Hello Keith,

Your issue stems from the "-" (dash) character on the command line just after the timestamp parameter.? Please see the Direwolf User Guide section 9.1.4 ( ) on how the configuration of your sound card should be done within the direwolf.conf file for OSX.? It's critical that you have the sound card either properly named within double quotes or using the numbering scheme.? You should be able to see either approach by just running direwolf from the command line and the startup text should give you a full list of possible devices.

Also...

> So my question is?what’s going on, why doesn’t this thing work? It works on my Raspberry PI just fine, so?I know the device is good.

OSX and Linux on Raspberry Pi are entirely different operating systems.? As such, they will have different configuration for the sound device.

Ps.? You don't have any PTT configured in your direwolf.conf.? This means you won't be able to transmit unless you're thinking of using VOX.? If so, please see Section 9.2.13.1 of the DIrewolf User Guide where it STRONGLY recommends not to do this.? YOU will encounter unsolvable problems.

Hello Geoffrey,

1) You are mixing up Mic-E and compressed position.
In mic-e the destination field is used to convey part of the position data and looks like random letters. In compressed position reports the position is base91 compressed and put into the ax25 info field and the destination field is cleartext.

Oh, ok.. I had understood that all compressed packets used the MIC-E format but I guess I'm wrong.? Thank you for the correction.

3) WIDE1-1 should be reserved for mobile/low power operation to take advatages of fill-in digipeaters which would only digipeat WIDE1-1 to help the mobile reach digipeaters located on better locations.

A fixed station using WIDE1-1 will cloak the frequency as it will trigger all the fill-in digipeater around where it does not need to. A fixed station shall use WIDE2-1 when only one hop is wanted.

I'll openly admit that the use of "WIDE1-1" only vs. "WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1" in metro areas is vague to me.? For example, in the Bay Area, CA (large urban metro area), one of our big APRS digipeaters beacons out the following:
--
[0.4] WR6ABD>BEACON,WIDE2-2:>Digipath just WIDE1-1 is enuf for most, helps us all.
--

Expanding on that, various web sites give various different answers:

--> scroll down to the "recommended universal path settings under the "New Paradigm"
--
?? - WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1? (Will produce two hops and will take advantage of home fill-in digis. Use in busy urban and suburban areas.)?? Recommended for the majority of mobile operations!

?? - WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2? (Will produce three hops and will take advantage of home fill-in digis. Use for mobile operation in rural areas with low APRS activity only!)

?? - WIDE2-2? (Shortest path string. Produces two hops by directly using two high-level digis. Will work almost anywhere but especially recommended in the American west where high-level digipeaters are really high-level; i.e. on mountain tops thousands and thousands of feet above users that can easily be reached directly, without the help of home stations.) Note that WIDE2-2 is the ONLY path that works with digipeaters in southern California.
????
?? - WIDE2-1? only? (This should be used by fixed stations, and will produce only one digipeater hop.? In most cases, fixed stations already have the advantage of a better antenna and elevation than a mobile, and should be able to reach a true wide-area digipeater without the aid of another home station.)
????
?? - Airborne stations above a few thousand feet should ideally use NO path at all, or at the maximum just WIDE2-1 alone.? Due to their extended transmit range due to elevation, multiple digipeater hops are not required by airborne stations.? Multi-hop paths just add needless congestion on the shared APRS channel in areas hundreds of miles away from the aircraft's own location.? NEVER use WIDE1-1 in an airborne path, since this can potentially trigger hundreds of home stations simultaneously over a radius of 150-200 miles.
--

K9DCI's excellent APRS documentation -
--
Fixed Stations:

Instead of the first WIDE1-1, substitute the call sign of your nearest wide area digi, or if needed, your
local fill-in digi. Example: K9ESV-2,WIDE2-1
--

Other web pages out there recommending WIDE2-2 -
--
A suggested standard path for a home APRS station is:

WIDE2-2
--

I could give a *lot* more examples here.

and this is compressed format
F4FXL-9>APX219,WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1:=/5kJZPK!A>a8G

To add on to the good responses Thomas and Rob already covered, three more things:

??? 1) since you can read the "APX219" packet destination in clear text, that means the packet is a non-compressed APRS packet

??? 2) Per and search for "APX", the sending APRS station is running Xastir v2.19 (most likely on Linux)

??? 3) This station is sending to WIDE2-2 which would propagate to a very wide geographic area ( ).? I would argue TOO wide for what might be the Houston, TX metro area and that packet will be using more than it's share of airtime on the frequency.? WIDE1-1 should probably be more than enough.

Object names need to be padded to 9 characters.?? The good packet is fully padded, the bad packet is only padded to 8 characters.

aprs101.pdf (google it) is your friend when it comes to interpretting APRS packet formats.

Direwolf's parser is apparently doing fixed offset parsing and the lack of a space has shifted the coordinates so they are not being parsed correctly.
