Re: Frank Herbert GIFFORD
Hi Linley Family Search has a Frank Herbert GIFFORD son of George William GIFFORD born 1837 in Willingham, Cambridgeshire and died 1880 in Brighton.? However...? A Frank?Herbert GIFFORD, 40,? was convicted in 1885 of theft in Woolwich, stealing tools from a printer and pawning them- he'd printed up address cards for himself - ex 9th Lancers, foreman at the Woolwich dockyards (which I think were the British naval dockyards.) He claimed sunstroke in India had led him to drink!? Then in 1886, living in Long Acre, Covent Garden, London - obtaining money by deception from the Charity Organisation. He said he was from Leeds, Yorkshire, claimed to be Sergeant Harry COX with a wife and five children, unemployed, starving... so they found him work and gave him money, then his wife died and he spent all his money on funeral expenses, then he turned up with a broken arm...? He'd got hold of Harry COX's papers by writing to the War Office as J GIFFORD saying he wanted to employ him but enlisted in the name of Frank Herbert GIFFORD but was constantly on the default list (presume that means he was constantly in trouble?)? Then in 1886 Frank Herbert GIFFORD of no fixed abode was convicted of stealing a parcel from a tram in York - he was 49 so that would give a birthdate of around 1837/39 (no mention of military career then)? Makes me wonder if he really was Frank Herbert?? Best of luck - that looks like a very complicated search! Jane? Chasing W(H)ELDRAKE/DRICK, WELDRAKE/DRICK - any variation, anywhere, anytime?
