Re: action requested on Ann Arbor City Council review of streetlights
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Jennifer, Thanks for sharing this! I often struggle to generate a message to send to government representatives, so I'm sharing a generic copy of what I just sent to my councilmembers, with the hope that it might make it faster for others to write their own, given the time sensitivity. Katherine SUBJECT: Concern about LED Streetlight Conversion project BODY: Hello Councilmembers ___ and ___, I am a constituent in Ward ___, with an interest and concern about light pollution, which not only affects our ability to enjoy the night sky but also affects wildlife behavior, health, and movement. I am writing about the current efforts on the part of DTE to replace the streetlight bulbs with LED equivalents. It has come to my attention that the supplemental information recently provided by DTE is not accurate and is misleading, as it is comparing different measurement systems for lumens (specifically visible light vs. total spectrum light output). Fundamentally, the problem is that the proposed 58W LED replacements will be 300-400% brighter than the IES/ANSI national recommended standards for residential neighborhoods. These IES/ANSI standards are based on the brightness received on the ground, and these are the standards that Ann Arbor should work to meet. I encourage you to consider postponing any decisions on this matter until accurate information is available for evaluation and constituent voices are heard. Thank you for your time and consideration, __YOUR NAME___ YOUR STREET ADDRESS, Ward ___ J Dye wrote on 8/7/2024 10:37 AM:

action requested on Ann Arbor City Council review of streetlights
This came from Michigan Dark Skies. If you are concerned about addressing light pollution in Ann Arbor, you might take some of the proposed actions. Jennifer This Thursday, August 8 at 7pm, Ann Arbor City Council will again review the LED streetlight conversion project.? Thanks to your
feedback, they postponed the approval and asked staff to renegotiate
with DTE.? The materials were posted today, and show that their efforts
were unsuccessful.? Instead, DTE persuaded them that 58W LEDs are just
as bright as the existing 100W high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights.? This
is false and misleading.? The states:
This statement is false*.? Moreover, we
have field data that demonstrates that 58W LEDs are much brighter than
existing 100W HPS lights in Ann Arbor, and that the LEDs are 300-400%
brighter than the IES/ANSI national recommended standards in residential
neighborhoods.? DTE is manipulating the narrative to focus on lumens,
whereas the IES/ANSI standards are based on the brightness received on
the ground, i.e., footcandles (or lux).? The discussion needs to refocus
on getting Ann Arbor compliant with the ANSI standards.? These
standards are carefully developed by the lighting industry to consider
all uses, including pedestrians, bicycles, cars, etc.
We have 2 Action requests:
- Before the meeting this Thursday night:??we need people to?email the City Council?to again protest the existing plan.? Nothing has changed, except that DTE is misrepresenting the data: ?CityCouncil@...
If you know your Council reps, please also contact them individually --. - This Thursday, August 8, 7pm:???Is anyone interested in speaking up at the?session?at the start of the meeting?? You can do so by zoom or phone or in-person.? You?must call?734-794-6140?sign up in advance on the day of the meeting.? The item is?, but you don't have to stay for the Council discussion.? The?.? Instructions and call-in numbers are on.? You can also ask for the direct Zoom link. ??
Please let City Council know that you are watching
and that you still care about this.? The City should focus on enabling
an alternative plan.? Please express concern that nothing has changed
since July 15 and feel free to reuse any of the information below in
your email to Council.
Many thanks -- let's do it again!

output that includes non-visible light (IR and UV).? The comparison is
apples to oranges: ?would you read a book by the light of your 1000-W
toaster oven?? It outputs a LOT more lumens than your light bulb.?
Standard HPS to LED that a standard 100W HPS light should be replaced by a 30-ish W LED. ?
Also, shielding does not change the lumen
output, confirming that one can't compare values across columns in the
staff memo table. Jennifer Dye 734-709-8502 |

DPL librarian positions
While there are no librarian
positions posted on the website, I spoke with one of the directors
yesterday who said that HR is working hard to hire more librarians.
We're having a wave of retirements, including the assistant manager at
my branch. Packrat
that I am, I have saved copies of several postings, though possibly not
all levels. If you, or someone else, is interested, I'd be glad to
forward postings. And
I'll mention again the posting for Technical Training Associate and
Customer Service Representative (20 hour per week, entry level). I've griped about DPL, but no more than I have about previous positions I've held. Jennifer Jennifer Dye 734-709-8502 |
Backyard Concert this Friday 7/26
You are all invited to a backyard concert on Henry Street at the Packard
end, featuring Chloe Kimes. That block of Henry will be closed, and food trucks will be available for dinner and dessert. Bring your own chair and your beverage of choice. Suggested ticket price is $20/person -- proceeds go to the artist. Venmo @APlevek (or use the QR code on the poster). See attached poster for more info. (I have no association other than being a neighbor and wanting to support this sort of thing. Unfortunately, I will not be there, as I will be "working" at the Summer Beer Fest in Ypsilanti.) =Spencer |
