Hello Matieu,,

Good you are on this list now, which as you might know isn't devoted entirely to the Humanware players but all audio players and other devices that play DAISY and other formats.

Somewhat overwhelmed by the number of forwarded posts from across the pond, but I now have a good idea of what is in store for us if we upgrade to the mark III VR Stream, or whatever it may end up being called.

I have thought for a long time the VR Stream is long overdue an upgrade.? Good to see the support for large SD cards, upgrading of the network connectivitry to include 5Ghz connections and increased number of formats.? Little disappointed that Bluetooth 5 has not been incorporated.? USB C port very welcome.? The micro USB of the present player has always been fragile.

My major concern though now is whether the VR III player will be able to give us access to all the BBC radio streams here in the UK.? All using the Stream for the last few months to listen to BBC Shoutcast streams are aware the BBC is closing these in the next six months or so.? All BBC streams in the UK will have to be access via BBC Sounds which has to be logged into to access radio streams and more up to date podcasts.? So, my question to you is, will the new Stream be able to access these feeds in as easy a fashion as we've become accustomed to doing up until now?? I, along with many find the BBC Sounds app not much to our liking, prefering the few button presses to access not just a few but many feeds for BBC? national and local radio stations? As far as I can tell the Sounds app appears to give access to the local radio station where you live, not all the local stations the BBC has - 39 in total.

I would almost bet money on the surprise new feature as yet to be announced.??? If as I suspect Smart assistant is to be incorporated into the new Stream then it might just be that using that sort of interface might yet give us access to all th the radio we are accustomed to listening to via the internet.? (I don't expect you to reveal all on this though Matieu.

I have put this issue to Jonathan Mosen who will be featuring an interview with an HW spokesperson in his next Mosen at Large Podcast.? That person may even be yourself, Matieu! ?? Another interview I know is scheduled for the ACB Main Menu programme, and maybe the RNIB TechTalk in due course.

Hi!

So, about BBC, we started talking with them in December, and we're looking into potential solutions to keep carrying them. This is not something we would do for smaller or private companies, but as the BBC is a large public broadcaster, with a worldwide audience, we would absolutely love to keep carrying them.

As I said, we're in the middle of talks with them, but it's looking good. The technology they'll use is compatible with the Stream 3, so it becomes of matter of how it's integrated in the user interface.

As for Jonathan, yes it's actually me, and our lead developer Dominic that will be on the show. We're actually recording this about 90 minutes after the time I write this message for future broadcasting. :)

Mathieu

Welcome to the list. Will the new stream be able to read name files that have been put on the memory card from memory stick or disc? My other question is is the speaker louder than the 2nd gen stream all the Victor treck? Best Mrs Villa

Not necessary very much louder, but the sound is much better, crisper. Everyone that has tried it said it sounded much better.

And yes if you put files on an SD card or the internal memory in the proper folder ($VRText,$VRDTB, etc) it will see them!

However, we no longer support reading external sources like a USB stick. You'd have to copy the files from a stick to the internal memory or an SD card and insert it.

I use an adaptor to copy memory sticks on to my Victor Trek. I'd love to be able in the new stream to be able to rename files. As some things on memory stick don't get labelled properly when they are copied onto a memory card. Best Mrs Villa

I would say that¡¯s a down side to it to be fair, that it can¡¯t read from a USB stck.

?

The other down side that has always been the case with Streams, is the folder structure, it is bizarre. It should have one folder called Daisy, not $VR Anything, then the rest it should be able to read any audible media in any folder, such as MP3 files.

?

For me, that daft folder structure has always let the Stream down.

?

With other Daisy players, I won¡¯t name them here, they are not so rigid about the folder structure, except for the Daisy folder.

?

All the best

Hi Steve

?

I will agree with you regarding not supporting usb sticks etc, it removes that level of flexibility, being able to play files on different media gives us more choice. The other players I have here both offer the choice of using different media.

?

The folders are a bit messy, with my other players, I don¡¯t have to worry if the files are in the wrong folders but not the case with the stream.

?

I think the audible thing is possibly what is going to lower the sales for humanware but through no fault of theirs. ?

Like Pele in another mesage, I also find nothing to object to in the Streams file structure.

The removal of the ability to plug in external drives does seem a backward step to me.? I am guessing that the new Stream will plug into a PC or Mac and the internal memory be seen as a sort of virtual drive.

I cannot really understand the proliferation of apps to listen to radio, at least as far as simple streaming goes.? BBC Sounds is something of an exception and its rather all singing, all dancing interface is designed to get people exploring what the Beeb has to offer.? All well and good, except I already know what's on offer from our still treasured national radio provider - in spite of a rather crass approach by those pushing Sounds and indulging yet again in alienating older Listeners.? I want part of Sounds to be more like moving from an old style radio with presets in stead of the "Look at Me!" shouting interface that's Sounds.

Finally, on Podcasts, I did put the question to the Mosen at Large feature on whether the new stream would be able to "stream" podcats rather than having to download them to listen.? One thing the Blind Shell Classic does along wit the option to download a podcast.

Hi Ray/all,

?

To be honest, I¡¯d always rather have folders organised by something like author/artist than by media type.? I want all books written by the same person in the same place, rather than having to remember which title is in which format.? It has never made any sense to me to do it the other way.

I take your point Ed.

Thing is though that the Stream does handle rather more than just books.? Being able to save recordings made on the Stream and podcasts as well, searching for anything can be complicated.? At the moment I find going through saved podcasts quite complicated, though I don't really know how it could be made easier.

On the saving of radio programmes one has recorded "off-air" it would be good for me if I could search for say, Radio 4, Angel Radio which I sometimes record live, (there's no catch up facility there) and so on.

I suppose the soon to be 1TB of storage with the SD card being more or less permantly inserted, is going to be quite a challenge when it comes to searching for stuff.

For many blind people the Stream is relatively easy to usebut more complex use does need quite a lot of effort.? I hope that in time more sophisticated ways of finding stuff will come along.? Then again, it could be that linking to a computer and using search facilities with that might be an option.

Finally, before I forget, the hint that Bluetooth keyboard support might just be a possibility could be quite an enhancement.? Then again a competitor to the Stream available it seems only in the far east and and Australia appears to be offering control of smart phones from that device an option.? In fact I have often mused about the possibility of a keypad driven app driven by the Humanware interface, becoming available to use along with a smart phone.? If that could be implemnted then I woul look forward to using Audible and other book services with a keypad and blind-friendly navigation and with the ability to kil the phone while doing so as an option!

I do hope though that HW can pull off something with Audible to keep that going on the Stream.I would be tempted to audible if I can escape the obligation to use it on a smart phone.

Hi Ray

I use my audible books on my milestone but even bones would have issues with audible eventually, its audible who are the problem.

In some ways having the books from the same author would be better if you could have them in one folder, I don¡¯t know why the stream has to have different folders for different formats, you can understand it with txt and docx etc but not audio files.

Regards

Adrien

I take your point Ed.

Thing is though that the Stream does handle rather more than just books. Being able to save recordings made on the Stream and podcasts as well, searching for anything can be complicated.

For many blind people the Stream is relatively easy to usebut more complex use does need quite a lot of effort. I hope that in time more sophisticated ways of finding stuff will come along. Then again, it could be that linking to a computer and using search facilities with that might be an option.

Finally, before I forget, the hint that Bluetooth keyboard support might just be a possibility could be quite an enhancement. Then again a competitor to the Stream available it seems only in the far east and and Australia appears to be offering control of smart phones from that device an option. In fact I have often mused about the possibility of a keypad driven app driven by the Humanware interface, becoming available to use along with a smart phone.

Hi Ray/all,

To be honest, I¡¯d always rather have folders organised by something like author/artist than by media type. I want all books written by the same person in the same place, rather than having to remember which title is in which format. It has never made any sense to me to do it the other way.

Cheers,

Like Pele in another mesage, I also find nothing to object to in the Streams file structure.

The removal of the ability to plug in external drives does seem a backward step to me. I am guessing that the new Stream will plug into a PC or Mac and the internal memory be seen as a sort of virtual drive.

I cannot really understand the proliferation of apps to listen to radio, at least as far as simple streaming goes. BBC Sounds is something of an exception and its rather all singing, all dancing interface is designed to get people exploring what the Beeb has to offer. All well and good, except I already know what's on offer from our still treasured national radio provider - in spite of a rather crass approach by those pushing Sounds and indulging yet again in alienating older Listeners. I want part of Sounds to be more like moving from an old style radio with presets in stead of the "Look at Me!" shouting interface that's Sounds.

Finally, on Podcasts, I did put the question to the Mosen at Large feature on whether the new stream would be able to "stream" podcats rather than having to download them to listen. One thing the Blind Shell Classic does along wit the option to download a podcast.

The other down side that has always been the case with Streams, is the folder structure, it is bizarre. It should have one folder called Daisy, not $VR Anything, then the rest it should be able to read any audible media in any folder, such as MP3 files.

For me, that daft folder structure has always let the Stream down.

With other Daisy players, I won¡¯t name them here, they are not so rigid about the folder structure, except for the Daisy folder.

All the best

Not necessary very much louder, but the sound is much better, crisper. Everyone that has tried it said it sounded much better.

And yes if you put files on an SD card or the internal memory in the proper folder ($VRText,$VRDTB, etc) it will see them!

However, we no longer support reading external sources like a USB stick. You'd have to copy the files from a stick to the internal memory or an SD card and insert it.

Hi

Yes it was very interesting, but it is early days so lets see what hw have in store for the stream in years to come, there is loads of room for improvement.

Thank you for sending this Claire. It was very interesting. It didn't mention the future that I would like it to have. I'd like to be able to rename files. That would be extremely useful. Best Mrs Villa

Here¡¯s the very interesting interview from Humanware with Jonathan Mosen about the Stream 3:

Happy listening!
