Re: APRS.fi - igate v digipeater

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

"igate" has a fluid definition.? It generally means an aprs radio that sends information to the internet (APRSIS).? It
may or may-not also be a digipeater/transmitter.

The icons are entirely up to you.? A receive-only igate is commonly a <R>? black diamond.? A transmitting digipeater
with no internet connection is commonly the green star.?? I also see a transmitting igate+digipeater as a? black <T>
diamond.

Personally, I use the green star for digipeaters which also happen to be igates:

We can have another thread on the suggested use of the overlay symbol as well.

Reading and Understanding Direwolf Terminal Window

M0HKG - Martin

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm struggling to find the right terminology to be able to return the search results I need.

I've had a bit of a nightmare getting Direwolf working on a RPi connected to a GM350 - the issue was the radio is only a four channel unit and therefore the flat RX/TX signals weren't presented on the 16-pin connector at the rear. That was then, and they are now, after a bit of reworking of the radio...

What I'd like to find is an article/guide that would help me decode and better understand what Direwolf is telling me in the terminal screen whilst it's running - this stuff:

OK, makes sense.
Well all my questions have been answered and I believe my node is properly configured now and the other guy is fixing his node, so thank you everyone so very much! You are all GREATLY appreciated!

Re: APRS Messages on packet

My setup works for APRS and also works for Winlink packet (change frequency on the radio of course) without any changes to the .conf file. All I wanted to do was suppress the error reporting about the motorcycle symbol when it hears a Winlink packet beacon.

It works for both so the interface and radio aren't important but since you asked it's a plain USB soundcard and a FTDI USB serial port on the Pi to a Kenwood TM-V71A (set to Echolink Sysop mode).

Thanks for the clarification about the Digipi. :)

DigiPi is not a HAT, it is a Raspberry Pi image. Don¡¯t be mis-led by the comments about Fe-Pi (HAT) or any other audio HAT. It allows a user to pick the data mode they want to use and t loads the proper .conf for the job.. At one point, you might chose Winlink, and the next change to JS8CALL and then after that back to APRS. If you have a USB capable radio (IC-705) then it is practically automatic. The IC-705 stuff was developed early.

?

The way DigiPi works is, it copies a configuration for the mode you want to use into the Direwolf directory. There is no switching in a Direwolf.conf. Of course you could write a script to do the same.

In my test set up, I have direwolf.node.conf, direwolf.winlink.conf, direwolf.tnc.conf, direwolf.digi.conf. I have never seem a way for Direwolf to know what the user is up too.

?

DigiPi can use the Fe-Pi (which is a HAT), but, It can also use a DigiRig (radio interface ¨C not a HAT). The DigiRig is easy to work with. It at least does audio/CAT or audio/PTT.

Re: APRS Messages on packet

I think you need a different direwolf.conf.
In the DigiPi image, you make a use choice and the proper conf is loaded.

Re: APRS Messages on packet

Hi Danny,
That looks like a pretty standard packet beacon. Note that it's not in the APRS position beacon format. You'll see those on non-APRS packet frequencies as well to announce the station is there.?
The direwolf log message about attempts to decode APRS packet format can be turned off with the -qd argument to direwolf.

APRS Messages on packet

HI,

I've been using YAAC with direwolf on a Pi400 for APRS and decided to try using the same radio and the direwolf instance to connect to a Winlink packet gateway. It works as expected but I'm seeing an APRS related message in the direwold console that I would like to suppress.

K5PRK-10 audio level = 29(15/8)? ?[NONE]? ?_||||||||
[0.4] K5PRK-10>BEACON:Winlink 2000 RMS Packet Server<0x0d>

Unknown APRS Data Type Indicator "W", motorcycle

Is there something I need to change in the direwolf.conf to tell it we're not in APRS mode any more?

TIA

Re: APRS specification

Don't forget about all the corrections, enhancements, and addendums on . For example, the original specification doesn't even deal with the New-N paradigm for digipeating.

Hopefully, the effort to create a non-profit foundation to carry on Bob's vision will be able to release the consolidated APRS 1.2 specification (with all mandatory versus optional parts clearly identified).

thanks for reminder of this document (wow, 22 years old).

I find it amusing it was called this because it is Bob APR's system or APRS for short. Then they had to come up with something for what it stands for. Which is fine because once this system starts it automatically reports positions.
And it is now 30 years old, Bob sure knew how to develop a system of long endurance. RIP Bob
