ID-880 Settings for D-DRATS

I'm trying to get D-RATS configured for the first time with my ID-880H. ?Every site that I see about this combination says that I must set the radio value DVT=DVTAT. ?I have found all the other recommended settings on the radio, but not DVT.

Thoughts?

Module D (REF015D) is designated for DRATS use. I would tune in but am stuck at work til 1800 eastern time.

Hi Dan,

OK so the next stage up from ax25 / packet radio is to put the old TNC in kiss mode and from Linux assign an IP address to the radio interface.

In Ham radio we have ampr.org which is a full class A subnet 44.0.0.0

it basically means you can build an IP network connected over normal ham radio 2 meters 70 cms or whatever.

Much slower but think wi-fi

given each radio station is now an IP address on a network, there is no reason to set ratflector to talk ax-25.

You set up ratflector to listen on port 9001 on your 44.x network (radio side) and get the other radio users to point the d-rats client over network to 44.x.y.z

The radios will key up and send the data back and forth

This will also work over the mesh (wi-fi) networks used by hams

I guess its much easier than ax25 as far as the ratflector goes and you should at least get tnc talking to the main d-rat server

How we span in to the d-star network I have no idea..

Cheers

James.

Re: D-RATS callsigns

I have on several occasion setup a network with many different computers running D-Rats.

I typically use KA8JMW, KA8JMW-1...? D-Rats users then sees each of these as unique stations.

If you need to have more than one station using the same callsign, please use a self-assigned designator. From the rules for Amateur Radio:

§ 97.119 Station identification.

(c) One or more indicators may be included with the call sign. Each indicator must be separated from the call sign by the slant mark (/) or by any suitable word that denotes the slant mark. If an indicator is self-assigned, it must be included before, after, or both before and after, the call sign. No self-assigned indicator may conflict with any other indicator specified by the FCC Rules or with any prefix assigned to another country.

It has become common practice to use a dash followed by a letter or number.

This is sort of a moot point as the radio transmitting the data will identify itself with the MYCALL field. Still, using unique callsigns that conform to the rules is just good practice.

The D-RATS "callsign" can be any eight characters, which allows for tactical callsigns like EOC, Hospital, Shelter or Post 1. This makes it easier on field operators since they won't have to remember which Amateur callsign is at which location.

One thing I ask is PLEEEEEEEEEASE use an Amateur callsign on your D-RATS station unless you have a compelling reason to do so (like a declared emergency).?

sorry tnc to d-rats only not the ratflector...

The DV dongle is more proof of concept, its the only D-Star item I have access to at this time, so think of it as a radio (to be bought at Christmas!)

Will test tnc again tonight with my fellow packet guy and see if we get anywhere, will report back tomorrow.

Did you see if you ran 44 IP over packet you could easily connect ratflector to network / 44 and put it over radio????

Will test that also..

I had hoped that it could be an easy fix, but I haven't been able to get anywhere with it. ???Everyone we have talked to (including the developer) about it has said that there is not much developing going on with the ratflector app, and they don't seem to see much interest in AX25 on a ratflector.?? I think it would be an extremely useful tool if it could be made to work.?

?

James, I just read your email again, and I believe you said you made a TNC work with a ratflector but not with a dongle.? Did you really make a TNC work with a ratflector?? That is what I have had trouble accomplishing.??

?

I don't really see the benefit of connecting a dongle to a ratflector.?? A DVAP, maybe but not sure about a dongle.???? Are you trying to connect a DV-Dongle????

?

My idea was to have a ratflector with a TNC and D-STAR radio connected. ??That would allow both D-STAR and non-D-STAR radios to connect to the ratflector.?? Then, the ratflector could connect to multiple D-RATS nodes, and everyone would be tied together.??? I'm not sure what a DV-Dongle would add to that.

I did report back on the dv-dongle in the repeater and that DID NOT work either.

Works fine in the d-rats application though

D-Rats hot-spot / ratflector and DV dongle query

mb7usm

Hello I am James / 2e1avx / MB6JP

I have been playing with d-ats for the last month or so and love the simplicity..so far and what you can achieve with the software.

I am now looking to stretch the bounderies and have a few additional questions.

Firstly is it possible to have the repeater proxy connected to both rafflector network and a DV dongle and seemlessly pass connections both ways? I ahve been trying today but once the dongle is added everything stops working.

Secondly, I have an existing network of about 10 users on ax25 packet / IP over radio. Last night I tested the TNC / ax25 part of d-rat and got it to transmit.

Is it possible to set up a ratflector outside of the GUI, just on the command line to complement the existing ax25 / IP set up?

Can you point me in the best direction to do this and set up?
I am using a raspberry pi at the moment so want to keep it all command line and small config / space.

Thirdly, moving away from tnc / ax25 if you you ampr.og 44 addressing on radio already (old school) you could set up RATS between IP radio stations.
This would also work on the GHz wi-fi **mesh** networks and give higher speed connections.

The ability to ateway between the analogue world and digital world and be able to exchange chat and mail (maybe files if you wait a week or so hi..) is appealing to me, it would generate a lot of interest and hopefully drive the RATS project forward and combine the 2 technologies and drive the hoby to the next generation.

Sorry for the ramblings hopefully I stayed on topic, please let me know if you ahve any thoughts on this or ideas on the dongle bit?

Thanks for your help and comments

D-RATS callsigns

John and the group,

Sly, one more thing that puzzled me yesterday morning as I was trying to confirm my settings for you.? I had one instance of D-RATS running on my PC connected to the 51 (the radio link).? I had another running on the Internet on another PC.? I have a Ratflector that bridges Internet to RF.

?

I could see the 51 keying up, but would not receive data from my other station.? I could ping from either and the station lists would update, but no chat data would pass between.

?

I fionally realized that I had both stations with the same callsign in the D=RATS preferences.? I added a -5 to my 51 station and everything worked.? I learned a lesson that it’s okay to run the same callsign on all of MY d-RATS stations as long as I’m not using more than one.? Most likely, I would be putting a tactical call in the Preferences when actually operating.

I had followed a setup guide posted several months ago on this group for the 51 and GPS OUT setting was not mentioned thus missed by me. Not sure if ON is factory default but I don't ever remember changing it.
