Yamaha qy70 + beatstep pro

It's amazing how it routes itself to the drum track... But how do I silence midi channels when I wanna play other synths... I get the drum triggering... This usually happens when I run it thru the Quadra or the remote sl as well.

How do I stop the midi Sigal from triggering when trying to play other synths?

this is a real shame about QY70/100: there's no midi channel on/off parameter. you have to enter a sysex message - thankfully pre-listed - in the Song mode, and 'run' the song to activate the message - and then you can go into Pattern mode and have your chosen midichannel outs turned off. ihaven't done this for a long time, and it's one of the reasons i'm more likely to use the RM1x these days (but still have a QY100).
i don't think there's any other way to do it? love to know if there is.

and... i was thinking it could be cool to do a Ctrlr panel for this and various other QY70/100 stuff ...

oh you could program it into the remoteSL ...

How? I don't understand sysex mindthough I've not gone down that rabbit hole yet?

go dig in the menus, it's quite easy really. i think it's under 'insert event'. you could then capture/copy the syx message and put it on the remoteSL. yamaha sysex is pretty good, no checksum for XG stuff. set up a bank of buttons to switch off the channels u want to send out to external.

?

Hi again,

Please disregard my last message. I realized I got quite a bit of it wrong…

I will repost when I have a chance to actually try it and make sure it works… It’s tough because I don’t have an external synthesizer hooked up right now.

QYEdit might have a better idea of how to enter the Sysex callin the QY to turn off the drum triggering… most of the SYSEX stuff I do revolves around the Novation Remote SL MKII.

well i had a go at doing it, - once - and it seemed to be that you can run the sysex message inserting it at the top of a Song, and then once it's done, it's set and you can go mess around in pattern mode. but you'll have to run that song each time you switch the QY on. so i dunno, maybe use the last Song #20 as a utility song, with just that sysex message inserted at the top of the tracks/channels you want to mute; btw the message is preset so you don't have to compose it, just browse the list.

this is all a bit more arduous than on the RM1x, where it's its own setting on one of the system pages.

So I'm happy to report that I've been able to bypass QY70 midi signal using an MPC1000 . Also I have control of the QY70 using the novation circuit I can sequence midi notes before I record them on the QY.

If anyone is interested in my set up and how it works
MPC1000 is the brains of my battle station

MPC1000 MIDI OUT A---->QY70
MPC1000 MIDI OUT B---->BEATSTEP PRO

BEATSTEP PRO----->QUADRA (NOVATION CIRCUIT, VOLCA KEYS, CRAVE)?

QUADRA---> CIRCUIT?

CIRCUIT---->ReMoteSL

ReMoteSL----> MPC1000 midi A IN

So now when I need control of the QY70 I set mpc1000 to midi Chan A. Now MPC has control of each drum on individual pads.?

But also the novation circuit has midi control so I sequence QY on circuit.. and also the ReMote gives key board access to QY as well as using the ReMote for manipulating? cc

When I switch to midi B I have control over the qy70 on beatstep through the novation circuit midi through... I just have to turn down the volume on the novation circuit.... I still have bugs I need to work out for example the drum on novation trigger the qy70 midi channel.. But only if I'm on midi A on MPC?

I'm actually surprised this is working, still finding bugs but I can find work around bugs or expand on this experiment. For now I'm glad I can cancel midi signals from qy as long as midi channel is not selected.... But still triggers the play button..

Another advantage is that I can record midi notes straight to the mpc before I record a phrase on the qy70.?

I hope anyone finds my rambling interesting or helpful.?

Now... How do you actually get good at using the QY70? that's my next challenge.?

Thanks for the help everyone?

Have you tried to find it in the pattern, job list?

I know there is a insert item for pattern jobs/tracks, whats in it i cant recall.

Also: IIRC patterns cant be accessed on Midi ch 17-24 ?

pattern tracks would be 17-24 since they are accompaniment tracks, running alongside the 16 songtracks. - consider the song mode, where you set up patterns to play along with your 16 song tracks.
in practice, at least in terms of assigned voices, they are running overlaid onto the sets assigned to them: 1-8/9-16. this is my interpretation anyway since i'm of the school that believes that a midi bus only has 16 channels. (someone should do a test: basic pattern, and then do something on each of the 16 song parts.) Eric will come up strong for 1-24 midi channels, because he delved into the sysex, and each has a different address there apparently.

go through all the Jobs in both Pattern and Song and you'll find a lot of correlation; i think the main difference is get phrase/put phrase which is a useful interchange between the two modes, where you can grab a bit of 'song track' and make a Phrase from it, in your Style, or conversely drop sections of patterns into a song. as for the Jobs Menu, it's split into sections; navigate those as headers when you can/have presence of mind to do so.

Haha,

No, QYEDIT IS right, there are 16 channels, but 24 tracks… at least based on the older midi spec. ?

Not sure what MIDI 2.0 specifies, but the QY’s are all based on MIDI 1.0
