Charging accessory Battery

Question.? If my 12v accessory battery was dead, would it cause the car not to run?? I Know it sounds like a dumb question.? I know the 48v is what powers the electric motor.

Also other than putting on a external battery charger, how did folks back in 1977 charge the accessory battery?? The External port only charges the 48 volts on the batteries under my seat correct?? Think I would have know that by now.? The hood I cut into my car gives me quick access to the battery but in the old days they would have had to crawl under the dash.....

Thanks,

Mark

A dead accessory battery would stop my car. No matter how much charge my 48v pack has. I use a cheap onboard charger from harbor freight wired to it permanently. So far so good. I'm not sure how it was originally charged.?

Awesome.? I had a battery tender in our camper we just sold so I'm moving it to Sparky.

Thanks,

Mark

In the original Citicar, there was no accessory (12v) battery. They used part of the main pack to run 12v and 18v items.?
When they moved the batteries to the bumpers, a 12v accessory battery was installed. The charger did two jobs - the main pack 48v, and the accessory battery 12v.?
Common practice nowadays is to charge the 12v using a DC/DC converter off of the main pack. Easier to configure if you aren¡¯t using the original contactor 24/48 volt setup.?

So my 1977 citicar has a accessory battery under the hood.? It does not charge off of the main charger or is not hooked up that way.? I can hook up a trickle charger and plug that in separately to keep the battery topped off.? I'll look into the 12v dc/dc converter.? any ideas where I could source one?
Thanks again and sorry for the dumb questions.

Mark

Ebay has a good selection.? These are 48V to 12V at 20 amps:

I prefer having the accessory battery for times I have the headlights, fan or stereo on for extended periods, such as car cruises that will not effect my range at all. Like I might cover 35 miles but in 5hrs, rather than one.? A plus is that it also is not likely to fail when driving.?

On the against side, a converter is cheaper sometimes, lighter, and probably simpler, and less maintenance.?

So the inverter would replace the 12v battery under the hood?? Pretty easy to set up?? I like both ideas the pros and cons for the inverter.? I'll have to pursue it further.? Thanks,

Mark

But one thing - if you have a stock contactor setup, you¡¯ll probably want a 24 to 12 dcdc, connected to one half of the pack. This is because 48v is not always available, depending on the position of the series/parallel contactor.?
Make sure your dcdc is the isolated type before you buy.?

I've installed mine in the battery compartment. The output is attached where the 18V wire goes to the meter and accessories.
I also replaced the meter with a 48v version.

Update on my battery issue.? Got home after charging the battery all day with my shop like battery charger.? Took it off charge and put the key in and turn it to run.? Dash lights came on and then went dim.? Checked the battery with my battery checker I just got from harbor Freight and the battery is totally dead.? Well that makes sense why I was having do much trouble.?

My ignition key is spinning in the dash.? trying to tighten it up, but no luck as yet. Can that be replaces with a common ignition switch if need be?

Good to hear you are finding your problems. The ignition switch can be replaced with others. There is no main relay normally so get a switch that can take some amps. Mine is not stock I don't think as it has a start position and terminal that I have nothing run to.?

The key switch is just an on/off switch. ?Look for key switch spst. Replacing it is a simple job, but make sure you disconnect all power sources 12v and 18v) before removing the two wires, as they tend to come in contact with random parts once removed.?

You guys are awesome!!? I'll make sure to disconnect both power supplies as I've had Sparky spark before.? Thanks for the link to ebay.? Super helpful...

So I hooked up the new 12v Accessory battery and it made all the difference.? Adjusted the ignition key so it works great.? Turned it on and Click, Contactor sound.? Turned the switch to Forward and touched the gas and going backward.? Turn the switch to reverse and goes Forward.? Took it down the street and max speed about 10 mph.

Took the F/R contactor and on the side is 4 wires.? Two black and two are shades of white.? Switched to two white ones and forward goes forward and reverse goes reverse and I have full speed again..? Very happy and everything is working.

Thanks guys!

Mark

Great to hear!? 10mph is slow though. Are you getting the series/parallel contact switching at pedal position 3? Or the resistor bypass at position 2??

I had the two white-ish wires going to the contactors reversed so when I fixed that I hit 35 miles per hour within the first 200 feet.? The schematic shows a blue and orange wire and mine were both various shades of white.

Great!? I've found nearly every wire is a shade of white by now on mine as well.? Multimeter is a citicars best friend. Have fun driving!

The car would not run since all the relays are powered by12V.

My car came with the 48V charger under the passenger's seat and a Sears 12V battery charger under the driver's seat with a 12V battery behind it.?? Both chargers were tied into the charging port.

Happy motoring!
