Hi,

First, thank you for Superpatron.com. I love reading about
these great applications you've discovered and implemented
in the library. If only I had time to learn/do any myself...

Anyway, I'm writing to ask a favor, only if it is intriguing
and entirely convenient for you. From Superpatron and
Vacuum, you seem very handy at taking pictures and posting
them--and, well, you're in Ann Arbor.

If this graffito is anywhere near your regular travels,
would you mind taking a picture and posting it? I'm curious
to see it.

Ann Arbor doesn't have a big problem with graffiti
so imagine my
surprise to discover at 3 foot by 3 foot depository library
logo
painted to the side of the State Theater while cruising the
Art Fair this
morning.

Grace

Please don't go out of your way. But if it's convenient,
I'd love to see it. Thanks.

Take care,
Noa

Your name seems familiar; did you go to Marquette Senior

watch the midwest power market in real time

you can see the whole midwest power market on this map

with neatly color coded areas showing what (apparently) the
spot price of power is in each region.

blue map good, red map bad.

I haven't seen it at peak power times, but the rest of
that site is talking about emergency emergency alert
1 status for the midwest

A NERC Energy Emergency Alert 1 is possible if a control area's
forecasts (for a week or less) anticipate conditions where all
available resources, including imports, are committed to meet firm
load, firm transactions and reserve commitments, and there is concern
about sustaining required operating reserves when all possible
economic and discretionary actions, including curtailing nonfirm
wholesale energy sales are included in the forecasts.

levels go 1, 2, 3 where 2 is brownouts and 3 is blackouts.

thanks

Ed

A group of us met at University Cafe for lunch today:
* Yong-Mi Kim
* Katherine Lawrence
* Art Delano
* Mark Smith
* Kathy Brade

We discussed many things including:
* Katherine's NCSA project
* Citation software
* Browsers (IE, Netscape, Firefox)
* Mac software, including Photoshop and Graphic Converter

I assume we will be meeting next week at Eastern Accents.

Eastern Accents is still closed. I can't speak for everyone, but at least some of us are going to meet at University Cafe today.

Dehyping Skype / Fwd: Special Steve Whittaker Talk Aug. 1

12 noon
SI North (room to follow)

Dehyping Skype: on the future of the phone (and IM)

Steve Whittaker, U. of Sheffield, UK.

Voice over IP (VOIP) is a technology that has just reached maturity - in
particular with companies like Skype having more than 100 million users. In
this ethnographic study I look at the use of Skype in organisations. We find
(counterintuitively) that the commonly touted cost advantage of VOIP is largely
irrelevant in this setting. Instead we find that users combine VOIP with IM to
address some of the common problems with phone communication. This has strong
design implications for the future of the phone and IM and we conclude by
discussing these.

Art Fair is definitely in effect right there, unless there were big
changes this year. I used to work right next door to U Cafe. Then
again, is there anywhere "safe" from Art Fair?

I'm the newbie in this community so it might not be my place to ask, but is a location on S.

Art Delano is available for PHP contract work.
I also have a client who needs somebody to develop a web-based community/content
project. You would be working directly with their client rather than subcontracting, and
project managing as well as developing. This is out of my scope, unfortunately.

Initial research have been centered on Drupal, but the project is not committed to it (or to
PHP).

Anybody who's interested, get in touch with me, and I will refer.

I was glad to meet everybody last Thursday, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

A faculty member in an LSA department has a half-time system
administrator position that is not currently filled. We'd like to know
if any other unit on campus is looking to hire a half-time system
administrator and, if so, if you'd be interested in collaborating on a
search for a full-time person to share. We're hoping this will yield a
better pool of more highly-qualified candidates than we'd get if we
looked on our own for someone who only wanted to work half-time.

We're looking for someone at the "System Administrator Associate" or
"System Administrator Intermediate" level. On our end, Linux/Unix
server administration and desktop support skills are a must, HPC
cluster administration skills would be a huge bonus (the job involves
administering a 16 node Rocks cluster now, with additional clusters
likely to follow), and Microsoft Windows XP desktop support skills are
nice but not required. LSA will provide training on HPC cluster
administration and/or Windows XP for candidates who lack one or both of
these skills.

Please respond directly to me if your unit is interested in partnering
with an LSA unit to split a full time staff person with the above
qualifications.

Thanks.

Just an FYI for the group. I went to the new Korean/Japanese place at
Ellsworth and Hewitt in Ypsi (I forgot the name).
The Japanese is fair but the korean was excellent. I had BiBimBap which came
with a nice assortment of Kim Chi and for $0.45 was served hot in a stone bowl
(which I love).

Kinda far for a lunch, but in general a good place to eat.
