What Lies in the Heart. Mikayla/The Dragon

?- Mikayla -

Mikayla sighed and began to pace again. "That is what I mean, Angus. Do you have any idea how much tremendous pressure that is to put upon me? Me. Someone who has never done magic before ever in my life and now I am suddenly not only master it, but master it enough to be the savior to your master needs to save both you and he." She turned then, covering her face. "it just feels too much," She whispered.

"But I am supposed to trust the master. I do not even know the master. All I know is that when I am with him he soothes and calms me. And I do not know why. And now that he is not here my mind and world is in turmoil." She started pacing again. "What if I do something wrong? What if I mess up like before? What if I hurt him again? It is just too much," she said turning from him so that he did not see the tears that formed in her eyes.?A shuttered sigh left her then and she put her hands together clasped under her chin.?

With her back to him, she took a deep breath, wipe the tear from her eyes,?
before turning back to him. Moving she came to stand before the book. Nodding Mikayla squared her shoulders and opened it to the first page.?

(Angus, The Dragon)

"The Master soothes and calms you?" Angus said, sounding surprised.? "That's the first time I've ever heard someone say that.? Well, not the first," he amended. "But certainly the first in a very, very long time."

"Please do not distress yourself unnecessarily, mistress," the servant went on.? "The Master does not expect miracles.? Well, he does admittedly _hope_ for them.? But he does not expect them.? And I'm certain he does not expect you to master trans-species bodily transformation spells on your first outing."? He winced slightly.? "What happened before was simply an unfortunate accident.? The book happened to be opened to the wrong page."

"Perhaps if you start with something simple," Angus suggested.? "Like, say, lighting a candle.? Or turning water into wine.? Or perhaps reading magic?"? He nodded to himself at the thought.? "That might make things a lot easier for you, if you knew what the spell was for before trying to read it."

“Aye... he does. I understand his gruffness.” She said absentmindedly as she read over one of the pages in the tomb. “He wand me to be able to conjure tea. I didn’t even think he drank tea.” She said reading.?

And it was almost as if the minute she began to read, she was drawn in. The world of magic inside the book calling to her. Leading her towards something bigger than herself...and so she followed it. Unsure what she would find.

(Angus, The Dragon)

"The Master is fond of tea," Angus admitted, nodding his head. "But it's frustrating for him now. The cups are far too small and delicate, and cannot hold more than what amounts to a single sip in his current size. And he finds drinking from a bowl undignified. Still..." he mused "... it is a fairly simple spell. It might be a good one to start with."

The seemed to shimmer a bit as Mikayla read, the words shifting about on the page, forming symbols that suddenly began to make sense to the young woman. Words formed on her lips and tongue, causing them to tingle as she spoke them.? A feeling of power came over her, flowing from the symbols on the page into her fingers as she moved them from line to line. And the words she spoke into the air took on color and substance, swirling in an incandescent cloud that she found she could manipulate and cause to move in whatever direction she cast her gaze.

"Excellent, mistress," Angus said, unable to mask his excitement.? "Now, try to make your conjuration take form. Just focus on what you want it to be.? If the spell is properly bound to your will, it will respond.? Something simple would be best." ?

Back in his chamber, the Dragon remained asleep, but even in his slumber he could feel the working of magic emanating from the other part of the keep.? It was familiar, and yet different somehow. The working of something he himself had done but by someone whose technique was new to him.? "Yes," he murmured, a wisp of smoke trailing from his nostrils. "Let the work guide you..."

?- Mikayla -

Mikayla concentrated. Her mind hearing Angus but she was so focused she did not respond. However, she did feel the words of praise...encouragement moving through her spirit pushing her forward.?

She saw vivid color and felt keenly everything she was doing. She had one task. She had no intention of stopping until that task was completely. In fact, Mikayla was so focus on her task, she stood at the books for hours. Ignoring natural bodily necessities such as food or sleep and everything else.?

She didn’t know if Angus had stayed the whole time or if her had come and gone. She has no concept of seconds...minutes or hours...only the work...

Several hours laters. She stopped. Drained...looking up from the book she looked at the table and frowned. No tea cup. Nothing. Feeling dejected, Mikayla felt extremely tired. Moving to the tiny cot within the room, Mikayla has just enough energy to strip off her dress to her chemist before exhaustion took her under.?

Mikayla had no idea that down within the kitchen, appearing on the table was a mug, and fork/spoon combination large enough for The Dragon to take tea and eat in the civilized manner she saw that he wanted to.

"Mistress Mikayla?" Angus said softly, wanting to wake her but not startle her.? When her eyes flickered open, the man bowed then set the tray he was carrying on the nearby table.? "I didn't want to wake you, but I thought you might be getting hungry about now.? It's mid-morning." He smiled as he began uncovering some dishes on the tray, letting the aroma of freshly cooked eggs, sausage and toast fill the air.

"You apparently had quite an exhausting day," he went on, opening small jars of honey and jam and setting them to the side.? "Which you may be surprised to learn was the day before yesterday.? You were quite dead to the world all day yesterday.? The Master said to let you rest, however, and not to wake you.? But seeing as how it's a new day already, I thought I would take a chance and see if you were recovered. And, as I said, to see if you were hungry."

When all was ready, Angus bowed again and retreated to the door respectfully.? His manner had always been deferential, but today it seemed particularly so.? "If you are feeling up to it," he said, pausing in the doorway, "the Master would very much like to have you join him for tea this afternoon.? I believe he wishes to... to discuss your rather remarkable progress."? The man looked like he wanted to say more but his tongue was held by discretion. "If you need anything, just call out and I will come."? With that, he bowed a final time and withdrew from the room, closing the door behind him. ?

- Mikayla

Mikayla slowly began to come alive at the soft call from the man at her bedside. Taking her longer to rise from her slumber than normal, She blinked and stretched. She still felt exhausted but not as tired as she did the day before. ?Sitting up, she blinked a few more times, her eyes firmly on Angus’s mouth. Still so tired, it took quite a bit her to comprehend what he was saying. ?She caught bits and pieces...but rather than ask him to repeat himself she simply nodded and said “Thank you Angus.”

After he left,?Mikayla fell back to the bed. She sighed. She did catch the master was awake. He would be disappointed no doubt at the fact that yesterday was a disaster...not not yesterday...the day before yesterday. Not only had she failed, she slept for a full day. She wanted to bury her head back under the covers.?Instead she sat up and rose. Moving to the pedestal the book had been.

It was gone.?

Again she sighed. She supposed he found her failure meant that she didn’t deserve the book. That made sense. Moving back to her bed, Mikayla suddenly wasn’t very hungry any more.?Laying down, she nodded off again. Retreating into sleep to escape her own disappointment.

A few hours later, she awoke. She stretched and washed. Of course Angus had come to retrieve the tray. She dressed in a deep blue dress Puffy capped sleeved dress which gathered underneath her bust and blue matching slippers. Slowly she walked to the doors of the great hall. Taking a deep breathe, preparing for the dressing down she knew he would give, ?she came inside.?

“Good Afternoon, my lord. Angus said you wished me to...join...you for...tea.” She said her words halting as she saw the items before him. A extra large tea cup and spoon.

(Angus, The Dragon)

"Yes," The Dragon replied.? "Thank you for joining me."? He gestured to a nearby chair, elaborately carved and upholstered with fine needle work.? As if at a signal, Angus came in with a tray, carrying a human-sized tea set. Taking a place next to the chair, he waited for Mikayla to sit so that he could serve her.

"I apologize for the mismatch in our respective services," The Dragon said, taking up the enormous cup before him along with the matching spoon. Judging by the sounds being made when he began stirring it, the tea in the cup amounted to gallons.? "But we did not have time in which to make a matching set.? Particularly considering how elaborate and artful these new ones are." He nodded his great head to indicate the cup and spoon in his talons, both of which he was holding comfortably and both of which were adorned with intricate colorful designs.? "Ones _you_ created," he added, eying her meaningfully as he took a sip.

"I must also apologize for having the book removed." The Dragon was noticeably more recovered, his scales having regained much of their luster since the last time she had seen him.? "Given how your initial efforts left you so exhausted, I was concerned about what might happen if you were to attempt another spell too soon.? I will have Angus bring it back to you as soon as we are done."

"_Are_ you feeling better, mistress?" The Dragon asked, actually sounding solicitous instead of demanding.? It was not easy to read his reptilian face, even now, but it seemed slightly softer, more... human... somehow.

Mikayla?

Mikayla didn’t speak...she couldn’t speak. Was he telling her...”I made those?” She said looking to the tea cup. Surprise awe and confusion filled her tone. “I made those?” She repeated as she stared at the tea cup. Was he being honest? Of course he was being honest he wouldn’t have said it if he wasn’t.?

“I made those,” she said squealing in delight. She clapped her hands together a big smile on her face. “I made those. I wasn’t sure. I thought I failed...but I made those.” She said giggling. Before she knew it she was up hugging him. Throwing her arms around his neck. “I made those! I didn’t fail!”

(Angus, The Dragon)

The Dragon blinked at Mikayla's reaction. He had assumed that she'd be pleased, but... giggling?? He was even less prepared when the young woman suddenly threw her arms around his neck and started hugging him.

"Stop... stop that!" he protested. With difficulty he managed to set his cup and spoon down, then carefully disentangled her arms from around his neck.? "That was quite uncalled for," he growled, fixing her with what he hoped was his most disapproving glare.? "I... I could still eat you, you know."

When he felt he'd recovered some of his dignity, he picked up the cup and spoon again and resumed stirring his tea.? "Yes, you made these.? Entirely on your own, using the affinity for magic that exists within you." He paused to examine the detailed decoration that adorned both objects.? "And did an exceptional job of it.? I was just hoping for something that wouldn't leak or break, but this..." he held the cup to his mouth and took a long luxuriating sip "...this was far more than that. So..." his reptilian features scrunched up into a begrudging aspect? "...well done."

Mikayla let him go as he pushed her away. But she was still just as bouncy and giggly as before. When he said he could eat her she swallowed a laugh but stood ramrod straight. “Of course.” She said turning to sit back down. She winked at Angus as she did.

Returning to her seat. She listened to him as he spoke. “I am so glad you approve. I just wanted you to be able to enjoy tea again. I didnt think I had done anything right. I’m so glad it worked.”

She looked at him enjoying his tea. “So now what.”

Angus caught the wink that Mikayla sent his way, but quickly lowered his head so that the Dragon would not see him smile.? Instead, he cleared his throat and busied himself fixing a cup of tea which he brought to Mikayla, with whom he did share a discreet smile.

"It would seem that you've achieved the basics of conjuration," the Dragon said, once Mikayla had been served.? "Which was remarkable, considering it was your first real attempt.? The next logical step is to move on to transformation." He paused to drink some more tea from the cup she had produced with her magicks.? "Conjuration involves creating something from nothing," he went on, nodding at the cup in his talons.? "But transformation involves taking something that already exists and changing its basic nature.? It may sound simple, but in fact it is far more complex. Especially if you're attempting to transform a living thing, which has its own rules when it comes to magic."

"Angus has returned the book to its stand," he went on, setting his cup aside and turning his head to face Mikayla once again, "with the section on transformations open and marked.? He has also given you a stone block to practice with. When you are ready, see what you can make of it.? Until then, I fear I must rest some more.? I am much recovered, but I tire easily."? With that he motioned to Angus and the servant bowed and escorted her out of the room, carrying the tea tray with him.

"You've made an impression, mistress," he said softly once the door had closed behind him. "He's so polite, I hardly recognize him."

"Oh...of course," she said rising from her seat. "I am glad you like the tea set. Rest well." she said then turned and left her place at the table since he had effective dismissed her. Without another word, Mikayla walked out the door. She tried hard not frown, but she was shocked at just how quickly she was dismissed. She had wanted to get to know The Dragon more. To talk to him more, but it seemed like with him if he was not growling at her, he was dismissing her. She was lost in that thought went Angus spoke to her. "That is polite?" she said disbelieving.

"He dismissed me again. I thought we were getting to know each other and he just dismissed me and banished me to the magic room."

She sighed. "I am sorry Angus. I must sound like a terrible brat. it is not my intention." She said as she reached the room. "I just hoped that he and I would learned to become friends." she said "Like you and I are." As she opened the door. The book was on the stand again. Almost instantly it was like it called to her. And she was helpless to open the call. Without even noticing she moved to the stand. Taking her place before the book. Her fingers and eyes locking on the page.?

And soon she was entranced. Lost to the call of the spells on the page. Silently murmuring the words to herself. Watching as the stone before her jumped and fluttered. Nothing else matter now, but the book, the spell and the stone.?

"You'll have to forgive him, Mistress Mikayla," Angus said as he escorted her back to the study where the book was set up.? "He doesn't mean to dismiss you.? It's just... the Master was never very good at social interactions, even when he was human.? Being a dragon has only made it more difficult for him."? Lowering his voice, he added "The truth is, Mistress, he's afraid of running out of things to say.? Always has been. So it's easier for him if he just keeps conversations short." He smiled a bit as he added "But that doesn't mean _you_ have to, Mistress."

But truth be told, I have in your short time here come to admire you a bit.? You've shown great courage in being willing to stand up to the Master.? And you've given us hope." "If you need anything mistress, just give a shout and I'll most likely hear it."? As he turned to go, Angus hesitated, chewing on his lip as if mulling something over.? "And if you need a break from your studies," he said genially, "I'll fix a tray of tea and cakes for you.? You might enjoy them in the..." He stopped, looking like he wanted to say more but was being stopped somehow.? Looking exhausted by the effort, he bowed his head once again and ducked out of the study, leaving Mikayla to herself.?

His words were kind and she accepted them as such. “Thank you Angus.” She said. “If I need anything I will be sure to call.” She nodded her goodbyes to him and then began to read the book. Attempting to connect with a spell that would do what he asked her to do. Change one object to another.

However this time she was a bit more distracted and despite the pull of the book she could not concentrate. With a sigh, she blinked. Her mind going to The Dragon and all that Angus had said. She was giving them hope. Goodness she hoped not. She didn’t want to be anyone’s hope. That was a lot of pressure to live up too.?

She knew she was not going to be able to focus. At least not now. ?Closing the book, Mikayla left the study and began to explore the castle.

Evidently the keep had been set up to magically light the path of anyone moving through its halls, for each time Mikayla ventured into a stairwell or a hallway, magic torches set in iron sconces on the walls would suddenly come alight with mystical fire that illuminated the area.? The size of the place became daunting the more she explored, making her wonder if she was in danger of getting lost in the seeming labyrinth of the place. The feeling grew even more worrisome when she tried to retrace her steps and realized that the layout of what was now behind her did not match her memories of where she thought she had been.

As if responding to her worries, a small ball of light detached itself from a nearby torch and came to float in front of her, hovering in the middle of the hallway like a will-o-the-wisp.? It then began to move down the hallway, pausing every now and then as if to make sure she was following it.? As she did so, the torches behind her began to extinguish themselves, prompting her to keep moving forward.

Finally the wisp came to a stop at the end of a hall, not one that Mikayla could remember having been in before.? At first, it seemed to be a dead end, with only walls of stone before and around her.? But as the young woman watched, the wall in front of her began to shimmer and reshape itself, until finally a large door had manifested, a strong-looking structure of oaken beams bound in iron.? It lacked both handle and lock, but in the center of the door was a polished metal plaque with a single word inscribed on it:? Jerusha.? The wisp hovered near the plaque for a moment, then suddenly disappeared in a burst of sparkles that descended on her like a spring mist, each sparkle winking out as they touched her skin, until finally she was alone before the door with only the two torches in the side walls keeping the darkness at bay.

?

Slowly, Mikayla pushed the door open. She moved deeper into the room, looking around almost like a hesitant gazelle attempting to cross a clearing--a fact that would have no doubt surprised both Angus and The Master considering how bold her personality had been thus far

?

The currently rooms were set up much nicer than the one she had been in before (not that her other room was bad). However, this room held within a sitting room that was spacious and open, decorated with rich velvet sofas and lounge chairs with ornate table and chairs for eating.

?

Large majestic and regal armoires and dressers sat along walls within the middle of the room sat a grand four poster bed covered in silk and fur of the finest quality and opulent golds and reds, draped with a nearly see through curtains.

?

Beyond the bed was a double door with frosted glass that allowed her to see out onto the beautiful lush landscape of the moon-soaked countryside.? The night was dark. The glow of a large white moon poured into the window.? Basking the room with a warm golden glow. The scent of spring and flowers along with the grass and a multitude of other scents brushed past her nose

?

Along with the moon, the room was bathed with the warm glow of the light of flames, the candles cast severe shadows against the wall. The soft breeze through the slightly opened door lightly rustle the curls of her dark hair about her shoulders causing goosebumps to tickle her skin. However, the heat from the hearth ablazed caused a sharp contrast to the gentle wind...almost swallowing it completely.

?

Mikayla touched the soft sheers of the bed, of the balcony doors, letting the billowing fabric running through her fingers. She inhaled the smell of sulfur from burning candles, the soothing scent of frankincense incenses?rose to dance with the night air.?

?

Mikayla stopped when she saw the beautiful white gauze of a nearly sheer gown hanging from clips on the wall.? Her fingers danced over material. It was soft and she long to feel it against her skin. Without thinking, she quickly discard her gown, slipping the exotic material about her frame, tying the halter stings behind her neck. , Mikayla found herself rubbing her hands over her body, loving the feel of the material against her skin. It was so soft and buttery she couldn’t help but sigh as she felt wave upon wave of an unexplainable electric anticipation pass through her.

?

With eyes closed, Mikayla stood in the middle of the floor doing something incredibly uncharacteristic. She allowed her hands to roam about her body in a rather sensual way. The fabric felt divine, the tingles, the shudders, the emotion, the?feathery light?touch--what started off as her simply loving the feel of the silk upon her skin spiraled into a?timid, if not an earnest foray into self-gratification.

?

The lovely girl stood there before the fire blazed hearth, one?hand trailing up her?smooth arm to cross over her shoulder. Her delicate fingers caressing her neck, lowering to?dust the flesh of cleavage on the inhale as her palm?gently passed over?her?hardening areola. Her?breath hitch...

?

"Umm," she?moaned unaware the entrancing sound slipped passed her own?lips. The sound was pure rapture. Her body swayed to feel of the intoxicating pulse of her skin coming alive. Her form quivered to the frequency of wave upon wave of electricity passing over each and every nerve-ending. Her whole being quaked to?a silent unknown force driving her higher and higher threatened to take her over the edge.??

?

It was almost as if the breeze from the window for into unseen hands that join with her exploration of her body... as if soft gentle touches ran up and down her arms, her legs and whispers of touches slipping up her skirt against her skin. And surprisingly as she did this, her thought went to him. The Master of the Keep. Her mind wondering…could he touch her this way…feel her this way…

?

Mikayla had no idea that the glowing orb tucked into the corner of the room would reveal her every thoughts and wildest dreams to her.

(The Dragon, Angus)

The Dragon slept.? It was the first decent night's - was it night? - sleep that he'd had in days.? Or was it weeks?? Longer?? For once his dreams were untroubled.? The keep was untroubled.? A soothing calm seemed to be flowing from within, moving from chamber to chamber.? Flowing from... where?

A dream.? He was dreaming.? A door, a door that had been lost to his memory, had been opened.? And someone had gone through.? Someone... familiar?

She moved within the room, marveling at what she saw, reveling in the things she touched, spreading a sense of awe and wonder about her.? He knew her. Or had known her. He tried to see her face but it was hidden to him, like something glowing with its own inner light but moving to and fro behind a veil, visible but vague, yet so familiar.

He felt himself pulling loose from his body.? ?Not his body.? He looked down at the form of the dragon, slumbering and still, and then down at himself.? At his hands.? He had hands again?? And feet?? He touched his face and felt skin instead of scales and wondered at it.? Crossing the room, he stood before a mirror and gazed upon himself, but there was that same dreamlike vagueness.? Was it really himself?? Or just a dream of himself?? He had to know.

Half-remembered pathways led him through the keep, drawn by the feeling of familiarity, of some memory on the verge of rediscovery.? He stood before the door, saw the name on the metal plate, and entered.??

And she was there.? Or at least someone who felt like her.? Dressed in one of her gowns, moving about the room as if drinking in the experience, projecting raw sensuality.? He stared as he drew near, wanting desperately to see her face but the veil remained.? He touched her shoulder and whispered a hope.? "Jerusha?"

?

Mikayla did not think about what she was doing to her body. She was entranced by the scents and the breeze and the feel of her hands roaming her skin. Her only thought was more...

This felt so good and she only wanted to feel more. However, the touch to her shoulder startled her, brought her back to herself. She blinked. Embarrassment filling her face. She was touching herself…out in the open. And he…“Forgive me,” she said to the handsome man before her. “I do not know what came over me. I should not be in here, I will give you back your privacy,” she said keeping her head bowed, fighting the tears her embarrassment was producing.

?

She needed to get out of here now. She thought quickly stepping around him, quickly moving to the door.
