rather unexpected so I contacted the AOPA* Medical consultant I have been working with the last 2 years to get her take on this. In any case, I am operating under the assumption that this is a legitimate practice.?
*Yes, I just found out yesterday that EAA also has FAA medical consultants as I read through my EAA 'Welcome Packet'.
