Thanks to everyone who came. the roster:
Dan Cooney, Mark Smith, Jose Nazario, John
Remmers, Mary Remmers, Larry Kestenbaum,
Daniel O'Neil, Catherine Juon, me, John
Blyberg, Steve Adams, Art Delano, Kathy Brade,
Nat Poor. 14 all told.

The conversational dynamics allowed for one
go-around the room, plus a little bit of everyone
connected to each other. Towards the end it
broke up into two groups, so I didn't get half
of what was going on.

The question I asked was if anyone knows anyone
looking for work or hiring. The results:

Arbor Networks is hiring security researchers and
threat analysts, contact Jose.

Sagient is said to be hiring, says Dan.

Catherine and Daniel hope to be hiring in 90 days.

Steve Adams is looking, w/experience in L2/L3
tech support.

Art Delano is available for PHP contract work.

Nat Poor is looking for a telecom analyst position
in New York City.

A few other people knew friends or relations who
were looking for work, but I'll make those connections
separately.

---

Inevitably people talked about Google. Much discussion
about what was actually going to happen, and the
fine semantics of how to describe the new place
("call center" didn't sound like the right description,
nor "research center"). More questions raised than
answered.

Catherine and Daniel from Pure Visibility were
more than a little bit happy that now there would
be a bunch more people in town who knew what
kind of work they did.

Dan is looking to fix his Dell laptop.

More of course, but you had to be there.

thanks

I'll post the details here, but just to get the word out -

Tomorrow (Thursday) at 2pm ET I'm going to host a conference
call to get a chance to talk to anyone who's available. The
topic of the call will be the Google announcement of a
new office in Ann Arbor, plus whatever else happens
to come up. I'm allowing an hour more or less for the
call.

If you're interested, write in for details of what the call-in
number will be and any other tech we have running
to go with it (chat session or whatever). Or if you want
discussion unmediated by phones I hope to see you
at lunch.

thanks

a2b3 for Thursday, July 13 2006: Google Ann Arbor office

There's never much of an agenda at the bi bim bop lunches,
but I thought I might go out on a limb and predict that
at least someone will have something to say about
Google coming to town.

No snarky comparisons about previous tech giants
Worldcom and Cisco opening (and then closing)
Ann Arbor offices.

See you at Eastern Accents tomorrow.

thanks

Ed

Please welcome Catherine Juon, Pure Visibility to the list

Please welcome Catherine Juon to the a2b3 group.

I've known Catherine since she was at West Pole,
where she was their Salesforce guru in residence.
These days she is one of the principals at Pure
Visibility, a search engine marketing firm in the
pineapple building on Depot.

Ann Arbor turns out to be a pretty good place to
be working on things that have to do with Google
Adwords.

I'm hoping she can make it Thursday, in any case welcome.

I asked a senior google person whether the nyt characterization of this as a
"research center" was a misnomer, and the answer was a very blunt yes.

Google to Put a Research Center in Michigan

By MICHELINE MAYNARD and NICK BUNKLEY

ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 10 ? Google plans to build an office and
research center here that will have up to 1,000 employees, people who
had been briefed on the plan said Monday night.

The announcement is set to be made Tuesday morning by Gov. Jennifer
M. Granholm at a news conference at the state Capitol in Lansing.

Google is expected to open the center in downtown Ann Arbor, the
hometown of the University of Michigan, where Larry Page, one of
Google's founders, earned his undergraduate degree in engineering.

Mr. Page, a Michigan native, has maintained close ties with the
university; his company is in the midst of a project to digitize all
seven million volumes in the university's libraries.

Google has been scouting the city for up to 240,000 square feet of
office space, according to a report last year in The Ann Arbor
Business Review. Ann Arbor was among a handful of potential cities
chosen from an initial list of 50, the report said.

Most of the space would be used for a technology and call center,
with about 40,000 square feet needed to house the library
digitization project, which has been hindered by court challenges
over copyrights.

The investment is a much-needed boost for Ms. Granholm, the state's
Democratic governor, who is in a tough re-election race. She was
criticized last month when Michigan did not actively compete for a
Honda plant that will be built in Indiana.

She has also been lobbying hard to have a Toyota engine plant opened
in the state, but a decision on that factory may not come until after
the November election, people participating in the discussions on
that factory said.

Michigan has lost nearly 300,000 jobs since 2000, and its jobless
rate has been higher than the national average for 57 consecutive
months. Southeast Michigan, where numerous auto plants have closed,
is trying to shed its Rust Belt image and market itself as a
technology hub known as Automation Alley in an effort to make up for
some job losses.

Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., has been on an investment
spree lately. It is spending $1.5 billion this year on operations
centers, including a large site in The Dalles, Ore., and on custom
technology.

Micheline Maynard reported from Ann Arbor, Mich., for this article
and Nick Bunkley from Detroit.
