The "IR Extender" that comes with the Fire TV Cube is a TRANSMITTER for controlling other devices, not a receiver. Xbox or Windows Media Center IR codes work with the IR receiver Gary mentioned.

I believe that the IR was originally from the Microsoft Windows Media Center remote control. I can confirm that CEC does work very well as long as Amazon doesn't break it with an update.

I used one of these on a job a couple of months ago, and it worked well. It worked out of the box, with a standard Xbox driver from the database. I've since heard that CEC also works with the Crestron

Having a bunch of FireTV's, I can confirm that the remotes are BluTooth based.? Not sure if they also shoot out IR, but I doubt it.? Your best bet would be to test and try one of those IR to USB
