DV Dongle Socket error
When I start D-RATS with my DV Dongle running and connected to a repeater (W5MPZ), I see the following error in my Event Log (socket error 10061, connection refused) and D-RATS isn't connected to the Dongle although I have the preferences set correctly. I assume there is a Windows Socket problem but don't know how to fix it. The OS is Windows Vista. -- 73 de N4VIP (SFARES EC, SANTA FE AND SAN MIGUEL COUNTIES DEC), Don

WL2K Gateway issue
Hi, I've been getting "Mail check failed ((100061, 'Connection Refused')) errors when working through WL2K Gateway. Here's the setup: Station #1 - Win7 32 bit on a laptop with Internet connection, connected via serial to an ID-880H. Running 0.3.3, WL2K gateway enabled, set for network/server.winlink.org/8772. Station #2 - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bit on a netbook, no Internet connection, connected via serial to an ID-31. Running 0.3.3, WL2K gateway disabled. All other D-RATS functions, chat, messages, and file transfer work fine between the two machines. I can send Winlink e-mail using the "send via" process, and it works great. When I request a mail check from the station #2 netbook, that's when I get the connection refused error. The only time I've seen a connection refused error on a native Winlink client is when the password is wrong, i.e. something other than CMSTELNET. Anyone have any insight as to what's going on here? Only part of the southern New Jersey section ARES is on D-STAR, the balance of digital communications go by Winlink, so if I can get this little issue squared away it will go a long way to improving interoperability. Thanks, John

Running D-Rats on Raspberry PI and have it autostart on boot 6
So you want to run D-Rats on the Raspberry Pi and it have automatically launch on power up. The GUI needs to launch every time the Pi starts. The build we are currently running is Raspbian "wheezy". This URL will tell you how to install D-Rats on the Pi. http://n0so.net/index.php?id=72 The executable files are stored under /usr/bin and are called: d-rats > D-Rats communication program d-rats_mapdownloader > download maps d-rats_repeater > D-Rats repeater Once the install is completed... start LXTERMINAL from raspberry PI desktop cd /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE sudo leafpad autostart You need to add the following statement at the end of the file and save the file. @d-rats_repeater All you need to do is to logoff and next time time GUI launches the D-Rats repeater will launch. You will have enable the repeater the 1st time and set your callsign. Mike K4MKH mike.k4mkh 'at' gmail.com

D-Rats and TNC ( Slow Transfer Speed) 3
A few months ago I connected my D-Rats to my local tnc(timewave pk96) in kiss mode and overall it worked great. Where I saw the slowness was in transfer speeds and retries. I was working with another local ham and we are only 5 miles away at max. I had found some document with some TNC value to set in D-Rats. Is there a trick to get the file transfer speed the same as what packet sends normally. Michael Hendershot - K4MKH

D-Rats Technical Support Needed 15
Orange County ARES/RACES/SKYWARN is attempting to acquire D-Star Repeaters from the county. We have a very good working relationship with the Office of Emergency Management. In the past two weeks we have been scrutinizing the D-Rats software to get a full understanding of how it works, capabilities and limitations. In order for us to pitch the idea of utilizing D-Rats to the OEM in support of an emergency activation, we have some questions and concerns that involve its operation which seems kludge at times. If someone can help find these workarounds, which we may have missed, it is greatly appreciated. This is a list compiled from three operators putting D-Rats through heavy paces. We apologize if these functions are available since we may not have discovered it. Thank you for your time. Version 0.3.3b6 1. When you first open the program, you have no idea anything is happening unless you are looking at the event log. 2. The program should initiate an automatic ping and list all stations at log on and timely thereafter. 3. I would expect to see my call listed in the right hand column including showing stations logged on. I have no idea if I am still connected as the program does not indicate anything other than "Online" in the bottom right. May times it says "online" but only to find out I was not. No rhyme or reason. My call sign showed up black on another stations screen. 4. I would also expect to see the color of the station reflecting whether they are "Online or Unattended" change instantaneously. There seems to be latency. 5. I would expect the stations list on the right to be instantaneously updated whenever a station changes it status. (On line or Unattended). . 6 I would expect the station call sign to disappear when the station is off line or they shut down their computer. This only seems to happen if you clear all then re-ping all. 7. If a station is off line when you try to send a message, the message stays in the outbox and is not sent. The program should state that the message was not sent because recipient is not logged on. 8. The program seems to "choke" when left running on a Win7 64 bit machine. Running it as administrator and not in the x86 pathway. 9. Why does the software tell me there is a message for "me" when sending email? 10. The ability to open a file in the shared folder from the program is not possible. 10. The ability to have sub-folders in the shared folder. As is, all files are lumped together in one file. This does not lend itself to ease of finding things. 11. Be able to move the map with the cursor and not have to use the scroll bars and have to continually re-center. 12. The ability to change the map labels font color and background color. Map labels are black on Red which makes it difficult to read. 13. The default message selection is an HICS-260 Patient Evacuation Form. Can we change it to default to the email selection? 14. What is the legend for the different colors on call signs in the Stations List? 15. The stations list seems quirky. I usually leave my software running. I always have to clear all then re-ping to get an updated list. The list should refresh automatically and remove any stations that are off line. 16. We notice that last update was over two years ago. Is this software still supported and will it continue going forward? Regards, Anthony J. Cioffi (N2KI)

International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend Aug. 17 & 18, 2013
Anyone using D-RATS for the ILLW this weekend? I am hoping to set up a laptop, as well as run D-STAR from the 1860 Light Station & Museum in Port Washington, WI. The club call for HF will be W9CQO, and we will have QSL cards, too. 73, Tom KC9ONY

CPU Usage 5
Has anyone any input on the CPU usage of the D-RATS application, mine starts out all happy but after some time (appears to be a few hours, I haven't actually clocked it yet) it gets up to just over 25% CPU usage according to Task Manager. All the while it is apparently sitting idle, having received a few QSTs and sent a few QSTs, perhaps logged a couple of station locations. I restart it and everything is fine for a while again but that is no way to have to use an application, of course. Your insight is appreciated. 73 Jerry N0JY

D-Rats hot-spot / ratflector and DV dongle query
Hello I am James / 2e1avx / MB6JP I have been playing with d-ats for the last month or so and love the simplicity..so far and what you can achieve with the software. I am now looking to stretch the bounderies and have a few additional questions. Firstly is it possible to have the repeater proxy connected to both rafflector network and a DV dongle and seemlessly pass connections both ways? I ahve been trying today but once the dongle is added everything stops working. Secondly, I have an existing network of about 10 users on ax25 packet / IP over radio. Last night I tested the TNC / ax25 part of d-rat and got it to transmit. Is it possible to set up a ratflector outside of the GUI, just on the command line to complement the existing ax25 / IP set up? Can you point me in the best direction to do this and set up? I am using a raspberry pi at the moment so want to keep it all command line and small config / space. Thirdly, moving away from tnc / ax25 if you you ampr.og 44 addressing on radio already (old school) you could set up RATS between IP radio stations. This would also work on the GHz wi-fi **mesh** networks and give higher speed connections. The ability to ateway between the analogue world and digital world and be able to exchange chat and mail (maybe files if you wait a week or so hi..) is appealing to me, it would generate a lot of interest and hopefully drive the RATS project forward and combine the 2 technologies and drive the hoby to the next generation. Sorry for the ramblings hopefully I stayed on topic, please let me know if you ahve any thoughts on this or ideas on the dongle bit? Thanks for your help and comments james / 2e1avx / mb6jp

D-RATS callsigns 2
John and the group, You have swerved into something I have tried to warn users about. You can have the same callsign on more than one instance of D-RATS, but please don't turn them on at the same time. As you can see, the chat operation was unpredictable. Just imagine two (or more) stations trying to respond to a mail transfer request - not good. If you need to have more than one station using the same callsign, please use a self-assigned designator. From the rules for Amateur Radio: § 97.119 Station identification. (c) One or more indicators may be included with the call sign. Each indicator must be separated from the call sign by the slant mark (/) or by any suitable word that denotes the slant mark. If an indicator is self-assigned, it must be included before, after, or both before and after, the call sign. No self-assigned indicator may conflict with any other indicator specified by the FCC Rules or with any prefix assigned to another country. It has become common practice to use a dash followed by a letter or number. This is sort of a moot point as the radio transmitting the data will identify itself with the MYCALL field. Still, using unique callsigns that conform to the rules is just good practice. The D-RATS "callsign" can be any eight characters, which allows for tactical callsigns like EOC, Hospital, Shelter or Post 1. This makes it easier on field operators since they won't have to remember which Amateur callsign is at which location. One thing I ask is PLEEEEEEEEEASE use an Amateur callsign on your D-RATS station unless you have a compelling reason to do so (like a declared emergency). Thanks for reading, Patrick (N3TSZ)

D-RATS & AX25 (9600 baud question) 14
All, I just got back into using D-RATS. I am using version 02232012 on a couple DR-235TMKIII's w/TNC (1.25 m). 1200 baud is working great!! I just can't get my two terminals to communicate at 9600 baud. My two terminals can communicate 9600 baud in terminal mode (using PuTTY). Can D-RATS communicate at AX25 at 9600 baud? Thanks for any response. --73 de N1OBU (Doug)
