countershaft bearings

Keep in mind and not use roller bearings they can not handle high rpm's, a ball bearing is to be used?

Unfortunately, the domestic manufacturers have nearly all gone to off shore sources for these p/n bearings and the result has been greatly increased costs (vs. my sourcing in 2016 at $4.00 - $6.++ each) and extremely unsatisfactory service life due to a revised method of construction. There is a very informative and detailed discussion thread including many other manufacturer brand cross referenced part nos. (with no assurances these are as original in design) on TheFordBarn.com site under General Discussion >Model A (1928-31) 'Transmission Bearings'. It seems the only way to get the good, original Ford designed bearings is to get Ford branded AND boxed (not loose) New Old Stock units, likely on Ebay, if they still exist! The design detail that identifies the original quality units is to look at the end retainer plates for through holes at the ends of the roller elements where the rollers have axle projections that? ride in these holes.

Good luck in your search.

What kind of miles per gallon you get with the Model T parts installed?

Just measure the existing bearings and then search McMaster and Grainger for a good part number. ?Then try Amazon.?
I would refrain from modifying the housing, since replacement parts are not available. You can always make your own custom shaft to fit your new bearings.?

No need to turn it down, just find a bearing that fits its current diameter and machine the housing to fit the o.d.

If I win the lottery, I want to visit the UK and get copies of all the model engineering books and magazines...

:)

Then buy a mall, and turn it into a maker space back here.?

There is a joke about a guy who wants to win the lottery, a good church-going man. He's been praying to win so he can do good things for his church. This particular night he's been praying for hours and hours, and crying out. "Oh, why won't you let me win the lottery?"

Then he hears a great booming voice say "Joe,? buy a ticket!"

Well, the casters that go under toolboxes and such are designed for slow, occasional movement, but for heavy loads.?

I am not sure they would serve well as a small load, constant movement bearing. Of course,? I could be wrong.

With a little help you should be able to build a new countershaft. Which, of course, would be easier if you have access to a second lathe. I get the impression that model engineers are pretty common there, though that could just be my selection of reading material...

Would it be reasonable to ask of local acquaintances if someone? could make a new modified countershaft for you? Or are you the only person you know with a lathe??

That's why I suggested OP call Clausing. They will know what the OEM part numbers are. Though since he lives in the UK, Tony might know at lathes.co.uk there have been a couple of authorized copies.

Once you have part numbers you can order from anyone, anywhere. I am sure they have bearing shops in the UK. I was able to find such places in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Germany when I was in those countries.?

I wouldn't be surprised to find the correct bearings are obsolete. But there should be cross-reference charts that will help you find the the new versions.??

You're in the UK , so this should be familiar to you: https://www.lathes.co.uk/atlas/page12.html

It mentions that the Craftsman lathes (also made by Atlas) used oilite bearings rather that the cage bearing. Might find some parts info if you talk to Tony

Another option is to modify it to take a readily available bearing as seen here:
