U3A Zoom Course R09; Question on Hebrew Gematria (Numerology)
Hi Merlene, Thanks for your interesting observations. Perhaps you'd like some more things to ponder. What you'll see from these brief descriptions of the Hebrew meanings of numbers is how each number in Scripture is perfectly fit for purpose. All numbers in Scripture are significant, some more so than others. On one level, the Law of Moses specified certain ages for specific purposes. For example, no one could work in the tabernacle until age 30, except Kohenim (Levites) who could start a five-year training period at age 25 (Numbers 4:35; 8:24). Jesus’ ministry therefore started per the Mosaic age requirement. Three is the Hebrew gematria number of divine and heavenly perfection (e.g., Trinity). Fittingly, Jesus’ ministry during His First Coming was three years long. Twelve is the product of 3 and 4 (the earthly, the number of what is material and organic). It is a mathematically perfect number that signifies governmental perfection. It is found as a multiple in all gematria numbers that have to do with “rule”. Rabbinic literature regarded it as the threshold of adulthood. For many boys and girls, this was the age that their formal religious instruction ended. For some, this was the age where one began formal apprenticeship under a Rabbi. Interestingly, this was the age where Jesus demonstrated in the Temple the completeness of His learning. Ten is the number of ordinal perfection. Twenty is one short of twenty-one; if 21 is 3x7 (the Divine times spiritual perfection), then twenty signifies “one short”, or expectancy: the Bible has many examples of people waiting 20 years. Age 20 marked the transition to adulthood in the biblical period. This meant different things for boys and girls. Whereas the obligations taken on by a young man at bar mitzvah were public and visible, a young woman’s obligations were more private. This was the age that the taxation began for both men and women (Exodus 30:14, and conscription began for men (Numbers 1:3, 24). Thirty (three times ten) denotes in a higher degree the perfection of Divine Order and marks the moment Christ commenced His ministry.Something else to ponder, eh! What do we suppose he was doing in those first 30 years of his life? U3A Zoom Course R09, Session 1 of Term 3; When did Jesus know?
#john
Hi Jocelyn, To answer your question directly, the Bible doesn't state when Jesus knew that He was God or if, indeed, there was ever a time when He did not know it or was unaware of it. What is in the New Testament is that He was aware of it by the time that He was 12 years old in Jerusalem. What is also in the Bible is John 8:38, where the adult Jesus was fully knowledgeable about who He was: "Very truly I tell you, ... before Abraham was, I am!" Luke 2:40 addresses the child Jesus before the family went to Jerusalem, "And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him." Many take this to cover His life from infancy up to Age 12. Going further back in His life, numerous people at His birth and soon thereafter acknowledged Jesus as special even as the Archangel Gabriel has told Mary. So a good question would be, "when did Mary know that Jesus was the Son of God?" The biblical answer to that would be that she would have known even from before His birth. He was even named Immanuel ("God with us") in Hebrew. Why is this important? Jesus was raised in a very devout household. Luke 2:41-42 tells us that His family made pilgrimages to Jerusalem every year for the feasts of Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. In those days the mothers were responsible for the religious training of their children up to Age 12. Both parents were miraculously (Gabriel) aware of Jesus's status from His conception. He would naturally have had some very profound conversations with His parents when growing up. Okay, that's the New Testament, but is there something in the Old Testament as well? If you read Psalm 69, a well quoted Messianic Psalm in the New Testament, verses 5-16 are very interesting, because they can be taken as the cries of a devout child who doesn't fit in with others because he is different. Why is He different? Verse 9 answers, "Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up. And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me." This verse is actually quoted in this week's lesson on the Gospel of John. Verse 12 is very sad, but also fits. "Those who sit in the gate [the Elders] speak against me, And I am the song of the drunkards." Would this fit a young boy whom his village considered to be illegitimate, to be despised by both the high and the low? To tie all this rambling answer together, our study of the Gospel of John will reveal that the entire life of Jesus Christ played out according to a timeline established by the Father. Jesus was aware of the timeline and followed it to the letter. There is nothing to contradict the view that God's timeline has been from everlasting to everlasting. Thanks for an interesting question, Jocelyn. Do you have an opinion about how Jesus first understood Himself to be God incarnate ? The general opinion seems to be when He went with Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem and appeared to be lost on the way home. He was of course speaking to the great ones about things they had never heard before. Looking forward very much to your lecture tomorrow, God's blessings, Jocelyn Swanston

U3A Zoom Course R09, Session 1 of Term 3
2
Hi Ray, What a great way to start Term 3! I don’t know about others in the class, but this is what I took home: 1. By pointing out the relationship of John (So Who was John?) to others it had a profound effect on how I thought about how John, the disciples, his brothers, foster-brothers, and especially Jesus’ parents perceived Jesus in their day-to-day experiences with Him. When Jesus was 12 and left his parents to speak with the Priests in the Temple, Mary must have experienced the sobering thought that here was GOD, the WORD, in flesh. The same baby and young child she had reared, a human and yet GOD. As the disciples chatted to him daily, did they really appreciate that they were talking face-to-face to the Great GOD, the living WORD, not just a human prophet. It is something to really ponder about. 2. John reinforced this thought in his Gospel – trying to tell us plainly that HE really was GOD “See His Godship” – every day He walked on earth, it was GOD walking so close to them day by day. What an experience! 3. The manner in which you explained the Tenses in different languages certainly adds more to how powerful the Bible was, is, and always will be. In learning Spanish I gained valuable insights into different tenses – many beyond the usual 3 – past, present and future. We use more than those in our current daily English language, but don’t consciously think about what tense we are expressing at the time. You explained the impact of tenses beautifully on Wednesday. A lot to ponder on last lesson .... Thank you, Ray. Blessings, Merlene
