Oregon Rail Supply ?

I didn't know that they made a brass casting for NKP switcher handrails ? Looks like the cab safety rails ?? Henry H. ??????

Re: More reference data !!

One of my all time favorite books - wonderful selection of color photos, and Don was a great writer as well.? A masterpiece. Also recommend some of Don's more generic 'Colorful American Railroads' books. A wider set of topics, but the guy knows how to find great photos. And you can find these books dirt cheap.

More reference data !!

Hi everyone , I picked up an almost new Don Ball book PRR of the 40s and 50s ! Lots of good pix in color , good narrative too !! More fun !!!? Thanks again Doug . lots o' projects this Winter !!? ?Henry

Re: More PRR ?

The Model Power locos , made by Roco with fist size servo motors , don't have proper numbers for the 1 to1 scale PRR . Irv Athearn's PAs DO !! 5750 is correct !? How about that ???!!! The Roco made Sharks and FAs run well and can pull the yard office out of town !! Henry H

PRR Diesel Photos

Henry, list,

I forgot to include the link to the Fallen Flags website that has PRR diesel photos.? Some are mis-identified, but should get you in the ballpark for numbering and lettering your Sharks and FAs when the time comes.

Re: More PRR ?

Henry, list,

Take what you like from what follows and enjoy your railroad. :)?

I never bought a Model Power Baldwin Sharknose diesel, and looking at photos of the model, I'm not sure if the model represents the earlier DR 4-4-1500 or the later RF16.? I'm leaning towards RF16, but I don't know with certainty, so I'll give you roster info from Douglas and Weiglin's PRR Diesel book for both the DR 4-4-1500s and the RF16s.??

PRR's Sharknose freight units were all Dark Green Locomotive Enamel (often called Brunswick Green).??

PRR's DR 4-4-1500 A units were 9568A-9593A and 9700-9707A.? B units were 9568B-9593B and 9700-9707B.??

PRR's RF16 units were 2000-2027A, 9594A-9599A, and 9708A-9745A.? The RF16 B units had even numbers only (unlike the DR 4-4-1500s). The RF16B units were 2000B-2026B, 9708B-9714B, 9728B-9744B, and 9594B-9598B.? ?

PRR's Sharknose freight units had the 5 stripe scheme (like most PRR passenger diesels) but with the Dulux Gold color.??

Looking at photos of the Model Power FAs, they look like FA1 units with the rear carbody louvers right next to the back wall of the carbody.? Real FA2 units had about a 2 foot distance between the end of the carbody louvers and the back wall of the cab.??

PRR's FA1 units were also Dark Green Locomotive Enamel.? PRR's FA1 A units were 9600A-9607A and the B units were 9600B-9607B.? PRR's FA1 units had PRR's single stripe Dulux Gold freight lettering.??

I am getting there. It is taking multiple design iterations to dial these in. When they get there, I will let you know.

Maybe even write an article or something...

Re: PRR Steam ????

Henry, list,

With regards to backup headlights on PRR tenders, at least some of PRR's smaller freight power had lights that look just like regular headlights.

See this shot of surviving H6sb 2846's tender.? In this engine's case, the backup headlight is mounted to the right (if you are facing the rear of the tender), with the ladder to the left.? If I was modeling this tender, I would use Cal Scale's 190-477 PRR headlight.

You might need to copy and paste the web address below to get it to work.??

In the case of surviving H10s 7688, her backup headlight is also mounted on the tender's right side.? My rendition of 7688 started out life as a Bowser H9s which I modified to get closer to a stoker fired H10s.? ??

Re: PRR Steam ????

Henry, list,

I had a chance to look at my Bowser catalog.? In the line drawing for Cary part 13-166, it looks like the light mounts on the tender top deck.??

Without a photo of the part, I can't be 100% sure since this is one of the Cary parts I don't have in my box of steam engine detail parts.?

Could any of you share a photo of Cary 13-166 that would help Henry out???

AHM Krauss-Maffei's

Nathan Rich

Background:

I may have gone slightly insane in the quest to repower a couple of these things. I acquired a 3D printer back in May or so, and I have just finished designing gearboxes to accept Athearn gears and axles. This is a work in progress, but I wanted to show the Group.

This is the rough draft, mainly to test gear mesh and clearances. The good ol' Athearn gears slip nicely onto 1/8 OD brass tube, which is what I will use for gear bearings. Outside bearings will be made of (probably) etched sheet brass. The same number of gears that an SD40 has will set me up, which will also probably donate its motor. Thank goodness for the swap meets.

Whaddaya'll think?

Re: PRR Steam ????

Henry, list,

I'm away from my Bowser catalog and the online version isn't very user-friendly.

Did you get Cary tender back-up light 13-166?? If not, what part number did you get???

I recall at least one of the backup light castings went into the tender's rear wall, but I can't recall which manufacturer made the part I'm thinking of.

The Selley doghouses are almost ''S'' gauge . Anyone got one I can buy ?? Cheaper rear mounting headlights ? Within the last month I've become a PRR steam modeler !!!!! ?PRR NYC Nickle Plate , B&O ??? ? Henry?

Model Die Casting PRR E6s 1067

Hello list,

I finished reassembling my Model Die Casting PRR E6s 4-4-2 numbered to represent PRR's first E6s, number 1067. ?The previous owner had done a nice job painting and assembling the boiler, but I needed to add clear acetate to represent window glass, paint some of the details, and paint the chassis I used under the model (Also an MDC PRR E6s chassis, just from another project). ?

The undated photo shows the boiler, cab, and tender as I received them on top of the unpainted chassis that I built. ?The September 2017 photo shows the engine with the tender top surfaces painted in an approximation of Freight Car Color (Polly Scale's Zinc Chromate primer) and the cab roof painted a darker color (Polly Scale's Special Oxide Red)....I'm not sure how I'll replace those colors once my supply runs out, but I've used some of the Vallejo acrylic paints for other projects.

While there are differences between the MDC chassis and the real E6s chassis, the model runs very nicely, and I can move on to rehabilitating my Bowser I1sa 2-10-0.

Re: Left Coast Steam: MDC 4-6-0 as SP T28

Doug , you might want to look at Texas RR Museum's SP 4-6-0 that was ''backdated'' ? Lines would be close ?? They ran lots of specials with it ??? Henry H. ? ?Fine work Mr . Doug .
