HBO max won¡¯t exit on apple tv #crestron

First off I¡¯m not a programmer, I¡¯m an IT tech overseeing a jog done by Crestron programmers. We current can¡¯t get out of the HBO max app on Apple TV with the Crestron remote. The programmers tell me it¡¯s HBO max app. I¡¯ve been to a house where we can use the exit button to get to Home Screen. Client has newest remotes and I don¡¯t know how it¡¯s possible these programmers don¡¯t know how to program this remote to get to Home Screen. Any help here would be appreciated so I can show these programmers there is a way to program the remote or a button to get out of the HBO max app. All other apps exit to Home Screen on Apple TV with no issue. HBO max app is only app not capable of going to the Home Screen. Thank you for any advice.?

Enter the app by selecting a user on the screen. Then you can menu your way out. Stupid but that¡¯s what I¡¯ve noticed?

Or try long pressing the menu/home/whatever button.

Also¡if the button works correctly on every other app, what makes you think that it ¡®isn¡¯t¡¯ the app? ?It¡¯s not uncommon for ATV apps to act a little different from app to app. ?Fast forward, rewind etc are a little different depending on which service you are using. ?I¡¯m pretty sure that ¡®these programmers¡¯ aren¡¯t purposely leaving out the secret HBO exit command.

Agree with AVMaster!
I've seen a number of these kinds of issues with certain apps, sometimes related to mismatch of App and ATV software...??
i.e. App gets updated to compensate for ATV updates, then the ATV automatic updates don't automatically run and so there's an issue...
If only everyone would do what they were supposed to do...HaHa...

Fwiw, I always program the advanced IR driver restart command on some "off" button, like DVR on a TSR-310.? If all else fails, just hit that button and in 10 seconds it should be back up and running at the main menu.

Have tried the long press but doesn¡¯t work. I don¡¯t think it¡¯s app related because I was in a home recently that didn¡¯t have this issue. They homeowners don¡¯t know who the programming company was so no way to contact them on what they did. All the client had to do was press the ¡°exit¡± button and it would bring the system back to Home Screen instantly. Same Apple TV model. Same way of controlling. I¡¯m not bashing these programmers but every programmer from that company are no longer there so I¡¯m dealing with administration who wants to send new programmer out to house but no availability for over a month.?

Do you have the original AppleTV remote or an iPhone or iPad?? If yes to any of those, you should be able to control the AppleTV with them.? Can you exit the app with one of those?? Do you happen to know if the AppleTV is being controlled by IR or through an app talking to it over the network?? If IR, there should be a little IR emitter bug stuck on the front of the AppleTV.? Knowing how it's being controlled may shed some light on what's going on.

Also, you could just reboot the ATV. that will get you out of the 'Stuck' mode if that's the issue...
If it's controlled by IR, Then from the main UI, go to Settings and drill down a few levels in the menus, then P+H the Menu/Back button. if it jumps you back to the Main UI, then the P+H works and your issue is the HBO app (I sure it is anyway!...)
This unless they set the IR driver to pulse mode...

Just actually saw one of the programmers at the grocery store this weekend. He no longer works for the company along with a few others who worked on the job are now gone. He said that he believe the lead programmer set it up incorrectly and did mention something about pulse mode. I didn¡¯t understand what that meant but I¡¯m assuming that means it just sends a pulse to the IR and holding down any keep won¡¯t keep it held down for the IR. Again, I¡¯m just overseeing this as favor for homeowner because I programmed their last house with c4 working for another company. Now homeowner hired me as personal IT help for his multiple houses and offices from Florida to Martha¡¯s Vineyard. My only job is to make it easy as possible for him to work the system. Imagine a 4 year old with this tech, that¡¯s what I¡¯m dealing with.?

Client refuses to use 2 remotes. That¡¯s our current solution right now but he said he paid what he paid to use one remote and that¡¯s what he wants. Plus he loses the apple remote so when he does this I get a call at 10pm from him to walk him through opening remote app on his iPhone and exiting. Like I just mentioned, he¡¯s a 4 year old in technology intelligence?

I might add that the IR control for Enter has changed over the years.? I have had issues with the Enter key not working on some Apps after replacing the AppleTV with a newer AppleTV.? In those cases, I relearned the Enter button using the remote that came with the new AppleTV and that fixed the issue.

But I also have seen issues where the Enter key did not working on some Apps even with the original remote that came with the AppleTV.? In those cases, I had to wait for Apple or the maker of the App to come up with an update before the problem resolved itself.

Unfortunately, the new AppleTV remotes are BlueTooth so there is no learning those.

I suggest you take a collection of older AppleTV remotes that are IR base and try them on the client's AppleTV.? If you find one that works correctly, learn it and use it instead.? Also you might try a different AppleTV and see if it works properly.

You might also try one of the 3rd party AppleTV IP control modules and use that instead.? While I have never used one myself, a quick search shows Ultamation make one.? Here is the link to a demo version on Crestron's website.

I have plenty of the old remotes we can learn in. I am just trying to find a solution while we wait for the programmer company to set up an appointment that¡¯s not a month down the road. For the meantime, luckily Apple TV is local and he can use the 2 remote system but each time he gets frustrated. Very difficult client to deal with but I¡¯m determined to find a solution for him. I¡¯ll be back next week meeting with him while he¡¯s in town. He goes back and forth for his 2 houses (one c4 one Crestron) and the confusion got so bad we have printed laminated sheets on how to switch from cable to Apple TV and visa versa. Im determined to solve this on my own without a programmers support but by the looks of it we will need a programmer on site. He has 5 TVs all same model apple tv. Some local some in rack. Just a cluster to begin with and his intelligence with tech is very very low. But thanks for the link.?

thanks for all responses. I¡¯ve gotten further with this than the actual company doing the programming.?

Thanks for the ply Steve, but please avoid that link - the application market version is *ancient* and won¡¯t work with any of the newer ATVs.

if you want to try IP control on any vaguely recent (tvOS based) Apple TV, please use the Companion protocol version:?

All the best,
Oliver
