I posted this originally on the D-STAR group, and I'm moving it here to what seems like a more appropriate place. Sorry for the cross post.
I've got a ratflector set up on PC on my LAN, and have been playing around trying to learn more about D-RATS. The setup is as follows. PC #1 runs D-RATS with either an RF connection to the ratflector over my 92AD or a network connection. PC#2 is running the D-RATS repeater app and D-RATS. It is connected via RF and/or network. PC#2 has a check by "Connected to Internet".
SMTP turned off on PC#1. SMTP is set up correctly on PC#2 and it is set to forward messages. I am 100% confident that the SMTP server settings are correct, and I can connect to the SMTP server from this PC. I've confirmed that. I have an Email Access rule in place for my email and call sign.
I can connect from PC#1 to PC#2 over the local network, and I can chat and send files. I have I can send an email from PC#1, telling it to Send Via PC#2. The message shows up in the D-RATS inbox on PC#2, and the message at the bottom of the screen says it is forwarding it. However, it never hits the internet, and it never clears from the outbox on PC#2.
I also tried creating and sending an outbound email from PC#2. It is never delivered and sits in the outbox until I delete it.
I ran Wireshark on PC#2 watching for packets going to my mail server, and I never see anything attempt to connect to that IP or port.
Strange thing is I had this working a couple of days ago. I know I did something to break it, but can't "un-break" it.
Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this further? What causes D-RATS to attempt a connection to a SMTP server via the internet instead of trying to pass mail through the radio links?

If you are using winlink email, remember that you have to put "WL2K:callsign" on the To: line, and "WL2K//" and the subject, on the subject line.

We are looking at exactly this problem and note the same findings. I believe the software is grabbing the msg and looking for the Station listed as the:"TO" address. The software wants to know if the station you wish to contact is connected to the network. If so it should see the "TO" Station in the right panel. If it does not see your Target Station, the software HOLDS the msg waiting for the Target Call to appear. It will wait very patiently forever to get a chance to send the msg. That is why the msg stays in the Outbox even if you hit SEND. We have had plenty of trouble trying to reach the Target Station and agree with you completely. Try my suggestion and see what happens. Of Course you must have the ACCESS folder data set to "URCALL, Both,<blank>" I believe that your Target Call must also have an entry in the ACCESS Folder so that you give yourself permission to send and receive msgs with that Call as well. The Messages Folder should have auto send enabled, too. GL, Ed, W5TWR

I’ll provide my understanding of D-RATS messaging (hopefully it is correct).
?
First, how are you addressing the message.? If you just put the callsign, D-RATS looks to see if that station is currently online to accept messages.? If not,
it holds it in the Outbox until it sees the station.
?
If you are sending to an SMTP address (xxx@...), it looks to see if the originating PC has Internet connectivity on its own.? If not it doesn’t know how
to send the message.? If your station does not have Internet connectivity (RF only) and you know another station on D-RATS does, you can use the SEND VIA when sending the message and put the callsign of the connected station.

I'm having the same problem using the D Rats Client. I get some sort of Boolean error in the Debug Log.
My Pop is set up and I receive email from my Google Drats account. I can not send outbound Internet email (smtp) for example va7kmg.drats@...
I still want to get the Wl2k working as well
I know last year I was able to get it to work using the D rats and Gmail PDF file set up

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen.
John, that is the way I understand it. I believe Ed is on to something here. I changed the rules as (I think) Ed suggested, and I can now send mail outbound! However, inbound is no longer working. Now that I suspect that this is an Email Access rule issue I'm going to play around to see if I can find a combination that works for both inbound and outbound. For now I've got the following on the rats PC
CallSign = W4DTO Access = Both Email Filter = {blank}
CallSign = W4DTO-1 (this is the callsign I have on the rats PC) Access = Email Filter = {blank}

I saw * in the docs.?? Will try that.?? It's sending outbound without a problem at this point.? What I'm looking for now is the rule that says, "if an email comes inbound from the internet and it is addressed to xxx@... send it to callsign xyz."??? The wildcard rule seems to be breaking that right now.? But, I've made good progress thanks to the replies on this thread! ? Thanks! Dan ?

Just a follow up. I email working in both directions now. I created two Email Access rules on PC #2 (the one that runs the ratflector:
Rule #1: Callsign = {my callsign} Access = Both Email Filter = {blank}
Rule #2 Callsign = {my callsign} Access = Incoming Email Filter = {the email address that I have set up in D-RATS on PC #1]
When I added rule #1 I was able to send messages out, but not back in. Rule #2 causes messages that come in to the email address that I specify in the rule to be forwarded to the call sign in rule 2.
I have been sending test messages out all afternoon, and it seems to work without a problem.

Hi Dan, On POP Mail check to see if your ISP requires security and that you have the correct port. Ports 25 and 110 do not require security. Port 995 requires SSL to be enabled. Also check to see which additional ports you can try for POP mail. it may turn out another Port might be better. It's easy to forget which need TLS or SSL. If your ISP requires a password for POP, you won't get it unless you get SMTP to send the PW first and then after SMTP, it can send POP Mail. These may be linked this way for your ISP. HTH, Ed
