Re: D-Rats for EMA Users

If the Control Operator is licensed and on-site for the band you're transmitting on you shoud be OK.

A transmission is a transmission where it's voice or data VOIP thats eventually transmitted over to RF on Amateur Freqs, so look at the "Control Station Operator Rules."

Example;

Field Day Demos;

A Non Licensee(walk up civilian) can use the privileges of an Extra Class(or other License Class) if the Extra Class is the Station or Control Operator and operating within his privileges.? The Extra Class has to be present at the station.

I would review the "peculiar use" restrictions/rules, (just as a refresher if the EMA has additional questions or what if's)..

If you were running Fedora Linux I could give you a .service file that would start it on boot.

Try editing the rc.local file and add something like this:

/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/d-rats_repeater -C

To edit rc.local:

vim /etc/rc.local

Check the path for where Python and d-rat_repeater and rc.local are installed! they may be in a different folder on Ubuntu.

Re: Gateway/Ratflector

You can run D-RATS on the same computer that hosts the gateway. Download
and install the D-RATS software and run the D-RATS repeater utility.
Mark the "Accecpt incoming connections" box and click the On button. I
believe the G4KLX software will let D-RATS connect to the low speed data
stream of the repeater radio. For more information, download "Running
your own Ratflector.pdf" from the files section of this group.

Is there a way to run a gateway or ratlfector software on the computer

Hi Dan,

OK so the next stage up from ax25 / packet radio is to put the old TNC in kiss mode and from Linux assign an IP address to the radio interface.

In Ham radio we have ampr.org which is a full class A subnet 44.0.0.0

it basically means you can build an IP network connected over normal ham radio 2 meters 70 cms or whatever.

Much slower but think wi-fi

given each radio station is now an IP address on a network, there is no reason to set ratflector to talk ax-25.

You set up ratflector to listen on port 9001 on your 44.x network (radio side) and get the other radio users to point the d-rats client over network to 44.x.y.z

The radios will key up and send the data back and forth

This will also work over the mesh (wi-fi) networks used by hams

I guess its much easier than ax25 as far as the ratflector goes and you should at least get tnc talking to the main d-rat server

How we span in to the d-star network I have no idea..

Cheers

James.

Re: D-RATS callsigns

I have on several occasion setup a network with many different computers running D-Rats.

I typically use KA8JMW, KA8JMW-1...? D-Rats users then sees each of these as unique stations.

John and the group,
You have swerved into something I have tried to warn users about. You can have the same callsign on more than one instance of D-RATS, but please don't turn them on at the same time. As you can see, the chat operation was unpredictable. Just imagine two (or more) stations trying to respond to a mail transfer request - not good. If you need to have more than one station using the same callsign, please use a self-assigned designator. From the rules for Amateur Radio:

§ 97.119 Station identification.

(c) One or more indicators may be included with the call sign. Each indicator must be separated from the call sign by the slant mark (/) or by any suitable word that denotes the slant mark. If an indicator is self-assigned, it must be included before, after, or both before and after, the call sign. No self-assigned indicator may conflict with any other indicator specified by the FCC Rules or with any prefix assigned to another country.

It has become common practice to use a dash followed by a letter or number.

This is sort of a moot point as the radio transmitting the data will identify itself with the MYCALL field. Still, using unique callsigns that conform to the rules is just good practice.

The D-RATS "callsign" can be any eight characters, which allows for tactical callsigns like EOC, Hospital, Shelter or Post 1. This makes it easier on field operators since they won't have to remember which Amateur callsign is at which location.

One thing I ask is PLEEEEEEEEEASE use an Amateur callsign on your D-RATS station unless you have a compelling reason to do so (like a declared emergency).?

Thanks for reading,
Patrick (N3TSZ)
