Interface DireWolf to existing KISS TNC?

I've been away from APRS for quite a while and I just found this software and started looking at it, and it looks really nice. One thing I'm not real clear on though is whether or not I am limited to using a sound card only interface??
I have a radio and TNC in KISS mode that works well for me, but I would love to have it talk KISS/AX.25 to my linux box and in turn use the AGWPE protocol to connect my application to over the network.?
Is this possible with DireWolf? I'm sure the soundcard solution works fine and exceeds the perfomance of many TNC's, but as I already have dedicated hardware for the task is the reason I'm pursuing this method. I am aware of ldsped, but would rather not use it as the author seems to keep tight reigns on it.?
