Please enjoy God Bless America in Yiddish (Got Bentsh Amerike), a project conceived and co-produced by Lisa Fishman and Ben Liebert and performed by the cast of NYTF’s Fiddler in Yiddish in celebration of Independence Day - featuring the show's director, Academy and Tony Award-winning actor, Joel Grey, along with Steven Skybell, who starred as Tevye. “God Bless America” was originally written in 1918 for a musical revue by Irving Berlin, a Jewish immigrant born Israel Beilin, while Berlin was in the U.S. Army. Deciding the song didn’t fit the tone of the revue, the song was set aside. Twenty years later in 1938 with the rise of Adolf Hitler and fascism, Berlin revisited and revised the song and released it as a prayer for the country and a patriotic song of peace. “God Bless America” was introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938, sung by Kate Smith. Excellent Intermediate Yiddish class online 2
This is from our friend Ellen Muraskin who often comes to our Zoom on Fridays: +++++++++++++ Klas Protim My class will probably meet Monday mornings via Zoom at 9:30 am and start Jan. 15. I charge $80 for eight lessons because I'm not trying to make a living at it, and I am not a true professional Yiddish teacher. But I get good reviews and I don't let anyone fall asleep. We will be using Sheva Zucker's Yiddish Volume II, and we're up to lesson 14b, I think. So we're pretty far along. I give and return homework every week, like a book exercise or writing ten original sentences using words from the vocab. If you do it, you learn more. We also use songs, expressions, and videos from youtube. I think we have seven people in the class now. Zayt mir gezunt, zayt azoy gut un lozt mikh visn oyb ir vilt onteyl nemen (take part) inem kurs. ++++++++++++++ I recommend it! Nu? Lozt uns zen az bin ikh nisht aleyn in dos listserv! Shelley will share his struggle to survive and persevere before the war, during the war as a slave to the Hungarian army, and after the war when he met her mother. Friday Yiddish Schmooze, Zoom talk, this list
Yes, our Friday Yiddish Schmooze is on EVERY Friday at 2:00 p.m. at this link. It's low intermediate level. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81437372418?pwd=b0F1dFJuOXM5ek9Ra29BS043Q0dOQT09 And yes, Shelley, I am interested in your talk and I think others would be, though we need to know the timing. I suggest that you send the information with a link to the Zoom talk to this group here. There are currently 8 people on here: Rona Amichai Sherry Marlowe Shelley Greenspan Marnie Manning Mac Harris Karen Travis Mark Shifman Rebecca Pomerantz I'm pretty sure we are all intermediate Yiddish students from Trip to Yiddishland, though there's no reason not to expand it. How should we use this list? Who else should we reach out to? Of course we can stay very informal, but if people want to write something in Yiddish (transliterated or not), that might be good practice for us all... Other ideas? Perhaps someone is feeling motivated to write in Yiddish right now? Rebecca/Rifke On Sat, Dec 30, 2023, 3:20 PM Rochelle Greenspan via groups.io <Rochellegreenspan@...> wrote: Thanks Rebecca! It's been awhile since I joined our group on Fridays. Are you still meeting at 2pm? I will send you the link if so. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and peaceful 2024! Intermediate Yiddish class online, join our Yiddish listserv
I'm forwarding this note from Ellen Muraskin about her Yiddish class online: Mitler Yiddish Class? Sheva Zucker's Volume II, other details Tayere Fraynt: So here's the deal: If we get, say, seven truly interested folks from among my Yiddish lib-hober fraynt in NJ and MA, I can lead an "intermediate" Yiddish class that would start late Oct - Early November, run for eight sessions at a time, cost $80 to non-members of Adath Shalom, and take place Wednesday afternoon, say 2 or 3 or 4, or evening at 7:30. Some of you have already used this book, which runs around $40. I would also make use of other materials found on the web, of which there are many. We're still via zoom, and there's still heymarbet. Please let me know if you'd like to participate, and whether afternoon or evening works better. Meantime, there's a great Yiddish shmooze led by Asia Eizenkot, out of Los Angeles, I think, every Tuesday at two. Here's the link: https://zoom.us/j/6171310772 Not to be confused with the Yiddish open mike cafe out of London, which I sent a link about earlier today. Please let me know by, say, Friday this week. Zayt mir ale gezunt un shtark, Ellen ++++++++++++++ Also, I apologize that I've been neglecting this group that I started! Below is another chance to join. We could even practice our Yiddish in the email group -- it's an intermediate group for the most part. Rebecca Hello, You have been invited by Rebecca Pomerantz to join the 开云体育 group [email protected]. The following message was included by Rebecca Pomerantz: After the Worker's Circle week-long retreat "Trip to Yiddishland" ended in Aug 2023, we wanted a way to keep in touch easily, debrief, let each other know about Yiddish language and cultural events, etc. I'm sending this to as many participants from Trip to Yiddishland this year as possible. Please feel free to let others who were there know about this group. Besides staying in touch and posting about events, we could also communicate here about Covid cases after camp. Since 6 people went home after testing positive during the week, and I myself know 8 more cases so far after that, it seems important to check in with each other about that. We hope to be able to have input into the future Covid policy at Yiddishland. (For now, I'm not including Yiddishland staff or teachers/leaders here, though it would be easy to start a different wider group after we debrief.) To be able to write to and receive emails from this group, please follow the directions here, below, or write a blank email to [email protected] Subscribe: [email protected]
