Tangential Topic


 

This may or may not have anything to do with Atlas/Craftsman, but might give you an idea if you run into a similar problem. I have a Delta 1" belt sander that uses plastic wheels. Some of the wheels are covered with a rubber tire. Anyway, the price for replacement wheels are pretty salty -like 10x more than I paid for the machine. Unable to bring myself to make such a purchase, I got the idea of gluing up a couple of PVC fittings I had laying around and turning it down on my lathe. Turning PVC is not hard, but is a little weird. Here is what I came up with in the end. Maybe someone else can use this idea for some other obscure or expensive part.

FYI: I think I had about a .003-.004 interference fit on the bearing. I figured plastic was forgiving enough to ballpark it.
