worm screw, normal or excessive wear ?

Can anyone tell me if the right side of this worm screw is worn out or if that is the way its supposed to be ?

Im trying to refurbish a few atlas locos from the 70s and following the information on the main site, which has been very helpful.

This worm screw seems worn out, but its this way on the 3 locos so Iam not sure if that's the way its supposed to be, or if all 3 simply wore out more or less the same.

More reason I think it is worn out, in reverse it goes very smoothly but forwards it makes noise, the right side is the side that makes contact when going forward.

The right side also has a brass/copper washer + bushing?like on the left side, but not shown in the picture.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Nicolas,
?
That's normal. The ends are flat like that.
?
When you install the worms into the gear towers, put washers on either side of the worm to center it and keep it from moving back and forth too much. This will result in smoother performance. Also, move the worm bushings?up and down in the slots to get the mesh with the worm gear correct for quietest running. It's trial and error.

In my case, the right side isn't fully flat.
The left side has about 2mm of plastic before the screw starts, while the right side (seems) to be worn past the non-screw part straight to the screw. Because of this, the right side only has contact with the gear tower about 50% of the circle.

Is the worm screw (plastic) removable from the metal rod ?
I may try and shift around the placement to see if it is the right side thats the problem.

I guess what I should have said by normal is normal for Mehano and their spotty production and QA. I doubt that the worm is actually worn that much on the end instead of it just being molded imperfectly.
?
It still shouldn't really cause a problem, however, as long as the worm can rotate freely against the washer(s). What particular problem are you having?

Ah, I?didn't realize it could be that bad QA.

I have two locomotives that when going forward it makes a loud noise, when going in reverse they run very smoothly.
One locomotive has since started making noise both ways - but my focus is the one that goes backwards smoothly.

Ive isolated the motor, and the motor runs fine both directions, which makes me thing its the worm gear or the rest of the motion.
Been following the website tips on what to check and maintain.

Might put on a listing a N Scale Yard Sale after you join up. It's found on Yahoo. Someone might have a loco that's not running and/or parts you might need to get your back to running shape. Ocassionally the C-Liners do appear of bid on E-Bay but i cant say for sure the parts for them do?
