Hunting Facebook pages? (Not raccoons)

I'm looking for a volunteer or two, to help me hunt down Facebook pages.? (Hopefully a respite from hunting raccoons :-) )

I'm relatively new to this list (and the lunches), but I've known a few of the folk from many years back (Hi, Ed V!? Hi, David Bloom!).? I hope this sort of post is appropriate for the group -- if not, I trust that whatever passes for leadership :-) will let me know.

Specifically, I'm looking for someone to write a tiny bit of code (any language that will run on a Linux server) that calls the Facebook API, and tells me if any given (arbitrary) FB page exists (and is public) -- or not.? (No, curl-ing the page will not suffice, I've been down that road.? It has to be via the FB API.)

Why on earth would I want to do this (I hear you ask)?? Long story, stop/delete now if you're not interested.

Since the 2016 election ("a date that will?live in infamy"), I've been using my software architect skills to help build infrastructure for progressive and Democratic campaigns in Michigan.? (The anti-gerrymandering amendment of 2018 was one of our successes.)? I retired in 2024, and now I do this (volunteer) work full-time-ish.

One tiny piece is keeping the list of Democratic organizations (county parties, caucuses, clubs, districts, etc.) up-to-date.? Including (finally!)... if their Facebook page URLs are correct.

Anyone interested?? In this specific task, or the general idea of bringing the Michigan Dems into the 21st century?

Hi, all,

The past week, there have been a few times when we've heard noises like critters scrambling at the window, but didn't see any signs of them. They're very annoying noises. My son went outside, and said that from where he stood, it sounded like they were in the walls. Our house had a gambrel-style roof, and we are wondering if some critters may have found a way inside the lower eaves there. We aren't sure who to call to have someone check, and if they are there, remove and block whatever hole they found. (We haven't found a hole yet.)
?
No idea where to start with this! Boy, it's been a lot of house expenses recently. (FYI, the ongoing sewer problem turned out to be a workman that didn't do their job.)

Re: Possible vermin in the eaves, who to call?

Steven W. Cornell

Victor, I hope you are joking about relocating the racoons?? It is illegal to catch and relocate wild animals!? It's a $500 fine from the DNR.? It spreads diseases and the animals, unfamiliar with the new territory, will most likely die or be killed, As a homeowner you have only 2 options: hire an expensive critter company or trap & kill the animal yourself.? Eiter way the animal is killed.
?

Steven

Well, once a year we trap all the raccoons we can and put them in witness protection. They get a new identity and and a new home elsewhere.? A cheap Hav-a-heart trap, some cheap bread and the cheapest peanut butter will do.? ?No need to waste a lot of money on hiring someone to do what you can do in 5 minutes.
?
When we used to have a cat-door, they would come in the house.? Now, we don't but they can ransack the bird feeder, so they are always a big problem with no real predators.

The critter experts say it doesn't always work, but it worked for me with groundhogs and skunks. Spray household ammonia around the base of the whole house outside. We do it daily for a week, and heavily where there's evidence of the critter. Then we'll do it anytime the rain will have washed it away. NOTE: This can damage the plants in that area if you have a garden. Wishing you good luck!

Well, we found the hole where they got in. Evidently the vermin are only occasionally visiting, and haven't actually set up residence. I need that part of the roof repaired. Usually, roof repairs are for big chunks, and I have no clue what kind of person to hire for a small repair like this. I'm also concerned that they might have chewed on things inside the eaves.

Coons are very smart critters, and they can be vicious. I'll share a tip that an old farmer shared with me.

The critter dudes came and put traps out, and we now have dead squirrels on our roof waiting for the critter dudes to come back. Oof.

Hi PF,

We've used James Newbold (734) 276-9921 for small siding jobs, and he also does roofing. I would imagine that this is the type of work he could do, and he's a nice guy. I don't remember who recommended him to us, but it might have been Bobby Frank, who is a goldmine of good recommendations.

Thoughts? Advice?

Honestly, I don't know what I would do without this group. I have no clue.

THANK YOU in advance!?
