Oh, there is a warning at the top which I had not noticed as it was above my default Terminal window size (terrible excuse, but I genuinely thought Direwolf launched itself differently). I doubt if this is relevant to the problem.
?
From my understanding it suggests using the Channel 1 rather than Channel 0 which is the default in the conf file, and contains the relevant lines for audio device and PTT. I am not sure what the -i or -I refer to, as I do not see these within the conf file.
?
~ $ direwolf -id
Dire Wolf DEVELOPMENT version 1.8 D (Oct 12 2024) Includes optional support for: ?cm108-ptt libgpiod Reading config file direwolf.conf
It is highly recommended that 1, rather than 0, is used with -i for best results. Using -i with 1200 bps is a bad idea. ?Use -I instead. Audio device for both receive and transmit: default ?(channel 0) Channel 0: 1200 baud, AFSK 1200 & 2200 Hz, A+, 44100 sample rate / 3. Note: PTT not configured for channel 0. (OK if using VOX.)
When using VOX, ensure that it adds very little delay (e.g. 10-20) milliseconds between the time that transmit audio ends and PTT is deactivated. For example, if using a SignaLink USB, turn the DLY control all the way counter clockwise. Using VOX built in to the radio is a VERY BAD idea. ?This is intended
for voice operation, with gaps in the sound, and typically has a delay of about a half second between the time the audio stops and the transmitter is turned off. When using APRS your transmiter will be sending a quiet carrier for about a half second after your packet ends. ?This may interfere with the the next station to transmit. ?This is being inconsiderate. If you are trying to use VOX with connected mode packet, expect
frustration and disappointment. ?Connected mode involves rapid responses which you will probably miss because your transmitter is still on when the response is being transmitted. Read the User Guide 'Transmit Timing' section for more details.

?? Check server status here http://107.170.42.65:14501 ?? [ig] # aprsc 2.1.19-g730c5c0
?? [ig] # logresp Kk78BCO-10 verified, server T2USANE IP and server name will vary of course.
?
These indicate that Direwolf has made the connection to the APRS-IS server and your callsign has been verified by the passcode.? This allows the communication from Direwolf to the server and thus full internet.? Any error message feedback would help understand why you are not being received by the APRS-IS system.

?-di Clearly meaning dyslexic (me). Since I have no understanding of what these Linux commands mean, I would never notice that I had reversed the letters consistently. Using -di the top comment about Channel 0 is green rather than red. But no other change. Robert, I have never seen a connection confirmation since things went south, according to APRS.fi on the 30th of September, as that is the last time my beacon reported to the IGSERVER. There seems to be no way to search the Terminal, and it also does not keep a log of everything, so I can't scroll back to the beginning of when I started DireWolf. 73 Tobias Feltus Polymath (but incapable of simple arithmetic) |
Hi Tobias,
Since you are running Direwolf on a Raspberry Pi, you should be able to use any of many different ways available on Linux to save the output on the Direwolf terminal (console). One way is the utility "tee" which continues to display the messages in the terminal and at the same time copying it to a file specified as commandline argument. Like this: ./direwolf -di | tee /tmp/direwolf-console.log Another way is the utility "script" which starts a new shell and saves all output in a file (default name is "typescript" but any other name can be specified on the command line. The logging stops when you exit from the sub-shell started by "script". Use it like this: You type: script /tmp/direwolf-console.log Outputs : Script started, file is /tmp/direwolf-console.log You type: ./direwolf -di ; exit There are other ways to achieve the same result, but some are specific to the GUI environment and Terminal application you are using (which may have built-in logging capability). If you are using a terminal emulator (such as putty for example) to connect to the Raspberry Pi than those too may allow logging (putty definitely does). The two methods shown above are simple and tend to be available on nearly every Linux/Unix platform. They will produce a logfile named direwolf-console.log inside the /tmp directory but of course you can pick any name or directory of your own preference. Having a log file for the entire Direwolf session will make it easier to find the messages you are looking for. 73, Thomas KK6FPP |
Thank you Thomas, this is helpful.
I started Direwolf running Tee. After an hour or so this is the log (below): now searchable, there is no line with "noam", so it definitely is not connecting to the IGSERVER.

Dire Wolf DEVELOPMENT version 1.8 D (Oct 12 2024)
Includes optional support for: ?cm108-ptt libgpiod Reading config file direwolf.conf

Let's simplify the situation.? Your config file is very cluttered, making it hard to understand.

Rob,
Network issues totally make sense, but I am able to ping the server with no issues and (as far as I am aware) I have disabled all firewalls on the RPi. This is also the same internet connection as I was running when it was working, the only difference is that the old RPi was wired and this one is connected via WLAN: hardware differences.

Direwolf does support IPv6, but some Pi installs recommend disabling it. ?? try ? ? ping -c 5 -6 noam.aprs2.net this will test if you Pi can reach the IPv6 server ?? The -c 5 is to limit the ping count (requests) to 5.? I always add alias ping='ping -c 5' in my .bashrc file. Robert Giuliano KB8RCO

Seems that I am able to access the server, which is good.
I am unable to access most settings in the router thanks to the monopoly status of the internet in the USA. We only have one ISP, and they locked us out of interfacing directly with the modem/router a couple of years ago.

One problem with our test method is that we are connecting to an address that can change.
?
Let's try direct to the source.? In a web browser, try connecting to
??
Somewhere on the page (usually under "Port Listeners") you should see an actual IP address and port.? I like to connect to 14580
? 44.10.10.10:14580
?
change you connection to that.? EXAMPLE:
IGSERVER 44.10.10.10 14580
?
The issue is that it may be busy, but if you get a message that it tries to connect, that is a positive result.
-------
Robert Giuliano KB8RCO |
This does not make sense.
If the configuration has a correct IGSERVER and IGLOGIN, direwolf should say something about connecting to APRS-IS.
Here is an example where it was successful the first try:
?
?
Sometimes a few addresses need to be tried before it succeeds:
?
?
Are you 100% absolutely certain that the correct configuration file is being used?
Is it in the current working directory?

John, honestly no, I am not confident that it is using the correct configuration file. I believe there is only one file called direwolf.con, which is in the same directory as Direwolf /home/KK7BCO/direwolf/build As you say, it seems strange that the log is not even printing an attempt to connect to the server. I just launched it as Rob suggests, using the fixed IP and gate. I will report later if there is any change, but currently the log shows nothing significant. T |
Did you run sudo make install and make install-conf to install direwolf on your Pi?
If you did, then there is a direwolf.conf file in your home directory (~/direwolf.conf).
From the V1.7 manual, it appears that is the "first place" direwolf looks.
?
I just tested this and direwolf definitely read /home/pi/direwolf.conf, NOT direwolf/build/direwolf.conf.
?? Interestingly, direwolf did not report the path of the conf file (as the V1.7 manual shows).
?? It simply reported Reading config file direwolf.conf so it is difficult to know where the file came from.
?
Try running with this command line:
???? direwolf -c direwolf.conf
to try and force the local direwolf.conf file to be used.
?
-------
Robert Giuliano KB8RCO |
?<insert minor swearing> Why on earth are there more than one direwolf.conf file in different locations?</end> My interpretation of the manual was that it would look in the home directory, not that there was a different configuration file which, of course, has not been modified and has no information in it. However, this file also does not have any reference to the audio input source either. The home directory also has an sdr.conf file. I do not recall whether I ran a command to install these, I followed instructions, I believe from the Github. I did have difficulty editing the conf file from the Terminal, so I have been editing it in the GUI, which could explain why I am editing one or another copy. My difficulty in editing things using the Terminal often is a dyslexic failing with "blind" directory hierarchies and typos (something lifetime linux users do not understand, I know). ANYWAY, trying to force the local direwolf.conf as you just suggested did not work, I think that forced the home directory one, as it would not decode. But I just copied the contents of the stripped down file to the home directory copy and I am now signed into the IGSERVER. I am not sure if it is all working however, as it is posting a thread of? [rx>ig] # It has not sent my location beacon yet, and is not decoding.? I will let it run for an hour, then post the log before I leave for work if this persists.
