Issues with Sonos & Crestron

I hate to sound like a broken record here but the chatter about the long-standing issue of Sonos control and program rebooting is not what¡¯s going on and it¡¯s diluting the thread. ?There is a brand new breaking issue that as far as I can tell just popped up within the last few days. ?I now have a handful of clients reporting similar issues along with my personal setup at home. ?Systems with multiple Sonos devices have inconsistent failures. ?Volume and transport controls are not restored via program restart and have had mixed reports of multiple hardware restarts eventually working. ?In every case the favorites and now playing images are no longer populating. ?All of the problems in our case are running S2. ?I was fine with putting Sonos control in it¡¯s own program slot and restarting it...that solution, albeit a little lame, makes the control pretty stable. ?BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT IS GOING ON CURRENTLY.

Interestingly, I'm at a site with (2) PORTs (S2-12.1) and a CP3/TSWx60 setup, and 'So Far' no problems!?
I'm running CP3 PUF v1.601.0050
I have disabled all the ENABLEFEATURE items, including HYDROGENENABLE

My Friend is running a couple CONNECTs at his house with a CP3 set to the same FW, etc. and he's having issues... So Weird!!

This is exactly the same as I¡¯m seeing, intermittent volume control (not using the media player, vol+/vol-/mute is all I care about).
Rebooting the processor may or may not fix it, there doesn't appear to be any pattern.?

Also have been seeing API errors in debugger when the Sonos debugging is enabled.......

Ok, now I have one site that has completely failed.? Reboot does not bring it back any more.? Have no idea what has changed except for this, on this site, I tried uploading a new program setup with the nice idea of putting Sonos in the program 2 slot.? But, as soon as I uploaded the Sonos program, the controller (AV3) would load it and then restart it over and over again.? I pulled up the old program and made a quick change, compiled it and uploaded it to the system.? The darn thing started that reboot function again.? So I installed an older program that has not been compiled with this revision of Simpl and viola the reboot has stopped.? Now, the bummer is, the control is still not there.? I pulled up the text console and issued the errlog command and the AV3 thinks it is connected to the SONOS and ready to go.

Crestron is currently performing some final tests to confirm the suspected root cause, but we anticipate an announcement and proposed workaround may be posted some time next week.

ok everyone, just got done with a lengthy conversation with Crestron, they have acknowledged the problem and are "collecting data" (whatever that means).? they have encouraged all of us to contact them so that they have case numbers to back up the need for a solution.? Sooooooo, everyone start calling TB!!!

hey, on a more humorous note, all of my Crestron/Sonos communication errors have gone away LOL!!!

No need to inundate TB. ?I just spoke with Nicholas Northrup and he said
¡°Yes and it has been duplicated in Engineering and is top priority¡±
When I asked If they were on it. So looks like once there is a fix we may have o go around and update everyones Sonos modules again lol...I dont see how therewill be a solution without some sort of onsite visit.

Dave H-

This isn¡¯t directed to you personally but it¡¯s amazing how thoroughly and completely Crestron messed this whole Sonos integration up. ?I¡¯m pretty forgiving of the roller coaster that is sometimes Creston but this has been a mess since day 1. ?You guys went out of your way to tell everyone of the ground breaking partnership with Sonos by sending out emails and advertising on the website but it has LITERALLY NEVER WORKED RELIABLY. ?Patch after patch, upgrade after upgrade has never fixed it. ?I¡¯m really getting tired of eating crow with client after client trying to convince them that this will be the last time it breaks...the last time it will leave them hanging...the last time they will have to pay for a serivice call to fix this. ?Under normal circumstances this is a pain to deal with...but nowadays we are fighting for every job and every client and this Sonos nonsense isn¡¯t something we should have to be worrying about right now. ?You guys are partners according to Creston, ?these things are tested all the time to prevent surprises right? ?A team of people in both companies ¡°partnering¡± to ensure that things stay reliable and predictable right? ?Part of the Kool Aid we drink and the rhetoric we tell potential customers is that Crestron is ¡°better¡± and that its the ¡°most reliable¡±. ?We tell them that they don¡¯t ?want Control4 or Savant or RTI or Elan because Crestron is supposed to be the premier brand. ?Failures like this are one of the big reasons people don¡¯t come back to Crestron again. ?The system could otherwise be pefect but they¡¯ll never forget how we had to be back a dozen times to reset their processor or upgrade a module to make theri Sonos work.

The completely insane thing to me is the following:
Crestron is quite a large company when compared with Josh.ai.
Josh.ai can fully search several of the streaming services on Sonos. ?You can ask it to play virtually anything.
It can even ¡°voice cast¡± onto many Sonos devices.
Why can¡¯t Crestron do any of this?
I haven¡¯t heard anything breaking (yet) from Josh.
Why is Crestron constantly having problems?

Just curious,
Brian

Did you try rebooting your processor so see if the Sonos is rediscovered?

Sounds like a Cloud problem to me.? Why else would everyone start have issues.? That may be Crestron's fault or it may be a Sonos cloud service problem.? The Reboot issue sounds like a bug in the Sonos module where if it gets something unsuspected, the processor reboots -- its not the first time I have seen something like this.

So far none of my clients have called me but for the most part, we constructed our programs where is the Sonos module breaks, it the Sonos will continue to work.

Really Steve? ?You managed to keep the Sonos app working on the 60 series TP¡¯s? ?Sorry Mr. or Mrs. customer, you can no longer use that fancy WiFi remote we sold you for that room. ?For now on you will have to keep your phone or tablet with you in order to change the volume or select music. ?Oh and make sure that if you have anyone in the guest house to have them install the Sonos app on their devices because they won¡¯t be able to use that expensive touchpanel either. ?Not sure how to construct your program to avoid that. ?It only takes two minutes of reading to see that rebooting the program doesn¡¯t fix the issue at hand.

In this case it definitely seems to be a Sonos issue...a change they made to break the integration. ?My point is that if there was a real partnership involved that these updates would be tested and prepared for in advance.

LOL Steve, you really need to get a job on network news.

1. ?As you know the 60 series and their old apparently non updatable version of Android are trapped on the S1 app forever. ?Many clients updated to these units SPECIFICALLY for that feature. ?Its ok though because in a pinch you always had the SIMPL module for basic functionality...but oh wait that doesn¡¯t work either. ?Have you ever had to tell a client NOT to buy something like a Sonos Move because it will break their very expensive Crestron system? ?I have. ?Then try to explain why? ?I have.

2. ?¡°Did you try rebooting your processor so see if the Sonos is rediscovered?¡± ?

? ? ?¡°And I didn't ask if rebooting the processor fixed the issue.? I ask if rebooting the processor broke it¡±

LOL...no you didn¡¯t.

3. ?Crestron ¡°Certified¡± drivers used to be A LOT better than they are now. (Is that even still a thing btw?) ?It was a pretty good bet that for the most part they did what they were supposed to do. ?¡°
I have never seen a Crestron certified module that has completely worked right.? There is always some type of bug with them.? Most I land up rewriting myself.¡± ?Really Steve? ?That¡¯s your rebuttal?

4. ?You are apparently and conveniently forgetting the big marketing push Crestron had. ?The home page of their website, the pretty printed literature, the email campaign...all of which was extolling the virtues of the new partnership with Sonos and how wonderful everyone¡¯s lives were going to be because of it. ?The reps were handing out multi page glossy propaganda by the hundreds. ?You obviously weren¡¯t at that Crestron summit where they had people from Sonos get up on stage and tell the 1000 or so people in attendance how thrilled they were with the new partnership. ?And you definitely weren¡¯t at the dinner table of that very same event where several big dog Crestron employees and the Sonos folk were drinking beers and patting each other on the backs for such a momentous collaborative effort to get the ¡®tight¡¯ integration everyone was hoping for. ?So whether or not you choose to believe it does not change the facts.

5. ?Simply being contrary despite being informed of the very real situation people are facing is not a ¡°different perspective¡±
Its argumentative, a little insulting and just a plain waste of time. ?I¡¯m also not just a ¡°cranky programmer¡±. ?Nor did I make a personal swipe at you. ?I am also a salesperson, an installer and business owner responsible for quite a few paychecks. ?Having issues like this is bad for business on every front. ?Especially when you can just buy a $50 smart whatever and control your doohickeys and thingamabobs with a free app. ?Crestron HAS to be better. ?Next time get your facts straight and bring something legitimate to the conversation next time.

I am not going to respond further to you Steve. ?I would like for this thread to continue to be for the topic of the OP. ?Sonos is broken again...in a new and refreshing way.

Well, i guess somebody has just missed to announce the divorce¡

If you search for Crestron on the Sonos website, you get exactly one result (listing a couple of HEX codes for integration).

If worked 25+ in IT. ?It is very obvious that the times of upfront information before changes take place have long been gone. Including testing.

It?s the same with all the fancy software developing companies: they just throw out upates and new features because users love it.

It?s always the same: service gets a change (you get an info about it a day before if works well, but most of the time you or your user will have to find out yourself), then you have a couple of buys days to adapt for the change.

?

I?m totally with you: my expectation for this partnership were very high and it?s not like advertised. Even running the native app on touchscreens wasn?t what i?d call ?integration¡°. And the modules just support a fraction of the functionality.

Now i try to avoid Sonos wherever i can. I?d even talk a customer out of Sonos if possible.

?

Cheers, Thorsten

Steve is clearly a troll and as such we shouldn¡¯t feed it. I think though from your point 5, you¡¯ve already come to the same conclusion.

As for your take on Crestron¡¯s Sonos promise - I concur entirely. After Crestron killed off their own streaming solution (NSP) Sonos effectively became the new ¡°official¡± solution to streaming music services within a Crestron system. Crestron need to make this work, and only a troll would try to defend them - particularly with the victim blaming line of ¡®well only a fool would expect Crestron drivers to work in the first place¡¯.

My apologies to AVMaster.? I should have just let his comments slide off my back.? I am sure he is in a tough position.? Let us only hope Crestron fixes the problem.

For me, I have been burnt several times with Crestron/Sonos integration where I no longer design my systems to rely? on it.

Hello group. Does anybody know if the same behavior exists on a 4 series?

Well, I decided to try and revert to S1 and factory defaulted everything, only to find out that wasn't possible.? So I set everything backup with S2 and now everything's working normal again.? I had to manually add back my favorites and they all showed up immediately on my TSW panel.

The secret to reverting back to S1 is to download the S1 app and log in to you or your customers account.? We keep and old Connect handy at the shop and use it to add to the accoumt under S1...it will then have all of the favorites and streaming services.? Next step is to default all the S2 stuff and add it to the S1 account...then once up and running we remove the shop Connect and viola.? I believe the Arc, Move and latest Sub MUST be S2 tho so watch out for that.??
