This came from Michigan Dark Skies. If you are concerned about addressing light pollution in Ann Arbor, you might take some of the proposed actions. Jennifer This Thursday, August 8 at 7pm, Ann Arbor City Council will again review the LED streetlight conversion project.? Thanks to your
feedback, they postponed the approval and asked staff to renegotiate
with DTE.? The materials were posted today, and show that their efforts
were unsuccessful.? Instead, DTE persuaded them that 58W LEDs are just
as bright as the existing 100W high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights.? This
is false and misleading.? The states:
This statement is false*.? Moreover, we
have field data that demonstrates that 58W LEDs are much brighter than
existing 100W HPS lights in Ann Arbor, and that the LEDs are 300-400%
brighter than the IES/ANSI national recommended standards in residential
neighborhoods.? DTE is manipulating the narrative to focus on lumens,
whereas the IES/ANSI standards are based on the brightness received on
the ground, i.e., footcandles (or lux).? The discussion needs to refocus
on getting Ann Arbor compliant with the ANSI standards.? These
standards are carefully developed by the lighting industry to consider
all uses, including pedestrians, bicycles, cars, etc.
We have 2 Action requests:
- Before the meeting this Thursday night:??we need people to?email the City Council?to again protest the existing plan.? Nothing has changed, except that DTE is misrepresenting the data: ?CityCouncil@...
If you know your Council reps, please also contact them individually --. - This Thursday, August 8, 7pm:???Is anyone interested in speaking up at the?session?at the start of the meeting?? You can do so by zoom or phone or in-person.? You?must call?734-794-6140?sign up in advance on the day of the meeting.? The item is?, but you don't have to stay for the Council discussion.? The?.? Instructions and call-in numbers are on.? You can also ask for the direct Zoom link. ??
Please let City Council know that you are watching
and that you still care about this.? The City should focus on enabling
an alternative plan.? Please express concern that nothing has changed
since July 15 and feel free to reuse any of the information below in
your email to Council.
Many thanks -- let's do it again!

output that includes non-visible light (IR and UV).? The comparison is
apples to oranges: ?would you read a book by the light of your 1000-W
toaster oven?? It outputs a LOT more lumens than your light bulb.?
Standard HPS to LED that a standard 100W HPS light should be replaced by a 30-ish W LED. ?
Also, shielding does not change the lumen
output, confirming that one can't compare values across columns in the
staff memo table. Jennifer Dye 734-709-8502 |
