I suggest that future polls also include a query to see how many use D-RATS (and D-Star) for the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES).

D-RATS and packet
2
I have been able to connect D-RATS to my TS-2000 and "talk" to a packet repeater. Here "talk" means I was able to get a CQCQCQ response. However, the repeater didn't accept my connect command issued by CHAT in D-RATS. How do I get into the packet system? 73 de N4VIP, (Santa Fe and San Miguel Counties, NM, DEC) Don Hinsman

Recovery from Crashed D-RATS
Issue: Recovery from Crashed D-RATS Situation: I inadvertently crashed D-Rats with an error in the config file and created the error message with the only options to QUIT, IGNORE or IGNORE ALL options. Choosing IGNORE resulted in a loop asking the same question, where IGNORE ALL resulted in the program proceeding but it was unable to re-open Preferences to make any changes. Deleting the D-RATS Program Folder and Start Menu Folder and Icon was unable to correct. D-RATS continued to bring up old incorrect configuration and preventing access to Preferences. Correction: Backup the data in the D-RATS Shared Folder (typically on the desktop in Windows) by copying folder to another location, for safety. If you know what you last changed in the configuration ("Preferences") you may be able to use a text editor (Notepad in Windows) and edit the configuration. The configuration file is called d-rats.config and in Windows you can locate the configuration file by doing the following: Go to Start -> Run Type %APPDATA%\D-RATS and hit OK In the resulting window, you'll see the d-rats.config file On Linux or MacOS the file is in your home directory, in the .d-rats subdirectory Edit the Configuration file and save. Re-Start D-RATS to see if it corrects the problem (it did for me). If not, try also re-installing the D-RATS over itseld, but if that fails, delete the D-RATS Program Folder and Start Menu Folder and Icon, then Re-install the program. Hopefully this helps someone else. 73 WD4CWG

Version number explanation
There has been some confusion concerning the numbering of beta releases of D-RATS and and their place along the timeline. Prior to the release of version 0.3.3, beta versions contained the number of the next official version followed by "bx". For example, after 0.3.2 was released, came: 0.3.3b1 0.3.3b2 0.3.3b3 0.3.3b4 0.3.3b5 0.3.3b6 then the official version of 0.3.3 was released. Since then, beta versions have become known as "daily builds" and contain the date in the file name (daily-MMDDYYYY). The latest daily build is "daily-02232012". You can download it from: http://dev.d-rats.com/drats_daily/daily-02232012/ If you want to be notified of new beta releases and other developments, join the mailing list on the D-RATS website.

New Folders in Files Section
Hi Folks, I have made some folders in the Files section to put Map Overlays files into. The thought process is that if you can come up with an overlay for your county or your town with specific locations for disaster relief we will be that much more prepared. The ability of DRATS is only as good as the input from YOU. Thanks for helping the effort N2KTO

HOWTO Runs D-RATS on a Raspberry Pi Document Updated in Files Section
Hi Folks, The subject HOWTO document has been updated adding a "Post Installation Notes" section. The first note adds instructions for allowing the default user on the Raspberry Pi to access the serial port. I found out (the hard way) that the user "pi" on the Raspberry Pi does not have permission to use serial ports by default. Access to the serial port is required to use the Raspberry Pi with D-RATS and a D-STAR radio... or an analog radio with a TNC. FYI: I know this is not the subject of this forum, but the Pi runs the CHIRP radio programming software just fine too, and it's also in the debian raspbian apt-get repository. Mike, N0SO

The DVAP and Using D-STAR Low & High Speed Data Presentations at ARRL/TAPR DCC 2012
-----Original Message----- From: KN4AQ To: kn4aq Sent: Thu, Jan 10, 2013 8:09 am Subject: HamRadioNow - Double Dose of D-STAR from the DCC HAMRADIONOW EPISODES 48 and 49: The DVAP (Under the Hood); Using D-STAR Low and High Speed Data; Online Now These are the last two of the regular 45-minute seminars from the 2012 ARRL/TAPR DCC. Coming soon - the banquet Keynote talk, and the 4-hour "deep dive" into GNU Radio. This time - Moe Wheatley AE4JY describes how he did the hardware side of the D-STAR DVAP (Digital Voice Access Point Dongle) and DVDongle. Moe usually sits back and let's Robin Cutshaw AA4RC to all the talking about these products (Robin did the software side). But this time, it's Moe in the spotlight, and he does a great job. And John Davis WB4QDX will guide you through using D-STAR's low and high speed data. That low speed data rides along with every D-STAR voice transmission, but few users do anything with it. You need a computer plugged into the radio to access the data function, but after that, it's easy. John shows you how. HAMRADIONOW is an online podcast from Amateur Radio//Video News. Raspberry PI GURU NEEDED
8
We need someone that is skilled in Linux that can handhold us through the installation of Linux distros and apt-get inputs to make the DRATS network function under the Raspberry PI platform. The issue is that most of us are not schooled in the Linux command line inputs to get the job done. We need Line by Line input commands to help us understand the Linux command line input. It can get as simple as plug in your Raspberry Pi then wait for the prompt to say>>>>>>>> input apt-get somthingThatIcantEverHopeToUnderstandButInstructMeNone TheLess...... Thank you in advance for any help you can provide to the DRATS community! Dave

Rasberry Pi Serial Port (was: Raspberry PI GURU NEEDED)
Thanks again Ed, I had a MAX3232 chip and an RPi proto board so i wired up a homebrew interface. I got the proto board so I could experiment a little with an RPi in at some future date. I've also got some FTDI USB serial <--> USB cables (http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/DataSheets/Cables/DS_TTL-232R_CABLES.pdf) - I use them to make serial data CAT, CW and PTT cables for radios, but I only had RS-232 and 5V TTL level parts, no 3.3V cables. Thanks again, I had no idea the IO pins included a serial port until you pointed it out! Mike, N0SO

Fedora 18 Linux D-RATS Binary and Source RPMs Available
Fedora Users, You've probably heard by now, Fedora 18 was released a few days ago. If you're running Fedora 18 and would like to get the latest d-rats_daily for Fedora 18, Fedora Linux RPMs for the latest daily build are now available in the KK7DS Ham-Apps yum repository. To add the repository as a software source, please follow these instructions: http://www.d-rats.com/component/content/article/30-d-rats-yum-repository/ For those who don't wish to use the repository, or who may want to build from source themselves the RPMs are available for download here: http://n0so.net/fileadmin/ham/apps/rpm/fedora/18/SRPMS/d-rats-daily_02232012-1.fc18.src.rpm http://n0so.net/fileadmin/ham/apps/rpm/fedora/18/i686/d-rats-daily_02232012-1.fc18.i686.rpm http://n0so.net/fileadmin/ham/apps/rpm/fedora/18/x86_64/d-rats-daily_02232012-1.fc18.x86_64.rpm Enjoy and 73, Mike, N0SO

D-StarQuery D-RATS plugin
All, There is a function within all Icom D-STAR repeaters that utilizes low-speed data called "D-StarQuery". You can find it as a part of the "D-Star Monitor (DSM)" and its located on /opt/dstarmon directory. Essentially, it is where you can send some commands (queries) using low speed data and access information from a repeater. I found the following website that describes it also briefly and shows how it operates. That website is the following: http://ladstar.org/ls.htm. I ran across the following e-mail at http://intrepid.danplanet.com/pipermail/drats_users/2010-January/002775.html and decided to attempt adding this on to D-RATS. << Hi OMs, Happy New Year to all. I've written a little "contrib" for D-RATS, a plugin who allow you to perform a DStarQuery server for D-RATS networks!!! The small server listen on 9100 port and every prefixed by ?* chat message is analized to match with commands in the .ini file. You can define commands as you need. See the examples. Python source code and infos are in http://www.d-rats.com/download/contrib/d-rats_query.tar.gz. I've tested it on a linux box only, windows users please report errors or defects. Comments, requests and suggests are welcome! If you modify the source, please give a feedback to me. 73s de Leo, IZ5FSA >> I 've downloaded the software and it is now running right now on the KC9SJY D-RATS station. It doesn't require a D-STAR repeater (ratflector) to run. You simply run the command, as: python d-rats_query 127.0.0.1 9100 <D-RATS port> (Not sure what the use for 9100 is and whether multiple D-RATS ports can be used) Use of D-RATS ratflector is not required but can be utilized with this. Let me know by e-mail if you would like to try it on the system here, otherwise, bring up D-RATS and watch for the QST for the information. I haven't had any time in setting anything up, so, if you access anything by using this, it will be Italian. Any questions about this, please feel free to ask. 73 Josh, AB9FT

Radio settings for ID-31A/51A
3
For thos with new ID-51A handhelds, here are the menu settings for D-RATS. I believe they will be the sam for the 31A, but someone please verify as I don't have a 31A. GPS>GPS TX Mode = OFF, GPS>GPS Auto TX = OFF, DV Set>DV Data TX = Auto By the way, I am using the RT Systems USB-RTS05 cable as the shell of the 2.5mm plug is very slim and fits completely in the data jack. Private Chat Tab or Window - How to close
6
I tried to set up a "Private Chat" with a friend on D-Rats the other night just to see how it works. I never did connect with him so I tried to close the windoe or chat session. There doesn't appear to be a way to close the Private Chat tab created. Now the "Tab" with my firends call sign just stays there in the chat window. How do I close it? I checked the manual and other than describing what it is, there doesn't appear to be any details on how to use it or, in my case, shut it down. Thoughts?

Configuring d-Rats for a Reflector?
4
Occasionally I see someone in the Chat tab say "XYZ Net on REF30C" or "AB1ABC is explaining the meaning of life on REF004C". So how to I get to REF30C or REF004C (which I assume are "reflectors") in D-Rats? Or can I? I've checked the on-line documentation but don't see it. I've looked on the DSTAR pages and don't see anything jump out about how to navigate to a specific reflector within d-Rats (which suggests to it's not possible - but I don't want to miss something). Any suggestions or a URL to the documentation? Thanks! KK4LAC Bob
