You can send RADIO commands from the node or a BBS forwarding
script.
Can't you just leave the radio in USB-D?

This only applies if you are running a sound
card modem and a hardware TNC on the same radio.
If you only use VARA or other sound card modes
you just set Data mode modulation source to USB
and leave it there.
PTT_SETS_INPUT is used to switch modulation
source between AUX and USB if you have a Pactor
TNC attached to the AUX port.

If you are running a Sound Card Modem
using the internal soundcard and PACTOR
(or other TNC Modes) using the AUX
connector the input to the modulator has
to be changed depending on which is
transmitting. As the Soundcard TNC sends
PTT ON and PTT OFF commands to the
application, these can be used to switch
the input source. To enable this add
PTT_SETS_INPUT to the RIGCONTROL config,
eg
