Tangential Topic

This may or may not have anything to do with Atlas/Craftsman, but might give you an idea if you run into a similar problem. I have a Delta 1" belt sander that uses plastic wheels. Some of the wheels are covered with a rubber tire. Anyway, the price for replacement wheels are pretty salty -like 10x more than I paid for the machine. Unable to bring myself to make such a purchase, I got the idea of gluing up a couple of PVC fittings I had laying around and turning it down on my lathe. Turning PVC is not hard, but is a little weird. Here is what I came up with in the end. Maybe someone else can use this idea for some other obscure or expensive part.

FYI: I think I had about a .003-.004 interference fit on the bearing. I figured plastic was forgiving enough to ballpark it.

I have a lawn tractor that needed an idler pulley.? The
originals were stamped steel with an integral ball race.? I
found plastic idler pulleys at McMaster-Carr for $18.? These
had flanges, but I turned the flanges off on my lathe, and
they worked fine.? Looked similar to the pic you sent.

I have used wheels from Grizzly for sander replacements. You could also turn new ones in aluminum. I have a sander I made in 1984 that I still use and has the original casted and turned wheels.

Casted??

The correct word is "cast" which is a transitive verb with no tense attached to it.

The one that really annoys me is the use of "lathed" rather than turned! "casted"is at least a logical mistake.? ?Grumpy Bill in Boulder.
