AA Files in the RCM Drop Box 6
Per Jack's EXCELLENT suggestion, I placed the aadocs.zip file in the RCM (Rec Crafts Metalworking) dropbox. http://www.metalworking.com/dropbox/ That way anyone that wants them that I haven't sent them to can grab them at their leisure, and save some on-line time on my end. If you've never been to this site there are other useful files there as well. Thanks again Jack. help with ID 4
I recently acquired a very old lathe which the previous owner said was an Atlas. However I am not so sure. There are several layers of old paint flaking off and I cannot find any markings anywhere on the lathe, no name tag, no model #, no serial #. The lathe is approximately 11" x 28". The cover over the change gears just hangs on - it is not bolted or hinged. The reversing gears are shifted with a small lever that tension is applied to by means of a 'spur' wheel. The ways are flat inside which the tailstock rides on and prismatic outside which the carriage rides on. The spindle is threaded for 1?" - 12 which is apparently unusual. This lathe needs a lot of work but I would like to know what I have. Any help identifying the manufacturer and/or model would be greatly appreciated. Intoduction 3
Hi Folks, My name is Steve Blancard. I have a great old 12 x 24 Atlas bench lathe, it is the old style with change gears. I've had it for about 14 years and have made many things with it over the years. It has a milling attachment that I used quite a few times before I bought a bench top milling machine. Ron Thibault told me about this e-group. If you haven't been to his Atlas Lathe web site, take a look. He has a lot of good info. For everyones info - I was just looking atwww.ebay.com and saw there is some Atlas stuff available. 2 different manuals and a set of change gears. Take a look, search under "lathe" or "atlas lathe" you'll be amazed at what is up for auction. Someone was asking about lathe tables/mountings. Mine is mounted on a 2" thick oak base that is supported by heavy cast iron legs. I think it is the original base since it looks as old as the lathe (60+ years) and appears factory made for it. I look forward to hearing what everyone else is doing with their lathes. Everybody does know...right?
I can't remember if I read it in an earlier post or not. But there is a very useful "official" Atlas web site (by Clausing) that has a lot mog good info on these old machines. Take a look: http://www.atlas-press.com/ Look under the heading of "Atlas oldies but goodies". If everyone already knows this then I'll take 12 lashes with a wet noodle. If not, don't say I never told ya. And this time when I told you about a web site I remembed to give the actual address. See, you can teach an old dog new tricks! PROVENANCE 2
This is a re-send Itried posting on the website but don't know IF . . . To the Atlas/Craftsman Group; Question & Info: Am I in the right group? I hear Atlas/Craftsman/AA mentioned as Origins for the Atlas. I have info which may or may not be of use to members, because my provenance (origin)is from Atlas Press Co. of Kalamazoo MI. My Lathe Nametag reads: Atlas Clausing Corp. Kalamazoo, Mich. 95001 and my Serial tag reads mod. # 3950; Ser. # 00074 The Atlas I have was made around 1970 (I think). It's 6" throw and has a #2 Morse Taper. The spindle is threaded 1"-10thd. The company is kaput. Tip #1 A source of parts and manuals for MY atlas was; Clausing Industrial Inc. Service Center P.O. Box 877 Goshen, IN 46527-0877 (219)533-0403 I got an owner's manual from them, and they have many parts for my unit. They also have a website. Tip #2 Since I also cut wood on my lathe I have another source for chucks for that purpose. I use the Nova Scroll Chuck, which is excellent, but the thread inserts were not available locally. So I went direct to: Latalex Ltd. 65 The Concourse Henderson, Auckland New Zealand They provided one at local prices and at no cost in shipping. They too have a website. SO; if anyone wants to tell me I'm in the wrong club, or wishes more info e me. Atlas 1036 parts
I'm hoping to obtain drawings or a source for parts for a fairly old Atlas 1036 (has the open headstock with motor on an 'over-center' belt tightner and 5-step pully on countershaft). Ways, tailstock, and headstock seem to be in fairly good shape. The housing for the reversing mechanism (where nameplate is) is broken, the little 'spider' that engages the lead screw to reversing gears is missing, the mount for the tailstock end of the lead screw is missing, and the gear pack that carries the pinion (crank cross slide along ways) is missing. Does anyone have leads for these parts? Does anyone have drawings for them? I'd be very happy with photocopies! Atlas/Craftsman Dates
At 01:12 PM 1/22/99 -0600, you wrote: >Does anyone know how to tell the date of manufacture of an old Atlas? >Clausing says their is no telling by serial number. >Jim Irwin Maybe this information can be backed into by comparing serial numbers with approximate year of original acquisition, where known. The problem will of course be there are so few machines are left in the hands of the original owners or family members. I'm a typical case in that even though I am only the second owner my 10, I do not know its year of original purchase and it was rebedded before I acquired it and has no serial number. Table for my Milling Attachment - Update 2
I have an update for everyone about the question I asked about making a table for my milling attachment. This afternoon I finished making an adapter that fits onto the stub of the milling attachment and has a 1 1/2" 8 TPI thread on the other end to accept the standard face plate or one of the chucks. Now I have a good size (8" dia.) milling table to use. The adapter is 3.250" diameter with two locking screws with pins like the other Atlas/Craftsman design vise. I marked the outside surface every 30 degrees so I can swing the table (face plate) for alignment purposes using the scale on the milling attachment. Now I need to find a nice 3" or 4" mill vise that will work standing on end. Any suggestions? Thank you Bob Tonkins for your advice in this and for lending me the threading gauge. If anyone is interested in a copy of the plan for this adapter, just let me know and I will fax it to you. John D.L. Johnson CSU, Chico jjohnson@... John D.L.
