Re: 4-6-2 parts

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the A1G group. Attached are the three pages of the Atlas service
manual for the Pacific (4-6-2). I guess I don't understand what you mean
by, "...the front 4 attaches to."

Anyway, I hope the manual will be of help. The pages are a little light
because they were copies when I received them. I'm sure they can be darkened
up with a graphics manipulation application.

Re: worm screw, normal or excessive wear ?

Might put on a listing a N Scale Yard Sale after you join up. It's found on Yahoo. Someone might have a loco that's not running and/or parts you might need to get your back to running shape. Ocassionally the C-Liners do appear of bid on E-Bay but i cant say for sure the parts for them do?

Can anyone tell me if the right side of this worm screw is worn out or if that is the way its supposed to be ?

Im trying to refurbish a few atlas locos from the 70s and following the information on the main site, which has been very helpful.
This worm screw seems worn out, but its this way on the 3 locos so Iam not sure if that's the way its supposed to be, or if all 3 simply wore out more or less the same.

More reason I think it is worn out, in reverse it goes very smoothly but forwards it makes noise, the right side is the side that makes contact when going forward.
The right side also has a brass/copper washer + bushing?like on the left side, but not shown in the picture.

Thanks for your help.

Nicolas

Re: worm screw, normal or excessive wear ?

Ah, I?didn't realize it could be that bad QA.

I have two locomotives that when going forward it makes a loud noise, when going in reverse they run very smoothly.
One locomotive has since started making noise both ways - but my focus is the one that goes backwards smoothly.

Ive isolated the motor, and the motor runs fine both directions, which makes me thing its the worm gear or the rest of the motion.
Been following the website tips on what to check and maintain.

I guess what I should have said by normal is normal for Mehano and their spotty production and QA. I doubt that the worm is actually worn that much on the end instead of it just being molded imperfectly.
?
It still shouldn't really cause a problem, however, as long as the worm can rotate freely against the washer(s). What particular problem are you having?

Re: worm screw, normal or excessive wear ?

In my case, the right side isn't fully flat.
The left side has about 2mm of plastic before the screw starts, while the right side (seems) to be worn past the non-screw part straight to the screw. Because of this, the right side only has contact with the gear tower about 50% of the circle.

Is the worm screw (plastic) removable from the metal rod ?
I may try and shift around the placement to see if it is the right side thats the problem.

Re: worm screw, normal or excessive wear ?

Hi Nicolas,
?
That's normal. The ends are flat like that.
?
When you install the worms into the gear towers, put washers on either side of the worm to center it and keep it from moving back and forth too much. This will result in smoother performance. Also, move the worm bushings?up and down in the slots to get the mesh with the worm gear correct for quietest running. It's trial and error.

E-R Models 'Route Rock' Bay Window Caboose (A1G Tooling)

Thanks to a listing on eBay, we're one step closer to describing all of the E-R Models Bay Window Cabooses that were produced using the A1G tooling.

Catalog Numbers 70107 and 70108 are 'Route Rock' cars, the last incarnation of the Rock Island.? They are white with black lettering and a large black and blue "R".?? Catalog 70107 is Road Number 17183.

All that's needed now is a description of the Union Pacific cabooses (Catalog Numbers 70101 and 70102) and we will have that information complete.? Ideally, I'd get images of all of the cars, but I think that's a long term project.

Cheers,
George (your list owner)

Auto Carrier

I never really cared for the Auto Carrier that Atlas offered, too me it was "very toy like" in looks. Found this 1960 photo of a Frisco Lines auto carrier, for the most part it fairly close to what Atlas had. The bottom floor does not drop down as far as the model but there is a drop. The other photo on this link is almost what Tyco had in HO.
