Hi Marjorie . Thanks for your email . The only Hannah I have was born 1776 in Golcar to parents Joseph and Mary Rawcliffe . I would think the WHITWORTH was a one off as you suggest .

?BTW? My Sister lives in Chapel .

Noting your surname I wonder if you can answer a query I have.? My GGrandmother was Hannah WHITWAM daughter of Henry WHITWAM and Sarah TIFFANY. This is as spelt on my Grandfather Joseph EDWARDS` birth certificate. However the marriage entry in Halifax register has WHITWORTH and Hannah signed with that name.? Was this a regular alternative name for WHITWAM or just a one off?? Joseph`s brother`s certificate has WHITWAIN but that is obviously just a mistranscription at the registry office.

Please see my previous reply

It reads

As in the case of the wills, you don't need to put all the details in

Search for the year 1875

The surname = WHITTEY
Forename = Ann
Select Female
District if Death = Bradford

That is all you need to enter, then search, one hit as I posted earlier

It sounds like you are trying to order using the name WHITLEY?

Or are adding information which is not needed

You need to use the name it is transcribed as in the GROs own indexes on their site, which is WHITTEY

You don't even need to add Ann as there is only one death registered in that year indexed as WHITTEY

I can assure you its there with the three options of digital, PDF or certificate

Thanks Nivard, did sort it all out and have ordered the will. I also have on my tree a family spelt WHITELY, so that was my confusion.
Still cant get the death certificate for Ann WHITLEY even though I have all the right details. I have had this happen before and wrote
to GRO to tell them but no reply.

The easiest way to order birth and death certificates prior to 1924 at least is to use the GRO's own search at
If you do the search for Ann Whitley died 1875 in Bradford it will fail
But change the option to "phonetically similar variations" for the surname you will find her
She is indexed by the GRO as WHITTEY (You can suggest a change to that )

Once you have found her there Click on the dot beside her name and you can order the digital certificate for ?3

Remember that the indexes here are totally independent of those on any other site
Most of the others are taken from one of the many microfiche versions of the old paper indexes
The digital version as in the GRO's new indexes were taken from new images of the original records submitted to them
