Installing Ubuntu on my miniPC
开云体育
Boy! Am I going through a steep learning curve. I couldn't get any other type Linux to install and I had a mountain to climb to get Ubuntu to do it. Yipes! HP Prodesk G4.
At last, I have got dual boot working with Win 10. Now I am installing lots and lots of packages.....not sure how many I really need.
ChatGPT has really helped telling me what to do!

Emailing: First LRO PicoMuon detector weekly variation results 250525.png
I am very pleased with the results so far - however, request to the software programmers of the 2nd Raspberry Pi which creates the intranet page - is there any way that the daily, weekly and monthly plots can be saved for future perusal? For example, if in a few months, I look at a monthly plot and see a change then I will want to drill down to find out what happened by going back to the relevant weekly or daily plot, ideally without having to reinvent the wheel and write my own software to re-analyse the data?
Probably, also worth storing separate copy of the data on the 2nd Raspberry Pi plugged into the PicoMuon detector. Andy |

Andrew, ? I don't use any VLF receivers, all I do is connect a loop aerial (a 5m length of old SCART cable) to the microphone input of a PC and use that as the input to SpectrumLab. That way I can monitor many freqs. at once rather than use a single dedicated receiver. ? Transmitters often go off air or change frequency so it's easy in Spectrum lab to change the watch list when that happens. ? Mark |

开云体育Thanks Mark. ? Are you using the UKRAA VLF receivers? ? I am using one set at 23.4 KHz – are you doing the same? And if so how are you getting the output into Spectrum Lab? ? Mine is an old version with parallel port so I am taking the analogue output from the VLF receiver, putting it through a Labjack U3 and bringing it into Radio Sky Pipe II currently. ? Andy ? Andy, ? You set up a watch list for the plotter like this:- For each of the monitored freqs. in the 'Expression' I average over a bandwidth of 150Hz to try to cover the sidebands. ? My averaging over 60 FFTs amounts to about 5s. ? Mark ? ? |

Sent: 20 May 2025 23:33 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [baa-rag] SID monitoring recording on Radio Sky Pipe II ? Andy analogue filtering needs to be quite slow to remove that kind of noise. In the 2000s I was doing similar recording on 136kHz, and most of the noise was distant lightning. I chose to take 6 readings at 2
sec intervals and only save the lowest which became the reading for the mid point of the 6 readings. This was based on the idea that there may be gaps between the strikes. However ideally the filtering before digitisation should not be too narrow because that
will spread the width of the pulses. This is not usually provided as a filter so you may need to experiment with you receiver and software to use it. I found RSP only provided averaging which is not the best solution. On 20/05/2025 22:08, Andrew Thornett via groups.io wrote:

SID monitoring recording on Radio Sky Pipe II
开云体育Does anyone else use Radio Sky Pipe for recording output of UKRAA SID monitors? If so, how long an integration time do you use? I was using 5 seconds but still quite noisy. Should I use 10 secs or even 30 secs? ? Andy |
Re: Detecting Massive X-Class & M-Class flares on 14 May 2025 using Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance monitor at Lichfield Radio Observatory UK
开云体育Dear Mark, This is a bit embarrassing – I just looked back at my SID computer and I did wonder where this FFT settings came from – I use Radio Sky Pipe to record my data hence why I can’t find it! How do you use Spectrum Lab to record SID graphs? I have only every used it for 2D and 3D waterfalls for my meteor detection system. Andy ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>

开云体育I use an ancient version of SpectrumLab, but from what I see the latest version still has an 'FFT output internal average (#FFTs)' option in the 'FFT settings' window. ? The window is shown here: https://hamsci.org/spectrum-lab-solar-eclipse-instructions-page Don't use these values though! ? Mark |

Here's my plot at 23.4kHz.
I set spectrumlab to average over 60 FFTs to reduce the noise level, which seems to work well. Mark |

Re: PicoMuon Detector
Thanks Andy for the vote of confidence.? The UKRAA team are very pleased with this new detector; the result of a years development.? The Raspberry Pi data visualization software and the Pi web-server software is an on going development and will be added to with additional features.? If any one has muon data from any detector please send to John Cook for inclusion in the BAA RA Section monthly report.? Long term muon flux measurements will be particularly interesting.? If anyone wants to start a project to corelate lightening events with muon flux please have a go.? There are Universities exploring this and may be interested in your results.
?
The Pico muon detector will be demonstrated at EuCARA 25 () in September.? We would live to see you in person..!?
