Let’s have a candid conversation.
We have some pretty big jobs in the near future coming up for install that are slated for Home. ?We’ve been doing what I’m sure everyone has been doing for the last two years and have been robbing, borrowing, eBay-ing and begging for gear to get jobs completed. ?Things are getting serious now and without processors or remotes we cannot complete our contracts. ?They aren’t just on backorder, they just don’t exist at all it seems. ?We have nowhere to pivot and have C4 and RTI guys right up the street ready to pounce with product in hand. ?What is the end game here? ?How are we supposed to continue to survive with Crestron with no product leaving out the door? ?I fully understand supply chain issues as we are direct with many brands…but Crestron is by miles the worst right now. ?I can’t just keep telling everyone that they have to wait 10 months for something especially when so many other options are in stock. ?I unfortunately haven’t had any positive information from Crestron on the topic either, just somewhat aggressive emails telling me we’re all in the same boat and they are trying their best. ?They beat us to death with Home and just as we started to embrace it it stopped being available. ?Can we all have a real conversation about how to keep afloat? ?Can we talk about how to sell Crestron systems when no product is available at all?

开云体育So what I’m seeing on the commercial side as both a CSP and as a government client’s owner’s rep on a large project… it’s not that no product is leaving the door it’s that product is leaving the door slowly. A lot of it is expectation management, but there is some substitution etc. In the past week I have heard of a few different processor deliveries substantially ahead of a the ship date previously quoted. ? NVX and DM is killing me though I really don’t want to have to pivot away – particularly since that programming was completed ~6 months ago on the basis of NVX – but I’m not seeing any signs of light at the end of the tunnel there like hope I am for processors. ? -- Lincoln King-Cliby, CTS, DMC-E-4K/T/D ? It only makes sense to pivot to other products that are actually available.
It may be costly and time-consuming to learn a new control platform (or two), but it's better to invest in that, than to lose projects & customers. This will also make you more flexible and versatile in the future. When it comes to DM & NVX, they're pretty easy to replace, these days, in most applications. Lots of manufacturers have options available. I really look forward to Crestron having reasonable lead times and availability again, but that's just not happening fast enough to keep cash coming in and technicians working - and dates keep slipping farther into the future. They're not paying any of us to sit around waiting! -?Scott Lee

It's painful to have to switch manufacturers but really it's a chance to grow and expand what we have to offer our clients.
We can offer AMX, Crestron, QSC, Extron and others but most of us only offered Crestron because of incentives which limited our growth but we were fine with that because we were making good money. I think those that can offer other products and survive will be stronger once this shortage is over. I guess I'm looking for the silver lining. |
I agree Scott ... DM & NVX are pretty easy to replace.
Processors and lighting (CLX-2DIMU8s!!!!!), however, are not, and they are actually responsible for holding up residential cert. of occupancies. While Lutron dimming modules are a bit shorter lead time, keypads are the big problem for them. Also, you have the Lutron vs. Crestron (1x4 vs. 2x8) form factor and panel differences. We've found that if Crestron is legitimately holding up a CO for a client, get your rep the information necessary to escalate the product delivery dates to ASAP status. Crestron absolutely doesn't want to be responsible for keeping a client out of a new home. That leaves a bad taste in the mouth of architects, designers, builders, and clients for years to come. 开云体育The problem for me as a small Crestron dealer is to keep up with a variety of manufacturers. I started a couple of years ago with RTI, Control4 and Crestron, then dropped RTI and now dropped Control4 because it?s just very time-consuming to be fluent on multiple systems. At the time deciding to drop Control4, the supply chain issues started… ? With VC4, you can at least get around the processor shortage (I heard there will be a VC4-based appliance for Home as well soon), but the rest is still a problem… ? Cheers, Thorsten ? The key to survival is diversity.? Our Savant and C4 dealership has been dormant for years, until recently.? Frankly what they offer is great and it ships today.? The one catch is neither are built for certain types of commercial applications, i.e. no DSP control.? VC4 is a learning curve and I use Linux daily.? I've finally got it to a place where I believe it will cover needs, but we still can't procure IR/rs232 boxes or UI.? If you can do all IP control and mobile UI, it looks like a good option for those niche jobs.? In looking around everybody and their dog are developing commercial control systems.? Honestly, they look good and are simple to program, big changes are on the horizon.??

I have MC4R and CP4R processors on order from Feb 2022 and they are now telling me to expect q2 or q3 2023. The lack of key processors from Crestron is forcing us to stop recommending, quoting and selling Crestron. Virtually every other Crestron product depends on either the CP4R or MC4R units - nothing works in Crestron Home OS without these processors. I do not understand why Crestron does not stop everything else till these processors are ready to ship. Is Crestron going under???? What other vendors would any of you recommend? We are Control 4, URC, and Josh dealers as well as Crestron, but each of those systems has major shortcomings.

开云体育Sadly, I have had to program Savant systems for former Crestron customers that want to upgrade.? It is not just that Crestron is hard to get.? The real problem is we will lose our clients to other firms that install inferior product while we wait for Crestron unless we offer something they can get now.? Savant is shipping full line.? Their sandbox is rather large and they have potential to allow for a fair bit of monkey-business to suit special automation requirements.? They are not quite a substitute for Crestron in an ultra specialized application, but their product does what it does quite reliably. ? What have others heard about other brands (C4, Savant, Lutron, RTI, etc.)...
Though some seem to be experiencing longer leads now, its' nothing like Crestron... 1. Is it truly just that demand for Crestron is really off the charts? 2. are other brands not being so picky about the components that they're sourcing?? if so, will we see hardware issues with them in the coming months/years? 3. I've heard some stories about increased DOA stuff with other brands (particularly Savant). can anyone confirm this? TIA! |
It's going to be an interesting Masters...
Atlona has a control platform that is easy and affordable and available.? Extron is nice but have shipping delays as well.? QSC now integrates control, so that is a thing.? But I would like to see a little more humility and admittance from Crestron about just how bad this is, and how bad it looks to customers, how some firms are actually hurting/in danger from this, and how folks are turning other brands, and those turnings will likely be permanent.? |
