Turn Off Transmit Message on Radio

spikels6

On the File " Using_D-RATS_with_your_D-STAR_radio.pdf ", what is meant by the "Turn off the TX message on your DSTAR radio as it uses bandwidth that could be used to transmit DRATS
data."

Do I select a line with nothing in it, or is there an on/off switch somewhere in the IC-2820's Menu? I am trying to send email via the radio RF.

Spike

My IC-91AD lets me select one of five TX messages, or none/off. I guess the 2820 is the same. The TX message uses the same data frames as low speed data, so sending a TX message from your radio and transferring data from the serial port uses more data frames per transmission and therefore takes longer. With a transfer rate of 900 bps, every little bit helps.

Thank you for the tip. I did that, but nothing wants to go out by RF. Must be another setting/configuration problem somewhere.

Pat, what would be the setting on a 31A?? DV Data TX?? Mine is set to auto.?
?
I am having problems using a repeater to send low-speed data.? If?w use simplex (N5BGC and N4VIP) then we have 100% success with the Test Connectivity.? However, if we go to a repeater (W5SF), then 0%.? N5BGC has a signal analyzer and can see the signals going into the repeater but R2D2 coming out?

Try setting warmup timeout to zero and warmup blocks to 16. This prefixes empty data blocks to the D-RATS data, thus giving the repeater/gateway time to open a path before the real data starts.

Also consider that the low speed data portion of the D-STAR stream does not have forward error correction as the voice segment does. If you are hearing R2D2, (it sounds like Cousin Itt to me) you may not have a good enough signal into the repeater for a reliable connection.

If your radio transmits when you press send, you have it set right.

If you are using a USB data cable, try going to the device manager and changing the port number to 4 or lower if possible. I have also heard that manually entering the com port number rather than selecting it from the list will cure the issue.

Hope this helps,

For N3TSZ, many thanks Pat.? I had to search how to change the COM port from 11 to 3 but was able to do so.? And I found a setting for the ID-31A under Function that is called Data Speed.? The manual says for low-speed data transmission it should be 4800 but for connected external devices (e.g. GPS), it should be 9600.? The default is 9600!? So after setting 4800 and COM 3, we were successfully able to transmit low-speed data emails 100% through two different repeaters (W5SF and W5MPZ).?
?
Do you know if we can also use a linked reflector?
?
And thanks again, you helped us make another step forward in using D-RATS together with D-STAR as a valuable EMCOMM tool.

Congrats Don,

The low speed data is interleaved with the voice portion so, wherever the voice goes, the data will follow. REF015C is reserved for data transmissions so you could give that a try. Nobody hangs there, so you might want to make a sked with someone for an experiment.

Good luck and 73.
